We bought in at SSR earlier this year as well. There was a similar incentive thing going on at that time, which we didn't choose to take advantage of. I think the deal was that we could get $10/point off, as long as we agreed to NOT USE our points during the first year. What this amounted to was we were buying in UY 2004, but could not use our points in UY 2004. We could only begin using the points in the 2005 UY.
So, as another poster pointed out, we would have had had no points to use anywhere, on this contract, until the next UY begins.
This was pretty confusing, but we finally figured it out. We decided that we definitely wanted to use the points in the current UY, so we paid full price and have been contentedly using our points ever since.
As for buying additional points to fill out a need for a particular stay - my understanding is that the minimum contract they'll write is 50 points. So, from Disney, you can never buy less than 50 points, and then you're getting the full
DVC-membership deal: 40-50 year term, welcome packet, deed, etc..
If you want a few extra points for a single stay in a particular year, you need to pick them up on the aftermarket, i.e., the rent/trade board.
I hope I've not just confused the issue more for you.
