New "Mom's to Be" Thread!

I am considered very high risk. My cervix shrinks too fast. From the beginning of my pregnancy, I was at the doctor every week. One week at reg. dr, the next week at high-risk dr....being monitored for contraction, measuring my cervical length and then an in-depth u/s. Plus, I had to get shots every week in my butt.:faint:

I saw so many pictures of my boys before they were born, that I was tired of u/s. We are refusing treatment from the high-risk dr. this time around, so it will strange to see (or not see) how I do without so many u/s's.

I never really thought about the effects while I was having so many. My boys are both healthy, so I don't know how much of an effect it can have. I do believe in overkill. Nothing is ever a surprise when you get u/s's every other week.

Got it! "Incompetent Cervix" issues (I hate that!) scared me more than anything this entire pregnancy... I pray that this one goes as smoothly for you as your previous ones, since you know what to expect from your body!

As for nothing being a surprise..... I'm wired to appreciate that! :rolleyes1 :rotfl:

Great topic!

I feel ultrasounds should be the standard every other month. It's an easy, non-evasive test that can be done in office.

I don't believe any amount of ultrasound your doctor would give you would do any harm to the baby.

Yeah, normal pregnant women have a cervical length of 30-40 (3.0-4.0), mine was in the high teens way too early.

mine was about 2.5cm at 24ish weeks, but I went on bedrest for PTL anyway so i was already being monitored. Also, by that point obviously things are a bit different than trying to stave off a birth even earlier!

Preterm labor is scary. My daughter was born 8 weeks early and I didn't have a clue about what was happening. Now, people call me the "gynocologist". ::yes:: I have done more research than you can imagine.;)

Hey guys!! May I join you? My DH and I just found out we are expecting. :cloud9: I am only 4 weeks along, so I haven’t had my first appointment, and I have a million questions. I thought maybe you guys could help me with a couple of them that can’t wait for the appointment. First, this is our first, and I’m 36 years old, which automatically makes it a “high risk” I guess. :confused3 I don’t want to be overly cautious or concerned, but I do want to be informed and healthy. So my questions are:

A lady here at work said I shouldn’t vacuum or mow the lawn (push mower) during the first trimester. I think it sounds crazy, and my mom said they didn’t change a thing when they were pregnant – if they wouldn’t have vacuumed, the house would be a disaster I usually just push the front lawn, and we want to mow tonight. I enjoy it….. is mowing okay?

Also, my DH and I fish tournaments together. Now I know being in the boat is fine, but with tournaments, you fish whether it’s sunny, rainy, calm or windy, and sometimes the waves get big (3 or 4 foot to 8 or 10 foot). I have no concern with the up and down, but sometimes if the lake is churned up, and the waves are coming just “right”, you can take some bumps and get banged around a little. How much of this can you take?? How big or hard can the bumps be safe?

One more thing – I read you shouldn’t eat bacon. I had BLTs two nights in a row. Is this true, or one of those over cautious things??

I might have to stop reading until my appointment when I can get all the information straight from my doctor. In the meantime, can anyone give me their experience or knowledge on the above questions?

Thank you!!! I’ll try not to bother you with too many annoying questions.

Hi! :hyper:

I see no reason why you can't vacuum or mow a lawn this early...and I've never heard that bacon thing..I'm pretty sure you can eat bacon :)

I had another prenatal appointment yesterday and it didn't go so great.

My urine is good - no sugar, no protein, nothing bad. I haven't gained any weight, I've actually lost 3 pounds since 10 days ago when I was at the doctor last. Last time I was seen they did a random glucose and it was not good. My OB had me check my sugar 6 times a day until my next appointment (2 weeks). My doctor didn't like my blood sugars from the past 2 weeks and my Hemoglobin A1C wasn't too great (that tests for overall sugar management). I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes - already - at 10 weeks pregnant. I am being referred to to an endocrinologist who specializes in GD. I also have to begin seeing my OB every 2-3 weeks rather than every 4-5 weeks. I can have no sugar now - none - and only 1 serving of "white" carbs like rice and bread daily. I also have to limit my fruit and fruit juice intake. My OB was talking about how if I didn't get this under control my baby could have serious problems, the placenta could have problems, and I could have problems. It's a pretty scary thing even though I know it can hopefully be controlled. I was just so shocked because normally this doesn't develop until late in pregnancy, not 10 weeks.

