New Matterhorn Effects Revealed

Try leaning forward some during the ride to diminish the pain. Seems to work for me. It seems to change the motion and engage the muscles better.

I brace myself by pressing down with my feet on both the Matterhorn and Indy. It really helps stabilize your body and it works like a charm!

OH WOW! I'm going to miss those glowing crystals but man, I've got goose bumps over the new display and Yeti!

For those that experience back pain on the Matterhorn, you guys should NOT be bracing your back against the seat. I don't know who designed those contraptions of horror, but the gentlest way to ride is not apparent by the way the seat is shaped. You need to sit leaning forward with knees bent, almost like in a rowing position. Leaning back forces pressure on the delicate tailbone, while leaning forward (away from the seat back) puts your weight on the sturdy ischium, the lowest part of the pelvic bone (located under the curve of your butt cheek). Also, leaning forward prevents the seat from repeatedly punching your back. The spine can take swaying but it's not so good with jarring impacts.

And last, leaning forward with knees bent allows more leg room for those with long legs than keeping legs straight.

I did a diagram showing the basic "Matterhorn Position". (I know...don't quit my day job...lol) The yellow dots represent where I make contact with the seat as I ride. Feet flat on the car floor, hands gripping the handles, my tush pushed into the seat crevice with my body leaning forward, full weight placed on my pelvic bone and off the tail bone.

DH is 60 and I'm 44, and we usually ride the Matterhorn at least 2x per day when we go. More if the day is quiet! No bruises and no sore backs.

Just thought I'd share. :)

Yes!

I learned to do this on our last trip or else I'm thrown around like a rag doll, lol.

You know it's bad when the "New Matterhorn" thread is filled with tips on how not to die of pain riding this one. I'm totally there Friday morning, but man, there is just no escaping the pain.

A Yeti that actually moves! WDW fans will be so jealous....well, jealous until the pain in their lumbar region strikes up like a fire.

I love the new effects, but I'm still not sure there's enough advil available for me to get through this ride....

New effects look amazing! I'm thinking that this might actually help convince my 9 year old DS to ride, he doesn't like to sit alone in seats so he has always refused to ride in the bobsleds - but he loves this kind of Yeti themed stuff - he wants to go to WDW simply to ride Expedition Everest after watching a youtube POV video of it.

More importantly, thanks to those who have provided the info to help survive riding the Matterhorn! I'm going to lean forward with much gusto next time I ride and hope for the best! :D

Looks Awesome! Great job Disney. Still hoping Disney will bring back the old two seat Bobsleds (or maybe add them in the mix for us tall people). I sure do miss that extra room.

The new effects are awesome! I plan on trying to ride this again with the seat position suggestions (and maybe a Fantasmic cushion) to see if it makes a difference.

I only have one concern about the refurb...I hope they keep the old yeti outdoor scream sound effects. It would not be right to walk by an operating Matterhorn ride, and not hear the yeti roaring. AAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Wow!!! Love it. Matterhorn has always been my favorite since i was a kid. This makes it even better! Now.....if only a smoother ride. Haha.

DD and I rode yesterday morning about an hour after park opened. Line was meeting in the back. We did SR line! Waited about 10 mins. Yeti was really cool, and yes the ride was bumpy. Oh how I wish I had a cushion! I'll try the leaning forward think next time.

I just thought I'd update--the new effects really are as awesome as they look on camera. I rode it Friday morning and using SR, was one of the first people on. Sadly, even with the recommended positions, my butt and tailbone still hurt 2 days later.
