New fireworks and... snow!

We were there too last night but due to the crowds (and needing to get DD9 home early enough for a decent nights sleep-softball tournament) we actually left the park just before the FW and watched from the parking structure. They were pretty cool. We could hear some of the music. The fireworks at the end were really cool-my DD said they looked like someone painted them in the sky.

We saw the tree with it's basic lights on (I thought it was a little dim) but my nephew saw it when they lit the tree and said it was pretty cool. The LCD lights on the tree looked like snowflakes.

The castle looked great again this year.

Here's a decent pix I took

Sorry it's not better, I hand held it and tilted it to keep a tree out of the pix.

Here's another one, different exposure

Best part was my nephew performed in his 1st parade & it was awesome! I had a hard time not crying. :cloud9: I was so busy watching him (and video taping with one hand) that I only took 2 pictures-here's the best one-he's bowing to his mom!

When we went last year (first time for us to see the holiday fireworks and "snow"), my DD, who was 5 at the time, slept through most of the fireworks, but woke up to see the snow and immediately stuck her tongue out to catch a few flakes! Too cute. Thankfully she didn't catch any!
:rotfl:

What exactly happens during the light show? In other words, are the same icicles that are hanging off of the Castle also adorning the buildings on Main Street, or are there just colored lights on Main Street? Do they all light up in unison with the Castle or does the Castle light up first, then the trees by the Partners statue, etc., then Main Street, then the Christmas tree? And does this light show happen just before the snow, or is it off and on all night? I want details (since it is supposed to be so different from what they did last year)!!!
SherryE, do you peek at your gifts before you open them? :goodvibes You cracked me up with your overflow of questions about the lights. LOL This will kill you but - we didn't even see the light show, we just watched the fireworks show.

Why isn't anyone talking about the lights? They made a big deal out of it yet it seems like no one noticed anything special? I know Sherry and myself have worked ourselves up into a tizzy about seeing the new stuff so someone please put us out of our misery and give us some details?? TIA!
Again, I was just focused on the fireworks show. LOL The lights were - eh - to me.

Hee hee! I have wanted to know about this darn light show and what exactly what was done to Main Street that is supposdely different from previous years, but we can't seem to get an actual account of what is happening! I have worked myself into a DLR holiday frenzy, grasping for any little detail! You, ParkHoppa and I are inquiring minds and we want to know!!!:goodvibes
You're killing me over here! :rotfl:

It's bubbles. Very light, tiny little bubbles. They look great under the lights!

Last year, I read an article that I found to be very funny that discussed exactly what the "snow" was made out of and just how much time went into creating the perfect mix for appearance, drifting ability, AND to still be able to be swallowed in small doses when (not if) people (not just kids) opened their mouths and stuck out their tongues!

Does anyone know if any of the lighting/snowing takes place earlier in the evening - and if so, about what time? My kids cannot stay up late, so we are only catching the fireworks after F! on Sunday (hopefully)....so we won't be on Main Street. I would love to see the castle lit up, and the tree, etc... before then. Does anything happen maybe around 6-7pm? I just can't keep them up late - we'll pay dearly for it the next day....

Thanks!
Kim

Last year they did at least one (but I think two) short castle lighting ceremonies + snow before the fireworks. And these were nights when the park closed early so the fireworks were at 7:45. If you are there when the fireworks are later, they might have more. They are short but the song is beautiful and its definitely worth watching.

Thanks so much, Disneydaz, for posting those lovely pictures! I have always loved those reindeer! I also love the gingerbread men too! Did your nephew have fun doing that? I can't see how it could be anything BUT fun!

The Castle does look great now that it is in its full holiday glory, and it actually looks like it has a little something extra this year too, a little extra oomph! Maybe it is an added dash of color on top of the sparkly icicles, but it is definitely beautiful and slightly different from 2007.

