Anybody found anywhere to get the right size bags that meet the requirment of the new restrictions ?

Surely somebody is going to cash in on this ? :-)

Hi I checked the link for that bag is it a reasonable size? compared to a regular sized sports bag which is what we used to take with us?

I was going to buy one of those but it is quite a bit smaller than it has to be. I did buy a suitcase from that range though.

Yes, it is not a big as it could be. Trouble is, we found that if the length and depth of a particular bag fell closer to the maxium allowed, the width was well over the limit. If you want something bigger I guess you need to look at something designed to take a laptop for example - but then the price can get silly.

For £9.50 we felt this would take the camera, a book, magazine and for my DW a small handbag inside.

Yes, a reasonable size, but smaller than a sports bag. As mentioned above I suspect that most sports bags are now deemed to be too wide.

It doesnt matter if the bag is a little bigger if its pretty empty..and will squish into the bag thingy.

I have to say I found it quite liberating taking less on board than usual.

I just too my change of clothes (since my son threw up completely over me last trip!) my mints, a hairbrush a magazine and my ipod! It was really lovely!

Yes, I share that view. The recent plastic bag and wallet was however very severe, but of course necessary.

From reading other threads this restriction mostly affects those with young children and babies when you have no option but to take the necessary with you.

I bought one of those bags from M&S, i only put camera and camcorder plus sunglasses and passports etc in the bag so it won't be full.

You're not wrong there!! First time flying with our 23 month and am severely panicking. Have to keep stopping myself and saying "it's only 9 hours, he will survive" ;). Biggest worry is him being in pain though (current severe teething of back molars and air pressure problems) and not being able to give him anything for it. Another major worry is the lack of hand luggage space to carry entertainment/food for him. Main reason for this is to try and keep him from causing a major disturbance to other passengers/flight crew, but I am starting to think who cares now. I guess there will be other famillies in the same boat (or plane :lmao: ) as me, and passengers without kids will just have to get use to it. There is nothing we can do about it and only so much you can do to keep a toddler still and quite for 9 hours . Hopefully most people will be understanding. I have to think like that otherwise I will probably have a breakdown :lmao:

Just checked out the above link. Looks a really nice bag, probably one I would buy anyway - thanks OP.

Not seeing this bag in flesh I cant tell how big it is. Would you say that is all the bag can hold? If you wanted to add more would you have to cram it in? Or, does it seem quite roomy and could hold a lot more? Are the sides hard, so if it is filled to the brim (as mine would be) it wouldn't bulge out?

One side of the bag is firmer/harder than the other. The firmer side has a net pocket with a zip on the inside for documents etc.

I guess it is only half the cubic capacity of a sports bag, if that. I would go to a decent sized M&S and see one for real. Firstly, do what I did, and ring the store to see if they have any in stock to avoid a wasted trip.

It was recommended by Which Magazine before the new size restrictions came into force, and was chosen as a good buy by either the Sunday Mail or Express afterwards.

Thanks for this. Have just rang my mother who is going to a large size M&S this afternoon anyway, to look for me just in case it's there. If not I will ring around.

One other question: I appear to have started a debate on another thread regarding hand luggage bags. Am I right that the bags have to be in those dimensions and therefore will end up laptop/above mentioned M&S bag shape?Someone else said it could be any shape as long as it fitted in the frame they test it with, which I understand, but it seems to me to buy this sort of shape would mean you are utilizing the dimensions and getting the maximum amount of space (which I need). Do I make sense or am I confused with this?

Well, I've worked on the basis that it has to be a fixed shape. They appear to have a box at the airport into which your bag has to fit, thus you could indeed argue that any bag of any size that was flimsy and not full but fits into that box is suitable. Then you go any buy a ghetto blaster in the Dixons duty free shop and take it on the plane in the bag, but well oversize!

I'm going along with what you might call the spirit of the rule and am taking on bags that even if empty can stand upright whilst somebody puts a tape measure around each side. I think that's fair in the circumstances and helps the security people.

I'm sure you're allowed to take up to 50Ml of medicine (e.g. calpol) for kids though... Have a look at the BAA website...

Does that count for the US? If so I will be most happy :goodvibes I always got the impression rules were still slightly differrent to the US still. I spoke to my airline and they said to the US, all their flights still had no food to be taken on board of any description and no juice for children. When I quoted the BAA website, she told me it was up to me who I believe!! She wasn't much help, but to be fair I have searched through the BAA website and there is a section that gives the full details, but goes on to say it is different for flights to the US. Rather then giving further details, they said we should ring our airline company  .

Sorry - totaly off topic.

Don't get me started on the subject of the new hand-luggage restrictions - they are simply ridiculous. They have nothing to do with new safety restrictions and everything to do with airlines finding a way to prevent passengers taking too much on board in terms of the huge roll-on bags which some people think are 'hand luggage' (and charging extra for people with too many bags in the hold - good move, easyJet).

I have been here, there and everywhere recently, with my trusty blue Super Bowl shoulder bag (contents usually: laptop, small digital camera, diary, the latest Sports Illustrated magazine, business cards, etc; i.e. not large), which has always been fine with every airline either transatlantic or internally in the US. It was fine when I flew back to the UK last week (on Thomson, from Sanford) and it was fine when I flew from Orlando to Detroit on Sunday night. It was NOT fine when I checked in for the Virgin flight to Orlando on Sunday, though. I'd actually packed a jar of Nescafe Gold Blend decaf coffee (can't get it over here!) and a small box of Roses for the DW, and it was now 2 inches too wide for the 'new BAA restrictions.' I told the check-in clerk that it had been deemed OK for the flight back to the UK from the US but she just insisted it was the new rules 'from the US.'

So I checked with a TSA agent at Orlando airport and he told me he had never heard anything like it. They have NO size restrictions at all (apart from the obvious one about sensible size for hand luggage), and the only guidelines to follow are the ones regarding no liquids, gels, lipsticks, etc, in hand baggage.

So, once again, it is BAA just trying to make life more miserable for people having to travel through their miserable airports, which are over-crowded, under-staffed and falling apart (witness Gatwick on Sunday - I passed 11 moving walkways from the entrance to departure gate 21 - only TWO were working  ).

So there :furious:

Vent over :teeth:

Different to the US? I'm confused now...

It may be that the manufacturers don't believe the current size restrictions will stay as they are. I certainly hope they don't because they don't make much sense, as Simon said!
