hi, i'm new at all of this, i have never been to disney world, but my family and i plan to go this summer, myself, husband, 2 children, 8, and 6. anyway i really do not even know where to begin, can someone please help me...................

Hello and welcome to the DIS I know exactly how you feel as I was in the same position just a few years ago before our first trip. To directly answer your question we have done both. That being said if you really have no idea at all a travel agent could be useful - just be sure to use one that specializes in Disney travel, there is alot to know and they seem to have the best chance to help you out.

if you are looking for a suggestion there are a number of travel agents that people on these boards use regularly. My wife and I used Dreams Unlimited and were very happy with the service they provided.

If you ever wanted help...this is the place to be!!

1. The very first thing that I did to get a lot of information was to buy the Birnbaums Walt Disney World Travel Guide. This will help you sooooo much. It has a lot of great ideas and pictures, and it really will help you with the planning.

2. Our first trip we used a Travel Agent- National Travel. She planned it all. The Disney resort, Character meals, tickets, parks, etc. This will probably be your best bet.

3. One of the first things that you need to do is decide when you are going, and how long you are staying. Then- Where you would like to stay. At a Disney Resort (the best!) Deluxe, Moderate, or Value. ALL are nice! - or off property.

4. There is sooooo much to do! If you can, try to visit the main parks- Magic Kingdom, Epcot, MGM and Animal Kingdom- we also visit Typoon Lagoon and Downtown Disney.

We have stayed at POR(port orleans riverside), SSR, BWV(broadwalk villas), and off site. You should really pick a budget, and then decide where you want to stay.
1st thing I would do is sign up at www.mousesavers.com they have updates, codes for all kinds of things like rental cars, and offer suggestions. If you get their newsletter, you get special offers on things like tickets and town cars.

2nd thing is I would go to www.allearsnet.com and check out the hotels and floor plans(also avail on the disney website), and the menu's so you can decide where you want to eat and sleep. This will help you decide if you want the dining plan or not.
You have to decide if you have the time and experience to book this yourself. I find by doing it myself...I make out better, but time is money.
Finally if you do decide to do it your self you should start reading the code board. Good luck...ask away...if money is no object we can help you spend it!!!

but they have a section of the website for just your question. A travel agent is great if you don't have time to put into planning the trip. If you are like me and you enjoy planning trips, then this discussion forum is the place to be. The place to start is to determine your limits: budget and time and then your preferences. After that, doing research is easier. Remember not to over-book yourself. Plan for rest times even with 8 and 6-year olds.

You could start by going to Disneyworld.disney.go.com, that will show you all the resorts and parks with virtual tours, just to see what you like. It also will show prices and tell you about different packages. We started with that 1st just to get an Idea before we started to make plans. Also if you have a lg. party, the magic your way plus dining is great. (1 sit-down meal, 1 counter service meal, and 1 snack) per day per person. Good luck, DIS also helped out with resort questions that we had and it has great reviews on everything.

We love Wilderness lodge, but we go in Feb. If I was going during the warm months, I would probably go the Poly, GF, Beach club. etc. Oh. You have to go to the (Hoop De Doo Revue) It is the best dinner show for kids and adults

I loved both the Yacht & Beach Club Villas! You really can't go wrong with either. The pool is so WONDERFUL!! Our friends stay at the Wilderness Lodge and they won't stay anywhere else. SO, just look at the websites and do some tours through the net. That should help you. Let me know where you decided to stay! HAVE FUN!!

I definitely agree with the recommendation of grabbing a copy of Birnbaum's Walt Disney World. Although you can find so much here, it is sometimes nice to be able to read and have hard copy info. If you are a fan of using the internet a lot, it is best to spend some time "shopping around" before you do anything, then you get a general idea of the rates. Also, if your dates are flexible, that will sometimes help as a day here or there can make a difference. Not sure when you're going or where you fly out of, but Southwest just reduced its fares bigtime. When I booked recently I paid $200 r/t pp, just yesterday, the fare dropped to $120 r/t pp for a ns flight. I now have a $160 credit with Southwest! Anyhow, they are definitely worth checking out as no other airline could come close for our dates. As stated by someone else, get yourself signed up at mousesavers.com....happy planning to you!
