New IPhone Data Plan...

if you already have a set plan, you can keep it even if you upgrade your phone. You're not changing your contract.

If you change from your current plan, you can only choose what's available today. Like my minute plan, I have 750 minutes for 60.00 a month. If I wanted to up it 900 minutes or something, I'd have to change it to what's available now. However, I will not be able to go back to my original plan of 750 because it's not available.

If you have a smartphone, with unlimited data at 30$ a month, and you feel you're a high use person. Then DON'T change your data package. If you're like me and won't be getting an Iphone or using the netflix app or other crazy mega data eaters, then opting for a lower 200mb data package might be ideal.

If you're new to AT&T... then pick your option. And you can always upgade as you see fit. And they even allow for 1gb more for 10$ a month... that's a pretty nominal fee.

America is so far behind other developed countries in internet and cell data speeds it is a joke. We aren't even in the top 20.

We aren't? That surprises me - I've been to several European countries recently and I thought their cell technology was very "archaic" compared to the states. My sister just moved back to the states from Italy and her 3 years with cell phone service technology and speeds sucked to say the least.

I was waiting to buy an iphone for this new one to come out (since it was leaked a few months ago). Since att changed their unlimited option i have changed my mind about buying it. I think it was really underhanded of them to do this right before the new iphone came out, and i can't imagine apple is very happy about it. I'll just continue on our non-contract att plan.

I just got an iPhone. My bill has been astronomical. What is considered data use? I normally text, upload pictures to Facebook, send pictures via text to friends and surf the internet/Facebook/Disboards. It sounds as if I should turn on my wifi more often.

Any suggestions?

The bolded items go against your data usage.

I have a Blackberry. Does anyone know if AT&T offering the same new plans for other smart-phones? I actually just started using the BB again after having turning it off for a few months to save $$. I assumed that they put me back on the $30 BB data plan, but I would be happy to at least have other options and would limit myself to less than 200 mb/month to save $15 on my bill.

Unless you are on wifi. Data transmitted at home, with wifi or work.....it isn't data "amounts"

Noted. It appears that the poster I quoted was not using the WiFi and was wondering if it should be switched on due to the types of services being utilized.

Terrific.
I use the web to check Facebook, message boards, the Weather Channel and Google maps when I'm away from a computer. I exit within a few minutes most of the time. I also receive my home emails, maybe 20-30 messages a day, and occasionally send a message on the phone because I can't access the account from my work computer.

Would it be safe to say that if I have used less than 15mb since switching on 6/7/10 (according to my online summary) that I would remain under the 200mb limit for the month?

you will be fine... just don't change ur plan or you will lose your unlimited...

AT&T's announcement of their new capped data plans has generated a lot of discussion amongst current and future iPhone owners. In short, AT&T eliminated their $30/month unlimited plan for new iPhone customers starting on June 7th. After that time, new iPhone (and other smartphone) customers have the option of $15/mo (200MB) and $25/mo (2GB) data plans. AT&T, however, has grandfathered in existing iPhone customers by allowing them to keep the $30/month unlimited plan if they desire.

But with the new iPhone just around the corner, several readers wondered if that guarantee would hold even if they chose to upgrade to the new iPhone. It seems like it will.

AT&T has replied on their Facebook page indicating that current customers may keep the $30/month unlimited plan even when they upgrade to a new iPhone:
The good news for current customers who love their unlimited plan is this: they are not required to switch, even when it's time to upgrade to a new phone. So you are welcome to keep your unlimited plan :)

Once again, this goes against me. :confused3

I've been wanting an iPhone for several years. But I couldn't justify the cost of the phone. Well, the price of the phone went down...right after I committed to another ATT phone for two years. Finally, last winter, I could get a iPhone for $99.99...but I couldn't justify the $30/mo data plan (with no texting). I finally settled on a Samsung with a $20/mo data plan (with unlimited texting).

And now, we have the 250 megs/mo for $15/mo.

Since there's WiFi in the household, and numerious hotspots around me, I don't think I'd go over 250 megs in a month. However, I won't be eligible for an upgrade for another year and a half.

occasionally new plans aren't as good as the old, so not changing from what you have is sometimes a good idea. And if a particular plan goes up in price, you're usually locked in at your current rate unless you change it.

I'll have to check for a few months to see if it's worth it to downgrade. I think it might be worth it, but who knows how i'll be using my phone in the next couple of months. I don't want to short change myself.

you can always purchase an iphone online used like through ebay. That way you're not upgrading before you're allowed to. If you're happy with that iphone, then you can upgrade to the new one when you can.

There's a lot of people that use ebay to get phones in the middle of their contract.

I think I know the answer to this question, but I am going to see if there is a "professional" out there! My husband currently has a regular AT&T cell phone on the 3g network that has unlimited data for $10/month. If he were to upgrade to an iphone, would he lose the unlimited data and have to choose between the $15 or $25/month package? He really wants an iphone and we didn't get one before the unlimited went "bye bye". LOL! I know new AT&T customers do not have the option of the unlimted, but didn't know about existing customers who just don't have an iphone. I hope this makes sense.

the Iphone is a different Data plan than the 10 dollar plan your husband has... so yes when he upgrades he will have to choose one of the Iphone data plans they are offering now.

Here's one for you. My iphone is the original. My data plan is the original $20/unlimited + 200 free texts (all the texting I need).

I want to get a new iPhone (well I need to, mine is dying). My husband now wants to get one too. Since we have a shared plan does this mean I need to get a new plan too? Or can I keep my sweet ol' school plan?

We're not planning on changing our minutes, just replacing my iPhone and adding his on.

because data is not a shared thing, you can keep your unlimited data for 20$. When you add his line, then you will have to choose a current option for his line. Minutes are the only thing shared on a family plan, everything else is per phone line. So each phone can have its own options. Unless it says "family share".

There were times i'd have different options than one of the other lines, but what i did to one line didn't effect the others.

I would check with them, to see if you can go with family share unlimited texting, if he also wants to text. For me, even when i upgraded my data/text package to an unlimited family texting, it never took away the original data package I had on my line. Which was 1mb for 5$, i signed up for that ages ago with my simple phone. When i got my smartphone in december, i had to go to the 30$ unlimited data plan.

I seem to recall that the original iPhone plan was not grandfathered in with new equipment. So before the recent changes, if you bought an 3G or 3GS phone, you needed to buy a new plan with $30 for data and $5 for 200 texts. withthe recent changes, I am not sure if you are eligible to opt into
an unlimited plan for $30 plus whatever you want for texts. You can go into your account at ATT online and I believe it will give you your options. -- Suzanne

some times it's best to call to see what your options are. Some times i've gotten different responses from different people. But I call asking for options, and let them know i'm not ready to change anything just yet. Unless it's a great deal.
