New Flickr Layout

I wonder how many people, besides actual Pros, need even anywhere near 1 TB. I use 1 TB hard drives to backup all of my pics, and I'm nowhere near that limit. They're Jpegs from 2007 to mid-2009; and all RAW (with some jpeg converts) since then. But my photostream is more of a "portfolio" than anything. So I definitely don't need that much room. Not that I'm complaining.

Don't worry. If you think you need more space, you can get the "Doublr" plan for up to 2TB and a low price of $500. :lmao:
I wonder if that's better than the old "Pro" plan with unlimited for $25. :confused3

It sure seems there were multiple heavy users uploading TB's of RAW photos and Flikr decided to curb that practice.

I don't think you can upload RAWs.
And I doubt they were really trying to curb current abuse. I think it came down to more of, "ok... if we start giving it away for free, we need to prevent future abuse." Plus, there may be concern about video uploads.

But now you have the opportunity to use your main photostream at your "portfolio". And then also use privacy settings, to make flickr your online backup for all your photos.

Thanks! I guess I just don't speak the new Flickr language......

Ha ha, Flickr never greets me in English so it comes as no surprise that half the new stuff needs some sort of decoding to make sense :lmao:

I really like the look of the new layout. It's a pain to try and find things, but I guess I will get used to it. I've been away and just got back and logged in to upload some photos and didn't know what was going on! Trying to figure out how their Pro subscriptions work first before I decide what to do ....

Meantime.... what happened to the collections? Have they done away with that feature?

As someone who just joined Flickr, overall I like the new design, except for one thing, the inability to easily view the "additional info". While I haven't used Flickr often, didn't the old layout have the basic info setting to the right of the photo? In the new version, the black photo area almost fill it up to the bottom, if its needed or not, so you have to scroll down and click for additional info every time. :( I can't believe the designers thought that was a good idea.

I would think they could have fairly easily put in on the bottom line by the favorite and comment icons. I'm trying to get some shot ideas/inspiration for my trip next month, and this is really slowing my viewing down. In particular in looking at night shots and trying to see what settings were used. I'm not the only person who likes to see what settings people used am I?

Also, I'm aware that I can click on the three dots and select the exif data, but in most cases I only want to see the basic info and again it adds unnecessary clicks!

I shoot RAW from my D90 and upload it via iPhoto without any problems.

Doesn't iPhoto convert them to jpeg as part of the upload? I've never seen raw files on Flickr.
Edit: looked it up, Flickr does not allow raw file storage. If you can view your images in a web browser, they are not raw.

Then it must be iPhoto doing some form of conversion during the upload process- I don't have to convert them before uploading.

I don't like how when I log in, my page is now all comments. Mainly because I've never paid much attention to comments before, and I've just realized that I have a creeper who has been "following"/stalking(?) me for several months now, commenting on photos of myself and my sister about how gorgeous we are. I hope this is someone I know who is just being funny, but right now I'm seriously creeped out.

Onto other things - I like how it looks, but I haven't quite figured it out, yet. It's a little too "Facebooky" for me with the cover photo and profile picture. Also, I don't know about all of you, but I work very much in sets, so the photostream is kind of pointless to me. I wish I could default to sets on my main photo page.

And this new free 1TB thing.... I'm pretty sure I upload less than 1TB. But I have a Pro subscription. I'm wondering if I should drop the pro and work with the free 1TB? But I like Pro, and it's not a huge expense, so I'll just keep weighing pros and cons until my subscription is up. Is anyone else thinking about dropping Pro? Thoughts?

I'll probably be dropping my Pro account sooner or later. The only thing I'll miss out on is the Stats feature. And none of the newer accounts (Free, Ad-Free, Doublr) even have that feature. But since I don't really live or die by those stats, I can do without them. The only reason I got a Pro account in the first place was because I wanted to be able to display more than 200 pics in my stream. And since everyone gets that now, I can't see a reason to keep the Pro.

I'm a bit undecided as to what to do with my Pro account. I feel pretty much the same as you as I signed up for Pro because I wanted to use it for back up storage for my photos so I have thousands of images on there from the last year alone. A part of me argues that I don't need a Pro sub now .... and then part of me argues that it's only a couple of $$ a month and since I seem to spend more and more time on there lately, I wonder if the ad-free alone might be worth it

Since I was already pro... I like the stats, and to get unlimited storage grandfathered in... May be worth keeping.

I think I'm going to do the same. It's those dang ads I don't mind paying to keep away from me :lmao:

How do you put one of your photos on your home page for the top portion of page? Can't seem to find it on the FAQ's.

If I remember correctly, there might be something you can press on the top right of that little section.

Hover over the photo. A button will appear in the top-right corner that says "Edit Cover Photo."

Does anyone know if/how you can customize the layout of your 'home page' / photostream? When I first logged in and saw the changes at the end of last week I am sure it prompted me to do it but I skipped over that at the time, having been away for a week and just got back home. Now I can't find the dang option for love or money :rotfl:
