PARAMUS, N.J. -- A coyote bit a teenager Friday at a New Jersey high school, school officials said.

The Paramus Catholic High School student found the wild animal not far from school just off Paramus Road.

The teen boy told school officials he thought it was a dog run over by a car, so he brought it to school, but instead it was a coyote.

An animal official said coyotes rarely come in contact with humans, but this one did.

Police said the teen apparently was unaware he was dealing with a potentially disease-ridden animal.

School president James P. Vail told NewsChannel 4 that once the teen let officials know, they immediately called the paramedics, who took the student to a hospital.

At this point it's unclear if the coyote had rabies, though officials at Paramus Animal Control said that animal was docile.

There was also a news article in my local paper that said something about the coyote attacking a person's dog and taking it away. It was a small bichon frise (spellin?).

Anyone else hear about this? I'm surprised it wasn't posted here... :scared1:

For those who aren't from NJ, Paramus, NJ is a shopping mecca town with at least 4 major malls all within about 2-3 miles of each other. There is a lot of residential property as well, especially where the coyote was. It was right near the Paramus/Washington Township border...

We have coyotes in my town in northern NJ. Not many, but a few! I never seen one, but people I know in some very wooded areas around here have! I originally doubted it, but enough people that I trust have said they seen coyotes, so I believe!

If the coyote was found in the middle of the day just lying there then there's an excellent chance it was ill. Lack of aggression is not an indicator of it being rabies-free so I'm glad they took the teen to the ER.

Wild animals have been adapting to the human invasion of their territory and are more and more likely to be found in areas we'd think of as urban. Heck... we even had one of NH's moose make it's way down to us (near Cape Cod). The poor thing was thought of as being a figmnet of imagination until it was hit & killed :(
Coyotes in general are becoming more agressive toward us. Over the last couple years in our area there have been reports of a trio attacking a horse and of one attacking an older man and a young child as they walked a field. They're loosing their fear.

Glad I got out of there when I did. (note TAG)

Now in FL., I only have to worry about fire ants, scorpions, black and brown widow spiders, foxes, bobcats, snakes, killer bees, sharks, termites and a few others this Old Paramus Boy can't think of right now because it's past my bedtime.

i am not surprised...i live in sussex... i have seen all type of animals around
(not just the farm animals)

Only in jersey where a turkey can hit a car, and the insurance company doesn't believe you.."There aren't wild turkeys in New Jersey!"

Are they sure it was a coyotes and not the jersey devil?:rolleyes1

This is very untrue. I have about 15-20 coyotes who roam my hillside and they are not afraid of humans at all. Back in the fall, my boyfriend and I were out walking and it became dark as we headed back down our road. A coyote stepped out in front of us about 10 yards away. He was not afraid of us at all, he just started walking up the road in front of us. He kept turning around and looking at us as if to say "Why are you following me?" Finally he turned right into a field.

My neighbor down the road lives by the river. She has a pack of at least 15 that live behind her house. They are not afraid of her or her husband.

I have spotted at least 3 in my yard during the day. My boyfriend shot one earlier this winter. They come after my chickens and have tried to get into my barn.

People think coyotes don't exist in the NE but they do. They are extremely adaptable, and as WE HUMANS move into their territory they will adapt. Did you know that if you kill them, they will just have more babies in the next litter to make up for those?

Sussex county, also - we have coyotes, but you rarely see them. Guess we have enough land around. But you sure can hear them. What a racket! When we do see them, they want nothing to do with us and just keep moving along. We also had a fox on the property earlier this year who must have had a litter of babies. If you were within a couple hundred feet of her or her den she would screech!

Exactly! No wild animal that allows a human to get that close (other than squirrels being fed in a park) should be considered healthy.

It really is sad. We've got a large state park near us, and every now and then I see a fox wandering the road late at night near it. Until this area began building up, they would ahve had a lot more land to roam on.

My sister is in the process of clearing a lot of trees from her property. It had been abandoned for years, and had become a coyotte run. She was in the driveway BBQ-ing one night and one walked by her not 15 feet away and glared at her. The state FGW guy has been out a few times giving them advice on what to do to be able to live safely with the coyottes. One of them is to push the tree line back a lot further from the house. My niece left her crocks outside by the trampoline one night, and it was found chewed and mangled about 40 feet away the next morning. My sister said she her her dogs going crazy that night, and knew why. Also she finds coyotte poop on her front porch a lot in the morning, it's the wild dogs marking thier territory according to the FGW guy.

Well, you obviously aren't insured by the company I used to work for, there's a huge flock of wild turkey's in the woods by their offices. :) Of course there's also some real turkey's inside the building too. ;) :rotfl:

We're in Bergenfield and the past several years I've actually seen deer. I've lived here for 50 years and that was the first time I've seen a deer. We also now have a couple of red-tailed hawks that frequent the area. I also saw a fox on Knickerbocker Road by Demarest. I guess the Beagle will need to be supervised a little more when he's outside.

You're kidding me--you don't see deer? In Middlesex and Somerset counties they are all over the place in huge herds! Same thing as those disgusting Canadian geese! I also saw fox, coon, skunk, possum, woodchucks (Not MOMTOMOOTOO's kids, either!), hawks, wild turkey, and turkey vultures when I lived there!

I had a coyote walk right out in front of my truck and take his time strolling across the road in broad daylight. This was one street over from mine. Of course we have woods all around our neighborhood and have lots of wildlife including turkey and deer. We see deer on a daily basis.

I forgot to mention the skunk, possum and turkey. But deer were usually north of us (not enough wooded areas). But now the northern areas are being developed so I guess they are moving south.

Wow, all these familiar names of places! I grew up in Dumont, so Bergenfield, Paramus, Washington Twp, Demarest and Knickerbocker Road are SO familiar to me. I have an aunt and uncle in Washington Twp on Pascack Rd, which I think is very close to the Paramus location where the coyote was found. Also have a bunch of relatives in Bergenfield (where we shopped at The Florence Shop and saw movies at the Palace. :)) When I was a kid, we used to go on "bike hikes" to the Demarest duck pond. :)

Years ago, I went to a shower in NY (south area??) and I was shocked by how many dead deer there were on the side of the road. :(

Florence Shop was my very first Credit Card.

It was where I got my very first bra! :lmao:

I also won a drawing...a $5 gift certificate from there...I was so excited! I remember so well the shirt I bought...navy blue, like a henley. It also came in shiney bright yellow (to die for! :rotfl: ) but it was $6. Geez, I can still picture the layout of that store!

Sorry...OT!

A little OT, but spray the shrubbery around your house with a mixture of cayenne pepper and water to keep the away. They will eat your shrubs to death, and if spooked can actually crash through windows.

Actually, the only place I've seen them is at the other end of town where the vegetative debris is dumped. I would love to see them around the house.

We saw this on the news a couple nights ago--wth?

I used to love going to the Tenafly Nature Center, taking the kids for hikes and stuff, but I will never go again because someone told there are coyotes there! First time I ever heard of something like that around here--and now this-ugh!

Im in Bergenfield too(grew up one town over-NM)
The Florence Shop-I remember buying my bathing suits there, and when my husbands grandmother died, we were rushing around to get her a dress to be buried in, it was late and the Florence Shop had closed but they opened up for my MIL and I to go shop.
You wont find many places who do that for you anymore.
The movie theater is now carved into 4 or 5 little theaters, its so weird to go to the ones upstairs and be so close to that ornate ceiling.

I think there are lots of deer in Alpine up in the Boy Scout Camp--but it would be a huge surprise to me if I saw one wandering around here!

There was a bear in Dumont a couple of years ago! :scared1:
