Did that change since last week? When I checked out on the 13th, the notice said: "For guests flying on Northwear Airlines and US Airways, you may only be able to check in one bag per passenger due to new airline luggage policies. Additional pieces may need to be checked in directly with your airline at the airport."

When I first read this post, I thought "no way" - why would Disney care if you had more than one bag to take to the airport regardless of what the airline does. But then when I rethought it, I realized it makes sense (although maybe it is only for certain airlines). ME takes your bags and you don't see them again, correct, or at least don't have to handle them again? So, if the airline charges extra for more than 1 bag, how would they get they extra money from you if you don't check it in yourself at the airport? It's not like the ME driver's going to pay for it!

Does that reasoning make sense, or am I missing something?

Another good reason to get an Owner's Locker.
We are up to three, and may get a fourth. My goal is to leave home with one small carry-on for the two of us. :thumbsup2

I'm thinking of shipping most of our luggage so I don't have to deal with it . . . .

I have thought of that too. What stops me is this: I have paid a lot of money for a ticket. I shouldn't pay more to have my bags sent separately. We can manage on one bag per person. In fact, the last time we flew, we had 4 tickets and only checked in 3 bags. In June, we will have 4 tickets, 4 bags and 2 carry ons. Should be fine. Oh how I love the washer and dryers at OKW.

I bolded your statement above for emphasis.

The luggage checkin at the resorts is NOT a disney function... and it is NOT related to Magical Express. These are people paid for by the airlines... the same as curb-side checkin. You can check in your luggage even if you are not using DME.

By contrast... when you arrive at MCO via DME... it is a Disney function (contracted out to Mears)... to retrieve your luggage and deliver it to the resort.

We have one OL... and we will probably get a 2nd (provided that John changes the biz model so the 2nd locker doesn't cost more than the first).

With 1 OL... I am very confident that I can travel using carry-on only. With a 2nd OL... I would be able to walk out the door with only my laptop bag... and spend zero minutes packing for WDW.

Independent of having an owners locker... I strongly recommend you read/study www.onebag.com . It will change the way you travel forever. I travel a lot for work (I have been home only 4 nights since 3/28)... and I always use carry-on luggage only... and unless it is an international trip requiring suits... my carry-on is generally only 1/2 full.*

* If DW is traveling with me... my carry-on is full... 1/2 of it being hers. She has not read www.onebag.com yet. :(

I almost choked when I saw that. We are grandfathered in by purchasing our tickets before the extra bag charge started, so I though we were cool with 2 checked bags. I can NOT travel with one checked bag. Can't do it. With the liquid restrictions we need one bag dedicated to liquids, shoes, and whatever other stuff we need. I know we can do laundry, but to avoid having to do laundry over and over again I need a fair amount of stuff for 16 nights in August. The outfits we start in will be gross by midday.:scared:

When we went last year for 9 nights we had 5 checked bags for the 3 of us, so I am quite certain I can't do 16 nights with 3 checked bags. Grrr!

I guess we'll be checking in at the airport. :headache:

It's not Disney's fault and I'm sure they don't want to get into collecting the extra baggage fee from guests at the hotel. The airlines are just desperate for money these days. :headache:

I don't see these new rules affecting us.We've always been able to manage with one checked bag per person. I bet we could do 3 bags for 4 people if we had to. Last trip, we ended up using the washer and dryer for the first time and came home with luggage filled with clean clothes instead of dirty ones. :laundy:

Can we check in luggage at airline desk at the hotel using DME tags and then drive the rental car to MCO? In other words, use DME to transport the bags but transport ourselves to the airport.

What is an owner's locker? Not familiar with this.

Nevermind, I found it. Very interesting, but kinda expensive.

That also makes it difficult w/the weight restrictions some airlines have placed. It had never been an issue for me, so imagine my surprise when I roll up w/my hard case Samsonite that I felt so proud I packed for the girls and I into one. They 50 lb limit or charged a fee. Eek! Mine was 49.5.

How much do owner's lockers run?

I travel as light as possible, and take very few clothes....we wash daily at DVC. but it's those extra shoes and cosmetics that keep my suitcase full and bulky and heavy. I'm thinking Owners Locker filled with all those heavy bulky things is definitely the way to go! If I leave a couple pairs of shoes, laundry supplies, hair care supplies and some cosmetics, I'll be able to fly easily with one lightweight bag containing only clothes for both of us. I figure we might even be able to get it in a carry on size!

I don't fly often, usually only when I do a three night trip with a friend, and then one carry on and one checked bag is enough, but I may be flying for my family's January trip - there will be at least four of us, maybe 5 or 6, it will be a six night trip.

I'm alittle confused about this new rule with ME. If I'm leaving from JFK and I'm checking my own bags and paying for any extras, ME is picking them up and delivering them to the resort - correct?

Is it on the way home that I will have a problem? If so, how does this work with ME? If they are my "ride" back to the airport, how specifically does it work with my luggage? Don't they come to the room, pick up the bags, load the bus, and drop everything off at the airline? How will it be different now that we have to pay for extra luggage?

Sorry if these are silly questions, I must be missing something?

TIA

So now I just heard on Fox news that AA will charge for the first bag = $15 added to the second bag charge. My owners locker is looking better and better.

What will you do when the airlines start to weigh passengers?

What will you do when the airlines start to weigh passengers?

I have to say I believe our weight gain has something to do with all the charges, or a good excuse for them to use. I remember reading that the air lines used a weight of around 175 for a adult male and about 135 for an adult female 30 or so years ago and have had to make some adjustments to that as the years go by. Now I can only talk for me and my DH we have not seen those weights for many, many years. So it only makes sense that if there is a weight limit on the plane it will have to be made up somewhere.
Easier for me to pay the extra $$'s than lose the weight.
