I am new to this idea. In fact, I just started thinking about it a week or two ago. I am a poor college kid who loves Disney (maybe obesessed is a better word). I have been reading up on DVC, but still do not understand it fully. I have to buy a room and then I get points for the year? I don't understand the points. Is this a good deal for me? How do I know which place to buy? What if I want to go to Disney more than once a year? Does DVC really save money? Any help would be awesome. And if these questions have already been answered please point me in the right direction because right now I am so lost. Thanks! :goodvibes

If I were you, I'd rent points when I wanted to go to Disney. When you are not a poor college student, you should look into buying DVC. I don't think you can afford it now. In addition to financing your purchase, you will also have to pay monthly dues. The idea is good, but I would just rent points for a few years.

Too many questions to answer all at once.

With DVC you buy points(say 150) that you receive each year for the next 36 years...or so. With those points you can then make reservations at one of the 7 DVC resorts(5 at WDW). The cost per night differs depending upon type of room, resort, day of the week and time of the year. A studio can cost as little as 9 points per night, while a 3 bedroom could cost 10 times as much..for one night. So the 150 points could get you two weeks at WDW(unlikely) or as little as 2 nights...it all depends upon how you manage your points.

Once you buy the points you will receive the same amount (say 150) each year until the contract expires (2042 or 2052). There is no additional cost to purchase the points; they are yours forever. What you will have is an annual maintenance fee of around $4 per point which you have to pay yearly.

Currently the cost to buy into DVC is around $95/point so a 150 point contract would cost you $14,250...but that is a one time charge.

Hope this gives you a beginning.

renting does sound like a better option. i thought it might be for us as well for a few years. on our recent visit to saratoga i decided that we just could not wait any longer.

I concur... I believe the average stats for Time share owners (I can't remember but the Chicago Tribune just reprinted an Orlando Sentinel report on the growing popularity... a lot on Disney in there) are usually married and household income of 75K per year. Remember, you are talking a 150 point minimum investment (unless you buy resale, but from what I have heard the smaller contracts are usually getting ROFRed by Disney, except if the person already owns DVC and even then it is usually a crap shoot) at $103 per point PLUS yearly maintenance which I believe is about $5 per point per year for Saratoga Springs. SO you are talking $15,450 minus incentives and then the maintenance fees.

Renting points will let you know if DVC is for you so that in a few years when you are a hopefully decently off worker bee, you can purchase one if so inclined. Plus hopefully the Poly will be a DVC by then... YEAH!!!

I believe it is actually $101 or 103 for Saratoga now... Although subject to availabilty the older properties are $95 per point.

I understand completely.

I brought when in college (okay I didn't start college until my 40's)....

I was also working full time and going to college. It didn't leave alot of down time - but hey every quarter break I would treat myself with a trip to disney....

I have enough points to do a 2-bedroom - but hey I am still cheap - so I do the studio

you can stay at okw for 8 points a night - so 40 Sun-thurs. fri/sat are a ton of points (20 points per night) value (adventure) season.

I like to do more often - so I go 4 times a year (some time more) but only stay around 5 days. that is around 40,40,50,55 = 185 points for all my trips...
