New Security Measures At The Parks

Of course those intent on causing harm may find a way...but does that mean we should do nothing?
It means that regardless of what theater security is implemented, it won't matter. There are so many ways someone could cause mass chaos at Disney and it is all before having to go through any security of any kind.

Just to clarify:

MagicBands have two versions of RFID in them. Passive and Active. The passive is the chip that needs almost direct touching to scanners for tickets, FP+, charging, dining plan, room key, gate operation. The active is the chip that needs to be in close proximity so that is where the ride photos come into play. This chip is only in MB because it needs a battery. This is the chip Disney will use more in the future for interactive experiences, knowing approximately where you are for working crowd flows etc. Complicated usage but will pay off in long run. Predict in future guests wearing these will receive more spontaneous offers of FP+, discounts at restaurants needing to be filled etc. Offering bonuses to those who wear may increase the usage of the MB by offsite guests.

Hard Tickets have only the Passive RFID chip in them. So they can not pick up where you are, so you can't get ride photos unless you tap. These will not help Disney in the "tracking" process. This will not help the guest in receiving any special offers.
Sorry, I thought the above was common knowledge, which is why I didn't explain.

It prevents an argument inside the park becoming a gun fight.

I have to say, I thoroughly support the prevention of gun fights in theme parks! Considering how hot, tired, cranky (and sometimes drunk) most Disney guests are, I'm awfully glad they aren't also armed. :)

One thing reading this thread has really driven home to me, is the fact that - stereotypes aside - "hawks" are as likely as anyone else to be naive and idealistic, and that "doves" can be hard nosed, well-informed and realistic. (Not taking sides or pointing fingers at anyone in particular!)

My kids could probably out run an evil man with a non evil knife (they are runners) but the same evil man with a non evil gun - a different story.

And with that thought I will leave to your gun culture- no point discussing any further- If you don't like Disney's changes don't go- simple

I don't have a "gun culture". I'm just pointing out that those who can legally possess a firearm are one major thing to stop those with evil intent. As some Sheriffs are pointing out now, they encourage those who can lawfully possess a firearm to use it until their Deputies can make it to the scene.

"Off duty baltimore cop just killed a man with a toy gun" (fox news today)- so they cannot always tell the difference. Kids never end up carrying the things they buy about all day - at some point mum or dad will end up holding them. No guns makes it easier to manage the parks- no brainer really. Its not like there is not enough stuff at disney to entertain the little darlings and if they are not for sale in any shops then the kids won't ask for them anyway. If they still do a firm no should do the trick!

I can tell you from experience..... I have seen a 'toy gun' that looked exactly like a 1911 pistol used in a bank robbery that I didn't know was plastic until I had it in my hand. The person painted over the orange tip to disguise it.

I can't imagine anyone with half a brain not figuring that one out.

Get real, there is an active shooter and what? Someone is standing around with musket aiming it? Are you serious? I'm not even kidding, what sort of bizzaro situation are you envisioning where a terrorist is shooting people with a real gun and there is someone holding up a toy and hanging out next to them?

What sort of idiots do you imagine are going to be responding and see that and think, "hey lets shoot the 5 year old?" Again, setting aside how absurd it would be to have the individual hanging out there "aiming" it.

Have you even seen these "replicas" you speak of?

As to the "a week ago you could have". You say that as if it couldn't have happened today, it could have. Even if they put everyone through the detectors.

Anyway, fantasy land is an area in MK, it's not a real place and these fantasies some people are having about toy pop guns or buzz blasters or bubble guns, let alone what would actually happen in an active murderer scenario are so far fetched, they wouldn't even make a B list movie.

These things would be like me telling NASA how to build the next international space station... I shouldn't be telling them anything because I'm clueless about, aside from watching a few movies. No different when it comes to the current security situation and seeing some of the replies in this thread, clueless people having to invent impossible scenarios to justify how something that does nothing to improve safety, somehow makes them feel safer.

Why do you think Disney made the decision to ban toy guns??

If it was your job to stop a person with a gun, it might be a wee bit easier if a bunch of people aren't carrying fake guns. Sad to say the people capable of carrying out attacks use children.

it is only a matter of time before all guests have to go through metal detectors. just like most sporting venues these days. no big deal IMO. just allow more time like you do getting into concerts and sporting venues. and leave your guns at home....sadly, has to be said....

Well, if you're not comfy here in Americer with our "gun culture," then perhaps you'd be more comfortable in Disneyland Paris... and their no-gun culture.

This is America, not "Americer." Calm down and maybe you'll be able to spell correctly and come up with a better argument. As you can tell from this endless thread, American opinions are split on gun-control issues, so you have no business telling someone to move to France just because they don't agree with you. Free speech is guaranteed in America's first amendment, remember? It's that amendment they wrote right before the second amendment, with which you seem to be more familiar.

If you're from the UK, we live in "Americer."

Calm down and maybe you'll hear the audio puns...

i actually would like all guests to go through metal detectors. i hope they transition to this for all guests soon. i mean, prior to 9-11, they did not seven search bags....times change, so does disney. no issue from me.

Talk about far fetched scenario's, I'll try and find a link to a manufacturer annual report that specializes in radiation and biological warfare sensors. They list Disney along with other governments as main customers. I feel very safe vacationing in Disney world ... They do a great job.

Puns are an acquired taste.

America or Americer, I'm still missing the pun...?

I thought puns were wordplay, stuff like this, where you change the meaning of the word: Why does Ariel wear seashells? Because B-shells are too small and D-shells are too big. Or where you substitute one word for another that sounds almost the same, but is related in a different way: Simba's walking too slow. Tell him to Mufasa!

Yeah... I'm punny! ;)

Sorry, I thought the above was common knowledge, which is why I didn't explain.

I included you because you were part of the sub-conversation. Apparently :confused3many who talk about the MBs on here still don't understand how they work.

Which Sheriffs, and where?

I'm reminded of this woman: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/12/12/u...ers-vows-to-never-help-anyone-again.html?_r=1 ;)

I'm very happy she's vowed "never to help anyone again", considering she doesn't seem to understand that she wasn't actually helping anyone in the first place.
I've found 3 sheriffs encouraging people to carry - the crazy guy in Arizona, a guy in upstate ny and someone in montana. Considering there are thousands of sheriffs in the country I don't think 3 are really significant
