How long would it take to get from mid-town Manhattan to the Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford? What would be the transportation options and an approximate cost?

Thanks in advance for any help my DIS friends can give!

okay, never actually driven it, but according to Mapquest, it should take about 20 minutes. I assume that this doesnt include the traffic that you are bound to hit ;) keep that in mind and good luck!!

20 minutes. yeah, right. at midnight maybe. at rush hour the backup at the Lincoln Tunnel can run 45 minutes.

the only other option I can tell yu is to take a bus from Port Authority. the arena isn't near any train transportation that I know of.

Here's a link with info. If you click on the Continental Arena again, it will take you to the main page which also has a link to area hotel info.

Getting There

Thanks, ya'll.

I'm assuming I could also take a cab. Does anyone have an estimate of what that would cost?

you assume you can find a cabbie willing to leave the city. they don't have to do that, you know. many of them even refuse to go to the outer boroughs, let alone New Jersey.

fare information

A cab will likely cost you a pretty penny. We took a cab from LaGuardia to our apartment in NJ (15-20 minute ride) and the cabbie charged us double the fare on the meter. The meter fare was around $45, so it ended up costing us nearly $100. Not a good way to end our vacation :(

You might do better off if you can get to Newark airport and take a bus from there into the city. Or like crazyforme5kids said, you might be able to find a car service in the area of the arena (E. Rutherford) and get them to agree upon a set rate instead of chancing it with a taxi.

There is also The Port Imperial ferry service, which you can take from NYC. It is near the Intrepid, can't remember the exact address. It goes across to NJ. I don't know what the cab situation is on the NJ side though.

If you're going to a sporting event, and plan on returning into NYC after, I'd arrange for a car. Any hotel concierge in NYC can help with this. If you're meeting someone, then you can take a cab, which would really be your only option. It will be difficult to find a cab for return transportation to NYC, hence why I recommend getting a car. There probably is a bus which leave from Port Authority, but I don't know the schedule or prices. The cab will be VERY expensive, since they will charge double fare if you can find one to leave NYC. Depending on time of day, it can take as little as 25 minutes or as long as all day. Basically if you're trying to get there during normal rush hours 6-9 AM or 4-8PM, you're looking at a minimum of an hour(most likely more) proabably more if you're on the East Side, trying to get crosstown can be a nightmare!!

Edited to add: The ferry the above poster talks about, drops off in Weehawken, and is no where near the Arena and public transportation is VERY sparce there as well as cabs.

bsnyder,
My husband works in NYC and has to go to meetings on occasion to the arena, and said the bus is a pain in the neck. He usually rents a car and drives over. The ferry is a nice option, I've done it many times and it only takes about 15 minutes to get to the arena, but I've always had someone pick me up on the other side. Hopefully we have all helped you.

Thank you for all the information, it helps a lot!

It sounds like my best option would be to check with the concierge at the hotel. I'm going to NYC on Wednesday, for a meeting, and my son is joining me on Friday, so that he can take a look at NYU. He almost flipped out when the TB Lightning won in the first playoff round, so I bought tickets to Saturday night's round 2 game in New Jersey.

you might hit traffic saturday night, so make sure that whichever way you go you leave plenty of time to get there.

enjoy.

Thanks for the heads up, BR! I'll definitely be sure to allow plenty of time to get there!

If your feeling adventurous, take the PATH across to Journal Square, then take a cab to Meadowlands. Otherwise, I would definitely take car service. If your not used to driving in the city, it can be very nerve-racking! I only work 1 mile from the arena, and the line to get into the parking lot at times can be 20 minutes.
