New Rumors

Does anyone know how much pressure is increasing on VWL, BCV and OKW for ressies at 7 months (or less) out? SSR also must affect it but at least going to SSR is not a bad default location. It has to be getting pretty tough already and things like this can only make it worse-or will enough start going to these other locations that it wont be a big deal? In other words there is no way we would buy at Colorado but we would for sure go there on points once in a while. Would a lot buy Colorado but usually go to WDW? Or would most buy Colorado and rarely go to WDW? Just wondering after reading the changing the 7 months out comments.

My guess is that DVC would have some data. They would build a resort they could probably fill 80% with the folks currently using their points in Colorado. Not all those folks would go to the DVC resort - some would still prefer whereever they currently trade to (but those options aren't static and I'd think there would be fewer of them with a DVC resort near the slopes). That would mean there would be almost no additional pressure from this offsite option - as more people would want to get in than out.

They would need to make sure it had a summer activitiy - water park, golf, nearby horsebackriding. Maybe DisneyQuest - which would pull from the neighboring resorts. Great kids activities, of course.

I don't think I would want to trade out of DVC to go to CO. Too much hassle. I'll just pay for the resort as I have been doing for the past 20 years. But I would use points out there if I could stay within the DVC system. (In other words, I think that the number of current members who trade to CO now is LOWER than the number that would use a DVC resort in CO.)

I don't think Disney will ever fill a CO resort 80% with current members. It's too far away. I don't think they could sell all the points through their WDW kiosks. They will need to market outside WDW AT the resort town itself. To actual SKIERS and HIKERS. Many of those people have never been to WDW but may try it once they're DVC members. Or may not.

I think the traffic FROM CO members to WDW will be about the same as traffic FROM WDW members to CO. IMHO. I'm sure you realize that there are LOTS of people who don't care that much about WDW, many of them outdoor enthusiasts. (To them Disney World is the antithesis of what they enjoy in life. Freedom versus lots of rules. Wide open spaces versus endless queues filled with people.)

There are 80 or 90,000 DVC member families. Build a 200 unit resort and you'd only need 10% of the members to want to go to Colorado each year for a week to get to 80% capacity for reservations outside home resort. For anyone not on the East Coast (where many, but not the majority, of DVC members are) Colorado is no farther than Orlando. This excludes the people who would buy in for the purpose of having a Colorado resort. I might go to Colorado once every ten years.

I think the traffic both ways will be as close to a wash as DVC can plan it, but I wouldn't worry about a Colorado DVC stressing the system.. And I think they have decent data based on how many of us are using our points in Colorado to plan it well.

As for far away...that depends on where you are. Colorado is closer for us in the Midwest (16 hour drive as opposed to 24 hours from the Twin Cities). A wash for much of South Central (Texas, Arkansas). Closer from the West Coast. Really, its the East Coaster this won't appeal much to - with decent skiing in Vermont (or Southerners, who don't tend to be skiiers). I know a lot of DVCers are from the East Coast, but I don't think its that many.

But I don't think a Colorado DVC will appeal to outdoor enthusists who don't like WDW. Its going to appeal to people who want more variety in their vacations. Ski every other year, Disney in the opposite years - and the current DVC membership can support the "demand" these people create with equal demand for Colorado. For hardcore skiing families, there are cheaper options. For hardcore outdoorsy families - they don't stay in condos.

I like the idea of a Colorado resort for one main reason: it would increase the variety of the DVC. I'm still of the opinion that, as much as a typical DVC owner absolutely lurves WDW , after a few decades of ownership, non-WDW options - particulary DVC Resorts - will start to look more and more appealing.

We have already envisioned stays at SSR where our WDW time is limited; we'd welcome a Colorado resort for much the same reason.

IMHO - YMMV.

and where we can go swimming......

also close to Chicago ;)

Oh well....

My guess is Texas.

I think DVC resorts in other areas are fantastic!!! I am assuming of course that the points are similar as to the existing points (meaning number of points per night). I trade into the Grand Californian for one night per year, but it is not the same as having a two bedroon at BWV with a full kitchen. Colorado would be nice, and I would go to a DVC resort there, but have never been before, nor do I plan on it, but I would for DVC (I would expect nice accomodations, so I would go). What really has me excited is even the thought of Hawaii!!!!! For folks on the west coast, this is the place to go, and many here go often. What would be really interesting is the points and the pricing. I could easily see that if point pricing was the same as it is at WDW DVC properties, then the points per night would probably be pretty big. Or, DVC could charge more for points and for existing members, maybe give some point credit or something. The reason I say this is that timeshares in Hawaii are very pricey. A colleague of mine just bought at the Maui Marriott property, two weeks in a 1 Bdr, ocean front, and she paid $75,000 (and they don't even have a full kitchen). Much more expensive than DVC. My New Year's wish is still for Hawaii as we love going there and a good quality DVC resort would be awesome!!!!

Thanks for sharing, always love to hear some rumors!

So let's talk Cruise Line. :cool1: Do you think they'll have more DVC member cruises? The last sold out in a few hours.

I was talking to a guide on our last cruise. He mentioned DVC is starting to have a lot of influence with 90,000 members. There are so many DVC folks cruising, he wouldn't be surprised if the exchange rate for cruising declined.

I would be interested in a DVC cruise ship of sorts. The State of Florida made sweeping changes last summer in its timeshare laws to allow cruise ships to be considered as timeshares. Politicians don't just make changes to laws for no reason. Other private parties usually write the laws and have them sponsored by a senator or representative. The law was well written and "sailed" easily through the approval process. I wonder who authored the new law and why? Disney????
