There are some dining/shopping/tour perks that are usually available to
DVC members, right now best perk for members is $100 off Annual Pass BUT perks are not guaranteed and sometimes they are discontinued & perks can even be elimintated completely so it is not something that should weigh into your decision to purchase.
It helps to really read, read and read some more on DVC membership - threads on these boards are a great place to start and lots of great info at dvcnews.com too. Also, click on The Timeshare Store banner above and read their faq on DVC ownership.
DVC's best value is to use your points at a DVC resort; if you plan to trade out regularly to other non-DVC locations you are better off buying a different timeshare.
At upper right is link to
points charts for all DVC resorts - use 2010 points charts to determine what size villa/resort/times of year you'd most likely travel + number of days you'd typically book per trip so you can calculate how many points you'd need. If you plan to travel to WDW every other year you can divide that number in half (with banking &/or borrowing option & current Use Year's points you have enough to travel EOY) If you plan a trip every third year you can divide number of points you calculated by 1/3 (with banking & borrowing & current Use Year's points you'd have enough for ETY).
There are an abundance of contracts on resale market and some really great prices on SSR contracts. Buying via resale market allows you to buy into DVC with less points than Disney will require you to buy if you purchased directly through them(your membership will not be treated any differently if you buy resale so no worries there) Presently if you purchase directly from Disney you would have to buy minimum of 160 points. Many have purchased resale through the board's sponsor above - The Timeshare Store, our family included and they are excellent and knowledgeable!
Best wishes with your planning