Edited to add: If anyone is dealing this, I would love any info you have on good things to eat, ways to keep sugars in check, ect...

My sugar before meals should be 80-110 * mine has been anywhere from 52-186 in the last two weeks.

My sugar 2 hours after meals should be 100-140 * mine has been anywhere from the low 60's - 275.

I had GD with both my boys. From very early on. It sucks...I had to go on insulin both times.

Try a protein before bed to see if your fasting sugar is ok. I always did a spoonfull of peanut butter just before I was going to hit the sack.

Hi Ladies..... I need to talk.....

Some of you will really understand this topic, but this is new to me so I need some guidance.

Let me start from the beginning. For MANY years I worked as an executive assistant at a financial company. I supported many levels of management and became friends with whom I still chat now and again with. Their kids would play at my desk while the parent finished up something before taking the kids home. One of those managers was June. Her cube was right next to mine and we worked together for quite a while.

We got to know each other very well. From the time I met June I knew her oldest DD was sick. At the age of 2 her daughter was diagnosed with neuroblastoma cancer. This little girl endured 2 stem cell transplants and chemo and radiation. She went into remission twice, only to have the cancer return stronger each time. About a month ago, I got an e-mail saying that time is not on her side and she probably won't make it through the summer. Well, this morning I got the terrible news via e-mail. This is what is read "This morning at around 3:30, as June told her how much she was loved, she quietly fell asleep and stopped breathing." She was 11.

I am devestated. I can't stop crying, I feel like I should do something, but what, I don't know. My hormones are crazy right now and I can't seem to think straight. I want to go there and hug her but I know I'll be a blubbering idiot and don't want to make June feel worse. I will be attending the services, but have never been to a service for a child before so that alone will be hard to handle. What do I say? Can I keep it together? Ughhh!

I'm sorry if I dragged down this thread, I just needed to post this and I know I can get some support here.

My god daughter died last August (age 9) of brain cancer. I have had 3 other children in my life die since then. It's amazingly overwhelming, but I really think you should go. My best friend (god daughter's mom) does know who did and didn't show up. Your support by being there will mean more than you will ever know.

Congrats! Don't know about the boat. But you are ok to mow and vacuum. And I believe bacon is A-OK. It's hot dogs and lunch meat that can be on the No-No list...

Welcome and congratulations!!!

I was not allowed to vacuum or mow the lawn in my pregnancies, but that was because of my cervix. So, there is truth behind it in a sense, just not for regular pregnancies.

As far as the boat goes, the only thing you really need to worry about is losing your lunch.:thumbsup2

Bacon is perfectly safe as long as is perfectly cooked. Love me some BLT's too!;)

Do you have a guess on your due date so I can put you on the list?

Welcome!

You age puts you in the "high risk" catagory, so your doctor may monitor your progress a bit more than others.

Pushing a mower or vacuum or any other type of lightweight equipment is also fine, just don't over do it. Usually you'll find yourself much more tired in your 1st trimester, so you may not want to even do it. ;)

We've had boats and I wouldn't worry about the waves until you are further along and have a bit of a belly. Then you may want to find a seat and stay there if it gets choppy out.

Most foods are fine, including bacon. The ones to watch out for are processed meats (lunchmeat & hot dogs), fish (mercury levels) and sushi, and make sure all your meats are cooked well done.

Again, welcome to the group! Feel free to ask away anything you need to know.

Do you have a guess on your due date so I can put you on the list?

All the on-line calculators say February 15th. And our 2nd anniversary is February 17th. :)

Okay - and did anyone else's husband go from being excited to stressing out to being excited to stressing out??

Tasha, are you around? I was thinking of you yesterday! Are you getting final stuff together, or is your little guy here a bit early?! Not much longer!
