New Movie Release at Sea Prior to Theater Release?

I have never heard of this happening but someone in our group says that sometimes Disney begins to show movies on board prior to them being released in the theater.

I'll say I'm a skeptic and don't believe this but thought if there was a place to find the right answer it would be here! :)

Has anyone ever experienced Disney showing a new movie on the ship prior to it being released in theaters? If so, how early?

It was done on the dvc cruise. With the nature movie sorry forgot the name. It was at least 6 months in advance that movie was shown before it comes out in theatres. Haven't heard of it happening before this.

Typically new movies will start the same day as it opens up in theatres.

Update I googled the movie its born in china opens up April 21 in theatres. Member cruise was sep 28. So about 6 months and 3 weeks it was shown on the dvc member cruise till it comes out in theatres.

Ooo! We're excited to see this movie when it comes out in April!! Someone in our group was wondering if there was a possibility of Beauty and the Beast (opening in March I believe) being shown on our February 11th cruise. I said 'no' but someone told me I was wrong.

Time will tell... :)

Usually, movies premier onboard the same day they are released on land. There are very few exceptions.

In December, Rogue One was shown onboard the Magic the night before the official theatre release. I think it was a 1030pm showing or something like that.

With Beauty in the Beast not opening in theatres until March I would say it is highly unlikely to be shown a month earlier onboard the ships.

I believe that the DVC sailing was an exception rather than the norm.

The only time I would think *MAYBE* is if a movie is doing the release in say NYC and LA earlier than national/international - but I can't recall a Disney or Pixar movie doing that. At least not in a while.

And I'd venture to say it's a pretty sure bet that they're NOT going to be showing BATB before midnight on 3/17. Especially not a month early.

In three years with the company, the only time I saw this happen was for Inside Out, however, that was a DVC and was only shown instead of a show on the one day. Also, pretty much nothing could be taken into the WDT, no cameras, phones (only WP), tablets, bags and everything/one had to go through the security scanners (the ones from the gangway) every time they went into the theatre...

No on the BATB movie coming out a month before theatrical release. We have seen many PremEARS on the ships but never before they were actually shown shoreside.
Maleficient, Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain America : Civil War, The Avengers, Age of Ultron. I remember being in the theater on board for each of those at 12:01 AM :)

Both The Force Awakens (first showing at 8 PM IIRC) and Rogue One (10pm) were shown on Thursday night on the ship when the official release date was Friday. But, I believe they were showing on land also on Thursday night for sneak previews. I would be gob smacked if Beauty and the Beast played a month before the release date. But if there are sneak previews on land on Thursday night then I wouldn't be surprised if it were shown on Thursday night on the ship.

Thanks everyone. As much as I would like see both BATB and the new China movie I'm happy to wait until they're released on land. The person at the other location was so confident that it was a possibility that we could see them on our cruise.

Thank you for sharing your experiences.

When something like that is released, does everyone get a chance to see it, or do you have to be lucky (or concierge) to get tickets?

Everyone gets a chance... sometimes they do lotteries where you put down your choice in order of when you see it. For Star Wars I think I remember you could see it at midnight in either 3D in the Walt Disney Theatre or the movie theatre on the ship or the next day and they had everyone put their preferences 1-2-3 on a form and kept it fair that way. There might have been strings pulled so concierge got their first choice, but I don't recall hearing anything about it if they did.

My experience is that sometimes, they don't even do the premiere on the day that it opens on land. Last cruise we went on, Captain America: Winter Soldier was opening the friday before we got on the ship. Hubby and I skipped a chance to see it just after midnight, because we were going to get to see it 'all week' on the ship and then the entertainment director decided that he wanted to do a second 'big premiere' and so it was not showing on the cruise until halfway through the week. We had scheduled our special dinners, etc for later in the cruise specifically because we figured we would be seeing CA:WS several times as soon as we got on the ship (major super hero geeks) so it was frustrating that we ended up only getting to see it once.

I was just going to start a post about this. We will be on the Thursday, March 16th sailing on the Wonder and was hoping they may premiere Beauty and the Beast that night versus on Friday which will be Pirate Night.

They do the 'Prem-Ears' on Thursday evenings--12:01AM (so technically Friday, but it will be listed on the Thursday navigator). They will show the movie other times during the cruise. Our Alaskan cruise Prem-eared 'Pete's Dragon' at midnight Thursday, then showed it 4 times on Friday, once on Saturday, and twice on Sunday (our last day)--that last day was a sea day and the first showing was in the Walt Disney Theater (which is the showing we went to.)

More and more "big" releases seem to be showing Thursday evening, instead of "Friday" at 12:01 AM. I assume this is with the studio's blessing. So if this is being done on land for BATB, then it might be done on the ship too.

Let us know what happens!

This is why I have no intention of joining any cruise groups elsewhere. Why get information there if you just have to come back to Disboards to verify everything with the real experts? :upsidedow

(this post is meant in friendly jest and humor)

we saw "odd life of Timothy Green" the night before it was released on our 8/2012 cruise (like after our dinner seating) and Strange Magic was shown during our 2015 cruise the night before it was released (we passed on that one)

Wilm love to see BATB on our 3/19 cruise. No need to catch it early and was hoping we would get it then
