New Jersey Residents: Suprising News - Coyote in Paramus, NJ

Actually, the only place I've seen them is at the other end of town where the vegetative debris is dumped. I would love to see them around the house.

I actually feed them (deer) cracked corn at my home in the Pocono's:goodvibes
I love having them around. As for the coyotes we have them even in lower Westchester Co in NY. As we continue to develop North and West of us wildlife is foraging for food and new habitats. Progress has created a monster. As for this animal biting the poor kid, his bringing it into the building caused the attack and the animal was euthanized and is being tested for rabies.

I live and work on the Morris/Essex Border adn I see tons of wild turkey at work all the time. They are always wandering around our parking lot.

Less than a year ago my town had a black bear roaming around. The town used the reversed 911 to let residents know to stay indoors.

There's always a few yearly occcurences of this happening before, but I believe this only made so much news because it actually attacked someone and killed a small dog. Pretty interesting though, and to a previous poster, Paramus road is pretty far from Pascack Road (it's on the other side of Washington Township). I grew up in Woodcliff Lake and used to drive on Pascack Road all the time.

Great to see so many New Jerseyans here! :cheer2:

I'm still shocked that this happened in Paramus though. I mean a major part of the town is route 17 and route 4, and there aren't many wooded areas for this coyote to travel through without being seen first. The towns to the north I could imagine as they have a bit more land, but not in Paramus.

WOW - I've seen some deer / turkeys before in Bergen but never a coyote:eek: I work in Hackensack and drive thru Paramus almost daily.

You take route 4, right? The north end of Paramus is mostly suburban homes which is bordered by Washington Township, Ridgewood, both of which have extensive woods and homes with more property than average. Paramus Road and Paramus Catholic High School (where the attack occured) is right near a state park too along the Saddle River, which is I guess how the coyote got all the way down to Paramus in the first place...

As,an ex Jersey City/Bayonne guy, growing up in Bergen County in the 50's and 60's, I don't recall the amount of wildlife then that there is around there now. I lived in Westwood, New Milford, Palisades Park and Ridgefield Park, owned a business in Cliffside Park, never saw a deer there ever.
I started working in Morris County around 1985 and quickly became aware of the deer population.
Now, I live in Sussex County, and do a little farming, so it's a constant battle with the wildlife.
And Bears!!! You know where they bring the "problem" bears from other parts of the state? Yep, beautiful Sussex County.
We have coyotes around quite a bit, but I was surprised to hear about the one in Paramus.
As I'm typing this, I'm looking out on my front lawn, there are six deer there and it's broad (but gloomy) daylight.

Hunterdon here.. and last year was my first sighting. Or should say first hearing. It was around midnight and the dogs in our area were going nuts. Barking like mad which is very very unusual... Then I heard it.. the tell tale howl not a wolf howl a coyote howl. Oh and it was a group. They were in my neighbors yard and her dog had been out- they were trying to circle it(It is a HUSKY!!) the husky was barking very ferociously and scared them off (that or my neighbor did) But that night I was floored that they would be so forward as to come into a neighborhood. And this house was right smack in the middle of the block! Crazy coyotes!
In our yard we have seen
Groundhogs
Hedgehogs
Badgers
Possum
deer
rabbits
turtles
turkeys
hawks
Falcons!(they are gorgeous!!)
We have wild america right in our yard....
oops forgot the biggie!! The Black Bear!!

Deer aren't nocturnal so it is not surprising to see them in daylight. My uncle lived on Cedar Rd in New Milford till he died in 1983.

A few years back we had a coyote problem in our town- which pre-Rita was heavily wooded- but still a city-

The Coyotes were coming in to the city -mostly at night and snatching people's cats and dogs- and a few who had other small animals- because of a drought...

It was a scary time- and I didn't have a pet at the time- but my kids didn't play outside at night and my mom wouldn't let her cats out the door at all- and even started taking in the neighbor's cats in the evenings...
