Wow! I've been working with 24MP sensors since they introduced them with the Sony A900/A850. It's great for resolving detail but it totally eats up storage space. Now the entry cameras are at that level? I'm a little shocked I guess.

Can't wait to hear who purchases the first red one! :goodvibes

Most of my RAW files on the Canon T2i are around 24 MP. I know memory is cheap, but I'm good at stopping there and not increasing any more. I'm filling hard drives way too fast.....

I wonder if this is the same sensor as in my NEX 7 and the Sony A77? If so what will they do with the D5100 and D7000. I can say that my 16MP D5100 handled noise much better than my NEX 7.

MOM2RTK, my D5100 RAW files were around 24mb and so are my NEX7's. Why are they the same file size when there is a 8MP difference?

It is thought to be the same sensor - although perhaps modified to Nikon's specifications.

The RAW files on the Sony A850 topped out at 36mb with that 24mp sensor. My understanding is that in the cameras since the A850 Sony has used the equivalent of what they previously referred to as CRAW. CRAW was always an option on the first Sony camera's and most people felt that little, if anything, was lost in the compression. So now the A77 (and apparently NEX 7) produce RAW files at 24mb. Still, 32MB cards don't seem to bad to have on hand these days! I didn't see what the actual file size was on the new Nikon with the 24mp but unless some compression is being done it might be more than the 24mb the A77 and NEX 7 produce.

Wondering if Nikon's announcement of the D3200 means that a D5200 is also coming soon. :scratchin

Its my understanding that the 24mp sensor is a Sony that have used recently in their latest cameras. It is not the same that is used in their FF cameras. In the reviews, the 24mp sensor is noisier than the 16mp sensor that is used in the Sony cameras, Nikon D5100, D7000 and the Pentax K5. I use the K5 and would be adverse to going to a more noisy sensor. More megapixels is not always the answer. I think its about time that other manufacturers are adding a little color to their DSLR lines.

Giana'sPapa, I've had the D5100 and Sony Nex 5n with the same 16 mp sensor as the K-5, and I can say my Nex 7 with the 24 mp is definitely noisier. The Nex 7 does seem like it holds more detail especially when zoomed in or cropped.

That's what I have been hearing. Noise is an issue for me. My manufacturer is rumored to be introducing some new cameras and if they use the 24mp sensor, I will be saving me a bunch of $$. I am extremely happy with the current 16mp sensor.

I'm interested in how well the entry level lenses hold up to this kind of resolution. More MP doesn't matter if the lens can't render the details well enough to use it.
