New Parking Structure/Pedestrian Bridge Question

Hi. Have been skimming this thread to see when the construction is starting, but don't see it mentioned. We're looking at coming end if August and staying at Park Vue or Desert Inn. Will construction have started yet? Trying to see if these will be affected when we come.

OK, at the meeting last night, the city and Disney has stated with the changes requested by the non-Disney businesses on Harbor, Disney will have to go back and amend their request, and then resubmit it. Then the city has said they will give 30 days notice minimum for when a hearing would be held.

Solets say Disney submits the revised plan in February, the hearing, where the project might get approved, or might have to revise it again won't happen until March.

So right now, Disney can continue with the demolition of the Carousel, and get the entire area to grade, but can't build anything until the city approves it. (and if the Planning Commission approves it,there is still an appeal process, and the City Council can also get involved).

Now, Disney wants/needs this new Eastern Gateway to open prior to Star Wars Land just due to crowd logistics. So when they can finally get started (May???), they will be adding crews and length of time per day they will work on the project, though they will have some noise limits imposed by the city.

Sorry but, yes, Construction will be in full swing, both on the new Parking Structure and Security Check areas behind the Harbor Hotel/Motels, and the actual bridge.

Thanks Darkbeer1. You're always so helpful.

So does that mean that places like Park Vue and Desert inn are no longer a good location? Where would you cross and enter the park? (again, sorry if its been said...haven't read all 15 pages)

Wait! What?

Doesn't Star Wars land open in like 6 or 7 months? I can't imagine redoing roads, building a parking garage, walkway over Harbor, and everything else, in 6 or 7 months....

First off, Star Wars Land is scheduled to open in 2018, so a year and half from now.

The current Transportation Hub and Security Checkpoint will remain until the Eastern Gateway is finished, and open (2018?).

Only then will Disney start to bulldoze the current area, and expect people to use the pedestrian bridge.

Same here!! We're also planning for the end of August and staying at the Best Western Park Place. I'm curious if we might be better off heading a little further away from the construction site?

That is up to you, most folks get up early anyways to get to the parks at opening, and so long as you don't plan to return to the Hotel too often, shouldn't be an issue, if you are one that likes the mid day breaks, it might be time to check out the new Hotels on/near Harbor and Katella, the Residence Inn Maingate, Springhill Suites and Hyatt House. Not too far away, but far enough to get away from the construction. Maybe also the Hotel Indigo. Want cheaper, maybe the Super 8 on Katella, or the Extended Stay America across the street from the Cheesecake Factory.

All are "walking distance" for most folks, but far enough away from the southern work zone (Disney Way). Of course, all have ART Shuttle service. And an ART Pass also works on the OCTA Route 543/43 buses that go up and down Harbor.

I emailed Hojo's earlier today to ask 2 questions:
  1. during construction of the new Disney parking structure, will Hojos' guests still be able to enter Disneyland from Harbor Blvd?
  2. Also, once the pedestrian bridge and new parking structure are built, how will Hojo guests enter the park? Will Hojo guests still be able to walk to Disneyland by crossing Harbor Blvd at Manchester Ave or will we need to enter through the new security gateway & walk over the pedestrian bridge?

Hojo's was great and they responded this evening! In answer to question #1, they said that during construction, the entrance to Disneyland on Harbor Blvd will still be open. Re: the 2nd question, Hojo's said that Disney has not told Hojo's yet the exact details of the cross walk and bridge. That makes sense to me since Disney's plan has not received full approval by the city yet.

I am so upset now. Because of my husband's job, we had to push our trip to June. We are booked at the Desert Inn so that we can go back during the afternoon with our 3 year old. Now I just don't know what to do. We can't afford an expensive hotel. We don't want to have to drive to and from the park or take a shuttle. We need a room with extra space (we are in a parlor suite.) So yeah...I am so upset and lost now. :(

Will we still be able to walk easily to and from the hotel/park? Or will we have to go some new/crazy way?

Will it be insanely loud in the afternoon? My son has autism so this concerns me if we go back to the hotel to rest (not nap.)

The new security will not be completed yet, so your way to/from the parks will be unchanged. It will be as close as it ever was. However, there may be some construction noise. I don't think that anybody will be able to tell you how loud or quiet that might be.

HTH, Bob

Once again, any major change in how people walk along Harbor won't happen until the entire project is finished, and the new Transportation Hub, Pummba Parking Structure and the actual bridge is open and operating. That is sometime in 2018, but might be delayed. Once the new options are available, then the city and Disney will start to do things like bulldoze the current Transportation Hub, etc.

So the issue is construction noise, and the area right in front of the former Carousel where they are building the bridge, but that would be a small detour along the street for safety reasons.

Thanks for the info. I guess we'll just have to figure out if we're willing to chance it with the noise in order to not pay an arm and a leg or have the hassle of a shuttle. Decisions, decisions.

I thought Star Wars Land is slated to open sometime in 2018... What's supposed to open in 6-7 months is Rivers of America and the Train

Are there laws around that sort of thing (i.e. construction noise)? Noise at 2pm in the afternoon is no biggy, but if they can still pound away at 9pm at night...or as early as say 7:30am then it may be an issue.

Yes there are rules and regulations set by the city in regards to construction noise. The basic city law limits the sound from 10 PM to 7 AM seven days a week.

But the city can add additional requirements as part of a building permit, so it could be even earlier in the evening.

Now,since most folks want to be at the parks in the AM, the issue is mid day breaks and when they stop in the evening, and when the parks close.

I am concerned about the construction noise as well. My 2 young kids will need afternoon naps, and we want to be within walking distance. Looking at Tropicana or HoJo for November. I was hoping to book soon (or at least before May(?) when construction starts). Once everything is approved, will there be any indication where and when exactly the construction will be taking place? I know that Tropicana and HOJO aren't very far apart, just wondering if either location would make a difference.

HoJo's is designed with major sound proofing due to the freeway.

Tropicana will be right next to the major construction of the bridge.

I would also look at the hotels near Harbor and Katella, the Super 8 and Extended Stay America are good low price choices, followed by the Hotel Indigo, plus the two new Hotels (Hyatt House, Springhill Suites). The last two might be out of your price range. Still less than a 1 mile walk and away from the construction.

There are rules, and there is reality...
There were complaints of 3:30AM construction noise at GCH, 2 months ago.
Perhaps in response to complaints, work will begin at 9AM (when the renovation resumes next year).

Noise restriction ordinances typically apply to hearing anything beyond the jobsite property...not within the jobsite. Most can work 24/7, just zero noise beyond the project.

You can make all the noise you want that is contained within the jobsite. While it is not right for the GCH guests, the noise ordinances oulined in the permits would not typically apply to them.

But it would apply if someone at a neighboring hotel heard, correct?
