Recently did a quickie visit to DL with the family and have a few observations....first up Hungry Bear Restaurant.

I really liked the view, very relaxing and not super crowded. The kids enjoyed observing ducks and the canoes/boat/ship.

Food: I got to try the Fried Green Tomato Sandwich....flavors were good but the tomato was burnt and over cooked. The sweet potato fries were bland and squishy....I'll try the slaw next. We also got the salad with watermelon salad....the concept was good however it lacked freshness in order to have them ready in plastic containers....the chicken it came with was undercooked as well. DH got a burger with

Lol this is what happens when typing with a baby in hand.... To be continued....lol

I had the fried green tomato sandwich twice in the past week. The first time, it was great. Liked it so much I ordered it again two days later. That time, it was a bit overcooked and lacking in dressing, so it was a bit dry. Still tasty but not as good as the first time I had it. I had the mango slaw both times, which was very good.

We had hamburgers with the slaw last April and we were pretty happy with them. Definitely better than the burgers they served before. The slaw was probably the best part of the meal, really tasty and fresh.

We also order one of those gigantic lemon cupcakes (the one with the bumblebee) and it was yummy. :goodvibes

Wait, the fries were served in a covered plastic container? Silly Hungry Bear--you can't cover fried foods or it steams them and makes them squishy.

ETA--Oh, wait, I see that you were talking about the salads now.

We really like the onion rings and the lemon cupcake. DH gets the chili cheeseburger and says that's pretty good for a park burger.

The onion rings there are sooo yummy! I always sub them for the sweet potato fries.

Thanks for the review. This was on our "maybe" list (and mostly because of the fried green tomato sandwich). Sounds like a good choice...

I'm also a fan of the Fried Green Tomato sandwich. It's delicious even if the bun is a little much. Also prefer the o-rings (request ranch for dipping). DH likes the chili cheesburg as well and we both like the warm fruit pies for dessert. As park dining goes, we give the Hungry Bear two thumbs up! :)

This new menu is way better than their old dry hamburgers they used to serve. We like the Chili Cheeseburger too. A big mark against it is they don't have regular fries. We've tried the slaw and the sweet potato fries and both are just so-so to us. I am all for new options, but fries are popular for a reason. I can't imagine why they wouldn't offer regular fries. It seems an easy thing to do. :confused3 We don't really care for onion rings, but haven't had them there so I can't speak to those. But usually you take a bite and the entire onion comes out of its "shell" all at once.

Doesn't make any sense to me either that they won't offer regular fries. My boys don't like the sweet potato fries, slaw, or onion rings, so we order their burgers a la carte. We "save" a little bit of money at least and don't waste food. DH and I order the onion rings as our side.

Thanks for the review! DW and I had stopped off at the Whistle Stop Cafe (The place where they filmed Fried Green Tomoto) in GA and had Fried Green Tomatos for the first time... So good! We cant wait to try them at DLR:thumbsup2

i freakin love their sweet potato fries so if anybody wants to give them to me I will not turn you away :rotfl:

Me too! And I don't like regular fries, so now I finally have something good to get- so sick of yucky french fries. I loved the fried tomato sandwich and sp fries when I went, yum.

I really didn't like the fried green sandwich but it was a personal thing against the slaw. My husband LOVED it and I would recommend anyone try it if they know what's in it. It was well made, I just didn't like it, KWIM?

I hate sweet potatoes but LOVED the sweet potato fries :)

Oh ftr, we went there twice because it's one of my favorite places to sit and relax..the next time I ordered the chicken sandwich which was awesome :)
