Different to the US? I'm confused now...
There are general restrictions that apply to all flights from the UK, but there are also some extra restrictions/searches specific to flights leaving the UK for the US. :)

This is what I thought. Does anyone know where to find them and what they are?

This are from the BAA site:

http://www.baa.co.uk/assets/B2CPortal/Static Files/hand_baggage31Aug.pdf

It goes on to say the following re USA flights, although I think you have posted this yourself on the other thread:

"Before security: All shops and catering outlets are open to all passengers, but any liquids and gels purchased must be packed into your luggage for check-in. Any other purchases must fit into your hand luggage.

Once through security: All shops and catering outlets are open to all passengers. If you are travelling to any destination except the USA then you can take all items purchased in the departures lounge into the aircraft cabin.

"If you are travelling to the USA: Extra restrictions are in place. Passengers will be subjected to secondary security searches at the gate. No toiletries or cosmetics purchased in the departure lounge will be allowed into the aircraft cabin and any drinks or liquid items must be consumed before boarding. Food, however, is allowed. Passengers boarding flights to the USA and items they are carrying, including those acquired after the central screening point, will be subjected to secondary search at the gate and any liquids discovered will be removed."

Thankyou, you are right, I found this shortly after I asked the question (I think - was a bit confused yesterday  )

Hi,

What I'm confused about is this, I've heard people going to florida are taking the bag sizes that they have too the smaller size, but coming home bringing a bigger bag, normal hand luggage size before this all happened, were travelling with virgin, I thought you'd have to use the same size coming back as it's on the virgin website saying the size allowed.

Does that sound right to you, I don't know anyone who's recently come home, to see if they saw this.

Thank you,

Love Wendy xxx :bride:

received an email from BA this morning with an 'update' on what is and isn't allowed.

(sorry that's a bit lengthy) seems bizarre really that you can't take any cosmetics or liquid bought in duty free on board but food stuffs are ok, and are all the cosmetic products bought at the trolley on board really checked for security? I think not. I have visions of security staff spending hours spraying perfume at each other and doing each others make up to check that the estee lauder sold on board is 'real'

That is correct - the current hand luggage size restrictions are ex-UK ONLY (so when you fly from London to Orlando/Miami/where-ever). They are BAA (British) restrictions.

When you fly ex-US (i.e Orlando to London) you can have a NORMAL sized carry on (within your airline's NORMAL size and weight restrictions).

Obviously if you are connecting through London (i.e. Orlando to London to Glasgow) then you need to have the smaller hand luggage (which fits the BAA restrictions), because effectively you are flying ex-LON for your final flight....

American Airlines update !!!

All other carry-on items must be checked at the point of origin. Passengers arriving in the U.K. with oversize or excess carry-on bags must clear customs and immigration, check their baggage at the connecting carrier's ticket counter and go through security.

Passengers may take through the airport security checkpoint the following items (nothing may be carried in pockets):

Pocket size wallets and pocket size purses plus contents (for example money, credit cards, identity cards, etc (not handbags, unless it is the one carry-on meeting the dimensions)
Travel documents essential for the journey (for example, passports and travel tickets)
Prescription medicines and medical items may be carried provided that the total amount to be carried in the cabin is less than 50ml (includes medicines in liquid, cream or gel form) sufficient and essential for the flight (e.g., diabetic kit), except in liquid form unless verified as authentic. Essential medicines in tablet form or powder form (up to 50g) can be carried in the cabin without being subject to a verification procedure.
Spectacles and sunglasses, without cases
Contact lens holders, without bottles of solution
For those traveling with an infant: baby food (in small containers), milk (the contents of each bottle must be tasted by the accompanying passenger) and sanitary items sufficient and essential for the flight (nappies, wipes, creams and nappy disposal bags)
Female sanitary items sufficient and essential for the flight, if unboxed (eg tampons, pads, towels and wipes)
Tissues (unboxed) and/or handkerchiefs
Keys (but no electrical key fobs)
Non-liquid items from duty free areas (no gels, pastes, lotions, liquid/solid mixtures or pressurized containers allowed)
Electronic equipment including, laptops, mobile phones, digital cameras and MP3 players (such as i-Pods). Laptops must be removed from the bag for x-ray.
Customers should also be advised that they will be subject to additional security searches and should allow plenty of time to pass through airport security.

American Airlines apologises for the inconvenience caused by these measures and thanks you for your cooperation and understanding.
