New Glasses - Getting Used To Them

It's been a while since I got new glasses, but this new pair feels kind of weird. I have a very strong prescription. I got them from Zenni, so I think the fit may be slightly off. It may just be that they are so clear and not scratched - everything seems so bright! I am trying to get used to them though - any tips? Can I self adjust? You'd think after 30 years of wearing glasses I'd know this stuff!

Is Zenni an online retailer? I've worn glasses for 50 years and not sure how online retailers do all the measurements that the dispensing opticians to.

You send a picture of your prescription and enter all the numbers. I did not have a proper fitting this tiem, but I had my IPD from a previous RX - I don't think that changes. I feel liek these maybe sit "out" just a little more than my old ones and that is causing them to feel just a tad weird.

I once had a pair from the eye doctor that did not have my line of vision aligned correctly.

Went back in, they remeasured and redid the lenses.

Are they single-focus lenses? If not, poor alignment could be the issue.

I have a prism in one lens and have to have my frames adjusted very precisely so that they sit on my nose a certain way. Takes a couple days for me to be sure they're adjusted correctly.

Also, if that lens isn't set into the frame precisely evenly, I get weird distortions.

I'd never order from anywhere but a bricks-and-mortar optometrist for those reasons.

They are single vision. I am can see very minor distortions if I look down through the bottom, but that's it really. They are somewhat rounder than my old frames. Honestly, I'm probably making a lot over nothing. I wore the old frames for a long time, probablt 7 years or so, so the difference may just be jarring. I am trying to get used to them.

Did you just get new frames/lenses or did you get a new prescription that necessitated new lenses and frames? It takes me about 4-5 days to adjust to new frames and a week and a half to adjust to a new prescription. But I also have to adjust to my glasses every night when I take out my contacts, so this could be a me problem.

All new frames and lenses with an updated prescription.

I bought a pair from Zenni once. I went into a brick & mortar optical store at the mall and just had them check the prescription to make sure it was correct. It took five minutes for the reassurance it was done correctly. The didn't even charge me. But, it should be minimal if they do.

You know, that's a good idea. I bet anywhere could just adjust them a little. I feel like they just sit a little far...it's barely noticeably, but people who wear glasses know it can make a huge difference.

I am getting more used to tehm though. It's my fault for waiting so long for new ones.

My wife had an issue with the dispensing optician that was attached to the eye Doctor's office, but owned by someone else. She put the new glasses on and saw double and got sick to her stomach. The owner of the store insisted they were the correct prescription. He was kind of a grumpy old guy and said "let's walk across the hall and have the eye Doctor check them". They did. Within 30 seconds the eye Doctor looked at the dispensing optician and said "dude, these aren't even close to her prescription". The glasses got remade, correctly.

I have a strong prescription and have trouble with the size of the lenses. If the edges of the lenses are too thick, there is distortion around the perimeter because the lenses get thicker and more curved at the edges as the lens itself gets larger. Maybe this is an issue?

Actually, I hate getting new glasses. I find I adjust better if I wear the old prescription for the whole day when new ones are fitted, and then put on the new ones first thing the next morning. This doesn't work so well when keeping the same frames, of course.

They are strong but I went witht he highest index I could get so they aren't too thick (thick enough though - I have pretty poor vision!). I did put them on this morning and they do seem better, so maybe strating fresh today is helping. My eyes do feel kind of dry though but that may just be the weather.

Generally when getting used to new prescription or new fit (since lens shape and size can affect things) my eye doctor has always recommended putting them on first thing in the morning. There's something about your eyes where it can adjust easier right when you wake up as opposed to wearing something (contacts or glasses) throughout the day and then trying to switch. That's also why you'll have people (including me at times) who wear contacts during the day then switch at night to glasses, it can take a moment for your eyes to readjust.

My eye doctor has also said in the past when my eyes were changing more (they've been steady for years now) that if you need to you can wear the new prescription or contacts or glasses in increasing amounts of time so let's say you wear them first thing in the morning but need to switch out after 2 hours, go ahead and do that then the next day try to push for longer, next day longer, etc so your eyes can adjust that way.

At least according to my eye doctor I'm not really a good candidate for online purchasing due to needing the focal point very close to the center (1 eye with an astigmatism and the shape of that eye, strong enough near sided for both eyes, etc). There's more error I guess for me to not have glasses that fit correctly. It doesn't help that my face is small and I wear kid's glasses (sometimes called adult-child, juniors, etc) and have tried and failed in adult sized frames (even petites).

Yeah...covid made me wait the longest I have, it was just the nervousness of being at the eye doctor with someone who needs to be very close to my face. Normally my eye visits I've been pretty good at every 12-18 months (really should do 12 months but have stretched it before). I went 27 months this time (my last appointment had been fall of 2019). Luckily my vision hadn't changed (and if I felt it had I would have forced myself to go in sooner) and I had enough spare contacts to work but it's not something I know I should have done.

I was actually able to get an appointment for the next day (even though they had been booked out for about 3 1/2 weeks at that point) because I went in in close to mid-January when Omicron was bad bad bad and people were cancelling their appointments. I spoke with the eye doctor and he had heard from many patients they had been delaying their visits quite understandably. I went into my appointment with a KF94 mask and had to adjust a tad because the mask stuck out to the point where it interfered with the eye pressure (puff of air) machine. And that also was something mentioned that a lot of people had had these issues.

So you're far from alone on waiting it out too long :flower3:
