Hi

I have popped over from the UK Comm boards.

My dh and I are off to NYC in March. We are still trying to decide on a hotel. We have seen Hotel Metro, Algonquin, Washing of Jefferson Hotel they seem to have some mixed reviews.

We only want a 3 star and are on a budget. We are looking to spend max $900 for 4 nights. I know we are asking alot, but we have seen Washington for $847 inc taxes, which I thought was good through Priceline.

Has anyone stayed at any of these hotels if not can you recommend any.

We want to be close to Times Square for entertainment etc....

I hope you can help me.

You might be able to find an excellent deal on www.hotwire.com. I have used it three times, each time getting the InterContinental Barclay (a four star hotel) for between $175 and $225 a night.

The only one I've stayed in recently is the Novotel in NYC. Reasonable rates, nice rooms and in the heart of everything.

The only one on your list I'm familiar with is the Algonquin. I haven't been inside, but I've been by it many times. It's in a really good neighborhood (safe and convenient). It must be quite busy, cause people are always coming and going. Personally, I'd never stay in a hotel on 9th ave or greater in the midtown area. During the day, you'd be ok, but I wouldn't venture out after dark. (JMHO)

Hi

Thanks for your help. My dh will have a look at that website tonight. I will avoid 9th Avenue.

Thanks again I cant wait.

I've stayed at the Algonquin, its lovely. Another one that is really nice that I stayed recently is the Mansfield, which is right down the street from the Algonquin. Both boutique hotels.

That said, when I go to NYC, I like to stay downtown near Ground Zero. I love the Embassy Suites at Battery Park. You get a HUGE room (by any standards, let alone NYC standards), a HUGE free breakfast (omelettes made to order, pancakes, waffles, fresh fruit, just about any breakfast food you can think of) and a free happy hour every night. I've also stayed at the Marriott in Battery Park (got a cheap rate from priceline the weekend before Thanksgiving). It is a little more hassle to get uptown, but the subway is right there. What I liked most about it is getting away from all the midtown craziness at the end of the day....and the marvelous views of the Hudson River.

We stayed at the Hilton Millenium right by Ground Zero last summer.

We had an upper level floor, corner room facing north. Beautiful view of the city each day/night!:) I think the corner rooms (windows on 2 sides) are a good bit bigger from what I could tell while there. We may have had a deluxe room, can't remember but it was a nice size for 4. Ground Zero was to our left. We used the Subway for many of our ventures and bought a 7 day pass for this. Very nice and a quieter area to stay in, which is important to me.

I just got a flyer in the mail with specials for NY Hilton's (there are many), in the $200-$250 range a night.. Sign up for emails online with some of these places and maybe you will get a deal.:)

Check out these: http://www.hilton.com/en/hi/hotels/specials.jhtml?ctyhocn=NYCMLHH
Check out the other Hiltons too if you want to stay uptown.

Here are some leads on good deals: http://hotels.travelzoo.com/new-york-hotels/

We stayed at the Affinia Dumont (for ~ $200 with tax a night, in the summer) three years ago and it was excellent, although a little distance away from Times Square. We know other folks who've been very pleased with some of the other Affinia hotels and Tripadvisor rates several of them very highly.

Others to think about:

Excelsior Hotel. Right across from the Museum of Natural History (did you see Night at the Museum), and consequently 1/2 block from Central Park, with tons of West Side restaurants around and two sets of subway lines to choose from--down Central Park West or Broadway.

Milburn Hotel. We had a one-room suite--queen bed in the bedroom, pull-out queen sofa in living room where our son slept, and a small kitchenette with refrigerator which was handy--a couple of great markets within a block, and just blocks away from Zabars and H&H bagels. Not fancy and a bit worn, but clean and 1/2 block from Broadway, again on the West Side.

Really consider the Upper West Side--this is where folks really live in town, the Park is right there (it's a pleasant walk through the Park to the Metropolitan Museum for example), and there are lots of good restaurants. And you're just a quick hop taxi or subway ride to Times Square if you wish. But if you want to be closer to Times Square:

Park Central Hotel. Very close to Carnegie Hall (you know how to get to Carnegie Hall, don't you? Practice, practice) and consequently the Carnegie Deli, and just blocks from Time Square, Rock Center, and Central Park South.