I think this thread (and other similar ones about the current DLR holiday merriment) are great to have because there are many people who are not going to DLR this holiday season and want to see what they are missing and know the details of everything so they can feel like they are there! For me, it is kind of a time saver and planning aid, because if I know of certain things that are in the park (treats, merchandise, decorations, etc.), I can decide beforehand if it is something I need to add to my list or something I don't have to bother with!! We don't always hit every area of the parks or every show/fireworks display (there just isn't enough time for everything), and we end up missing certain things, so this helps prevent that issue too if we know we have to make a point of seeing something special! At least now we can decide on a definite yes or a definite no on what we already know is in DLR this holiday season!!!:goodvibes

Am I the only person that cries during fireworks at disneyland during christmas time? And the snow...omg and now the castle, which I haven't seen in person yet...DH is going to think I am looney!

We don't always stick around for the fireworks, but when we have, I don't cry (and I am a big weeper who even cries over commercials and things like that!!), but I do get goosebumps and that little tingly feeling! The snow we just happened to stumble upon accidentally last year - it was serendipitous timing after we left Carnation - and I have to say, even though I knew it wasn't real snow (obviously), I had that giddy, childlike feeling of, "Oooooohhhh...snow!" My mouth was probably all agape! So dorky of me! That Castle and the IASWH facade are so gorgeous, though, that you really have to just stand there and take them in, and kind of appreciate all the work that went into that lighting. See, I wasn't sure I would be able to get my friends to stick around in the parks long enough this year to see the light show (they poop out early), so I wanted to be able to tell them what was different about it in 2008 and what is worth seeing so they will stick around. Thankfully, Courtney provided us with the video link and I know what to tell my friends about what is different from last year!:)

I've read they do it nightly at 5:30pm and 7:30pm. I'm sure it goes on during the end of the fireworks when it snows too..

No-you're aren't.

I don't know what time the do the tree lighting but I'm sure a CM or City Hall could tell you. I would imagine that it may even be earlier as the days get shorter. I know my nephew saw it between the 3:30 and 6:30 parades. Also was after flag retreat which is 4:30. He said it was very pretty with the snow flake images on the tree and the lights in the garlands flashing/twinkling.

Last year we watched them lite up the castle which was very dramatic. Sorry I can't remember what time it goes but again City Hall, or CM, should know. I know that last year we waited for snow to fall after the lit the castle but it didn't. Don't know if it's changed for this year.

As for the snow, my DSisters stayed to see the FW in the park on Friday as well as the 1st Fantasmic (most people were on Main St.) They watched the FW from NOS area and that's also where they caught the snow (new location). They said alot of snow fell, much more than last year. They were covered in it. :goodvibes

Did I read that correctly, Disneydaz? Did you say that your sisters experienced snow in New Orleans Square this year? Oooooooohhh!!!! That IS new!! I wonder if it is snowing in any other lands besides NOS and Main Street this year? I always thought DLR should just dump snow on the whole park, but it never seemed like it was heading that way! This is too much excitement to handle!!!! :cool1: :yay: I LOVE that idea of getting the snow experience in locations other than Main Street! This whole DLR holiday season - from the treats/eats to the decorations in A Bug's Land to the snow in NOS to the IASWH lights and the Castle's icicles and the 700 Christmas trees - sounds even more magical than previous years, if that is possible!!:santa:

I don't think the snow in NOS is new...I remember watching the fireworks from there a few years ago and having snow. It also snows in front of Small World.

I guess we were never standing in NOS or in front of IASW at the right time to catch the snow, but I thought it was a Main Street-exclusive thing, so it is good to know we can get snow in other places!!!

I don't know if the locations are new, but the amount of snow has been tripled. My DBIL heard a live broadcast from DLR on Friday and that's what they said. According to my DSis'es it was a lot of snow! Great news that you don't have to stand on Main St. to see it. :crowded:

Yes, Main Street can be crazy and overcrowded. We didn't plan on being there for the snow but just happened upon last year, which was nice, but it was very crowded. So if we can get snow in another part of DL without having to be caught in that crunch, it may be worth it!:thumbsup2
