New policy for reservations based on check IN date

Since it's been discussed in this thread, the II audit for Dec 2007 listed 123,391 DVC members.

Well, the mods closed the polls I put up (though I don't REALLY understand why, since...while related, they weren't discussing the policy much AND it's not like we can post polls HERE?? But...whatever) but I think the sample size was enough to get a good feel for the anecdotal data, anyway.

Sunday seems to be the "most checked in" day (56%).

And the most usual length of stay seems to be between 5 and 7 days (69% fell into one of those categories).

Just opened the email, looks like DVC is notifying the membership of the change by email. Anyone else get it. WOW what a novel idea, notifying the membership by email.
Better late than never.

I guess we should get ready for a rush of new questions and posters.

And Sat+Sun were like 74% as far as "most checked in" days.

Thu+Fri were like 7-8% IIRC.

Got my notification this morning. I thought at first it was a change to the already new policy.

I thought that would happen. If you had not related it to this thread is might have survived.

You know I hate crowds and want to know when is the least busy day for check in. HA HA.

I think it gives a good sample.

Sorry I missed the polls, but I would have fit right in with the majority in both. :thumbsup2

Regarding the polls though - I wonder if the posters on these boards are a representative sample? It seems like most of us are trying to maximize our point usage as much as possible which leads to a lot of Sun - Thurs stays. Do we know for sure that the general population would be booking the same way we would? For example, a co-worker of mine owns DVC, and goes once a year for 7 days. Her arrival day decision is based strictly on airfare more than anything else. She isn't at all concerned about point conservation. She bought just enough points for a week and that's what she does regardless of check-in/check-out day.

This is exactly us, too. We go for minimum of a week and will generally check in on a Tuesday because of low airfare flying Tuesday's and Wednesday's. When we're flying all the way from Canada, I could care less how many extra points I use staying for the weekend... I just spent $2200+ in airfare to get there! :D

We may in fact switch to staying for two weeks and just going every other year if the airline prices keep spiraling out of control. :confused3

Certainly anything is possible, but my guess its fairly close to the rest of the world.

As for your example, is the coworker fine with burning 6 days of vacation instead of 5? I have to assume most working folks that go for 7 nights, would prefer traveling on a weekend day, so they can maximize the time at WDW on 5 days of vacation instead of 6-or minimized days at WDW with red eye flights.

No, they're not. The live and breathe DVC and in numbers are very small as a sample of the total DVC ownership.

I would not move out on a weekend to save points. I've rented additional points from people when needed. We go once a week each year for a full week.

The coworker travels mid-week to mid-week almost always so I guess using an extra vacation day isn't an issue to her. But, I do see your point about vacation time. With that in mind, I would still anticipate a lot more people arriving on Friday night or Saturday which is why I believe the poll numbers may be lower on these boards then in actuality at least for those two nights.

To me, it explains the boost in Saturday arrivals. From what I understood, many that fly in will do so on a Friday and stay off site or at a value (since it's just a bed and a shower that they need). The next morning, they get up early, check in at their resort, and then head out to the park(s). It saves them a bunch of points on Friday night, they get a shower and some rest, and get first shot at the rooms in the morning. Why spend a bunch of points for a shower and a bed? :confused3
