The week after NY the parks are really quiet from the first Monday eg. this year, Monday is the 3rd of January so we anticipate quiet in the parks here on in.
It can be very cold or warm; in other words totally unpredictable weatherwise although there will be less rain. 2 years ago we had 2 short showers in the whole first 2 weeks of January we were there. You should still be able to catch some of the Christmas decorations in the resort hotels and I know that these are normally at cheapest price this time of year.
PS in restaurants is not normally necessary and you can pretty much walk in anywhere, with a few exceptions of course (CRT). I think it is a great time to go as you can get about without big crowds in your way and get on all the rides you want with hardly any wait.
I will say that park hours are shorter, more rehabs are likely to be taking place and it can be downright chilly in the evening. Other than that, absolutely go for it! We'll be there jan 1st to 14th 2005 and can't wait.
Maybe my trip report when I get back will give you an idea (or other trip reports for this time of year)
Much pixie dust,

fizz13,

Maybe I will chose that time .... Just me and DD (11), mom and daughter time ! We'll have a blast no matter when I chose ! She has school off till Jan 6th, that is why I am tossing up that time... thinking ..... but I can take her out and can go anytime on my end ... not sure what to do...

Thanks for the info ! Maybe I will be there then too !!!

Last year New Years Eve and New Years Day were the busiest I've ever seen WDW, and I've seen some busy days there. Thursday was New years day, and the crowds didn't really settle down until the Monday after.

I don't mean to bring you down or anything, just be mentally prepared for chaos!!!!

New Years Eve and New Years Day will be the first or second busiest day of the year and most of the parks will be closed by 10am. You may or may not be able to get back into the parks later in the day depending on where you are staying and if you are trying to get back into the same park.

We will be there too, but plan on watching people and taking advantage of the very long day. We will do as many things that don't have lines since they will be 3 hours long for the popular attractions.

fDecker,

What do you mean closed at 10am ??? MK is open till 1am on New Years eve and 10pm on the 21st.

I was planning on somehting like Dec 29 till Jan 6th ... thinking only part of that time will be crowed .....

Does the park get so crowded that they turn people away ?? Is that what you mean ???

PG

Yes, the parks will fill to capacity, especially on NY eve and they will turn people away. If you are staying on site you should be able to get in a park, it just may not be the one you want.

What happens if you are staying at POP and go to one park and leave, get your hand stamped, does that guarantee that you can get back in to the same park? I would like to take the kids back to the room to rest since it will be a long day. Any help?

I would suggest finding 2 or 3 CM's and asking them what your chances are based on their experience. I'm just guessing here, but think that lots of people will want to try what you are and that the middle of the day will be the least crowded. Everyone will then want to come back to the park for NYE festivities. If you caught it when people were leaving themselves and you were coming back, you might be able to get in.

What are some alternative things to do on NY Eve for those who do not want to go to a crowded park?

Like for Halloween, the Downtown Disney was fun and FREE !!!

Any ideas ????

Thanks
PG

We are going Jan 1-5 this year, but not planning on going to any park the day we arrive. Plan to visit dowtown Disney on the the 1st, just do some shopping and people watching the first day. Hoping the crowds will die down some starting on the 2nd. Our boys also are out of school until the 6th, and since prices go down on the 1st, this is why we arrived at these dates. Will bring clothes for all temperature extremes, so the weather should pose no problems for us, will still be much better than the weather in Indiana at that time.

Hey, I have another green ribbon/Disney head to look for-I'll also be at DTD on January 1. This is my fourth time going to WDW right after the first, and I hope it's like the other times when crowds die down dramatically right after the first. We're planning to see Osborne Lights on January 2, that will probably be our first visit to the parks. I'm really counting on the crowds dropping by then.

HI Claire - here's something I didn't know! I thought on-site guests could always get in to any park.

The thing is, if it was that full, would you even want to go in there??:D

I am booked! Dec 29 till Jan 7 th ! Yikes, last minute AND I can't believe it is coming so fast!

Now ... what to do on NY Eve ??? I am not too worried about it, because just being in Disney will be fun !

Tossing up ideas ...

Any more ideas from anyone ??????

We are booked at AS Sports for the 31st to the 2nd and have an offsite booked for the 30th in case I have that day off too.

We had looked at PI for NYE but since it is 21 & over only, we can't take DD (17) in. So we plan on being in one of the parks. I was even thinking about being at MGM to see the Osbourne lights and bring in the NY there.

DD said if DH & I wanted to go to PI that was fine, but I told her that DH had already decided against it, since we want to be together for NYE.

we will be arriving on Jan. 2 and are also planning on seeing the Osborne family lights. Hope it won't be too crowded.

We'll be there from the 1st-9th. I hope that most of the crowds are gone by Monday or Tuesday. We were there last year from the 1st-5th, the weather was beautiful and warm and I don't remember the crowds being so bad. I think right after Christmas is a GREAT time to go! :sunny:

I'm usually a summertime WDW goer... So this is going to be new to me...

December 30 to January 4. I wanted to go later but the rest of my group has to back by the 5th of Jan...

I am hoping that things are not insane but I'm not expecting small crowds... I am thinking 4th of July kind of crowds... Only difference, it won't be 95 degrees...
