New Luggage Policy?

Hi everyone!

I wrote this on the Luggage Tag board, but haven't heard back from anyone and since my trip is in less than a week...so I figured I would re-post here, sorry!

I apologize if this question has been asked, but I just wanted to see if anyone has heard this...

I realized that I am now 1 week away from our trip to Disney and I never received my luggage tags or DME packet....I only received our magic bands. I booked with my TA and called her concerning the matter.

Disney told her that they are now implementing a new system where they only take the luggage tickets that you get when you check your luggage at the airport...you give that to the CM in MCO and then that's how its done now...bc they were losing too much luggage. Apparently its a fairly new policy and my TA wasn't pleased that they didn't notify her about this. I booked in May and she told me that if people are still getting the tags its bc they booked further in advance than me,...

Anyone know if this is true?

Also....I've never done this whole luggage thing..I'm a little skeptical and think I feel more comfortable ensuring that I have my bags in possession. Did it work out okay for you all?

Thanks!

I got luggage tags a few days ago. I booked in July.

I'll speculate your TA forgot to book DME when you made your reservation. Your TA recently booked DME but not in time to get your luggage tags.

Second speculation..Originally (not sure if it's still true) Disney sent the luggage tags to the TAs in bulk. TAs had to spend time matching up the tags with the customers then mailing them to their customers. if still the case some TAs might not like the work.

Thank you!

Yeah....I thought it sounded a little fishy especially because I haven't seen anything up on the Disney website about this.

According to all my confirmations upon booking, DME is on there and confirmed again once I got all my TA vouchers as well.

I might call Disney on my own just to make sure its all okay. However, I still don't know how I feel about letting Disney get my luggage. I like the idea of knowing that I have it and my bags made it safely to MCO.

That's what I think too. It would be alot of work for them to find the DME luggage without the yellow tags. Then they would have to lookup what hotel you were staying at. With the tags, they look for the yellow tags on the luggage belt and pull them off. The hotel is marked on them.

Each has an individual bar code. When the bellman delivered my bag on one trip, he scanned the barcode on the door jam and the tag so that it's tracked.

I agree the TA messed up some how, if DME was losing lots of luggage there would have been rports of that before now.

Op Last year I didnt have tags I stopped at the DME counter in the airport and gave them a description of my luggage and the airline checks and they got my luggage no problem

You may call DME directly at 866-599-0951

I would recommend that you call and explain your situation and discuss your options.

Of course, if you plan to get the luggage yourself and take it with you on the bus then the luggage tags are not important.

Hope you have a magical vacation.

Giving to the airport Magical Express welcoming counter CM the white (or green) luggage tickets has all along been the secondary system of having DME handle your bags when you did not get the yellow DME tags in time.

I booked my room only reservation at the beginning of October for my December 6 trip and already received my DME packet with luggage tags. I also called DME to get more tags sent (which I have also received)...I think your TA forgot to give your flight information to DME and instead of admitting to his/her mistake, they are covering it up.

I called ME directly, yesterday because we changed up our post-Thanksgiving trip. They said my new tags should arrive in about a week. They are definitely still sending tags.

If thy were losing so many bags we would have heard about it here. We never do. Makes no sense.

Agree that story doesn't add up. "Disney was losing bags so they decided to make bags less identifiable."

However, I still don't know how I feel about letting Disney get my luggage. I like the idea of knowing that I have it and my bags made it safely to MCO.

We prefer to retrieve our luggage from baggage claim and schlep it to Magical Express.

I have had too many trips to too many places where checked baggage did not arrive when I did. While certainly not the norm, I prefer to know my bags arrived at the destination city and there is nothing wrong with them (I insepct them when I pull them off the baggage carousel to make sure it doesn't look like they have been tampered with/opened, and if they have been I deal with it in the airport at the airline baggage claim counter).

After many hauls through many airports I now have checked bags that have four spinner wheels each and move very very nicely, which make navigating MCO or any other airport so much easier.

Doing it this way does have a few downsides:

- you get to wait for the bags in baggage claim
- you have ot haul your bags across the airport terminal -- and at MCO that may mean going up, across and back down; fortunately they have elevators :-)
- there may be some hauling at your resort if the bell services people aren't paying attention when the bus arrives

Some positives:
- you know your bags made it to MCO intact
- you know your bags are on the same bus as you going to your resort and that they made it to the resort
- your bags are available to be taken to your room when you checkin (they can be stored by bell services if needed)

I realize others feel differently about their luggage and enjoy using the luggage service Disney provides.

Don't you just love it when TAs cover their errors with a story? Sounds like OP needs a new TA IMHO

To be fair, if the TA called CRO rather than calling DME directly, it's very possible that that's what she was told. Disney phone CMs make stuff up all the time.
