New Fences and Signs Going In at Beaches

Hindsight is always 20/20….I think its kind of stupid to create a beach front atmosphere, play G rated movies to attract children to a location, promote a safe family setting next to a body of water where predators are known to leap onto land and kill prey. Add to the setting its alligator breeding season making them more aggressive.

My family grew up enjoying Chesapeake bay and Manasota Key beaches. We’ve never had any interest in Disney’s themed beachfront. I can see how a family would trust the beachfront setting Disney created.

They have never leaped onto land and injured anyone at Disney World. Where did you get that wrong information. The only people wrong in this horrible tragedy are those that illegally feed the gators.

The current fence is definitely temporary. The posts weren't even cemented in.

That said, decisions about next steps are made in private by a committee, likely with extensive involvement from both resort executives and in-house legal counsel for this particular situation. Anything you hear from a CM is pure speculation. If it happens to come true, it was just a lucky guess. (You were correct to specify that it was a rumor :) I'm just saying that there's really no basis for it whatsoever at this point.)

I was referencing at Disney World.

A safety audit would have warned of the possibilities. My guess is someone overrode the audit and went for a beach theme to attract vacationers considering a vacation outside of Disney.

I guess you dont think there is a need for the big M to put HOT COFFEE on their cups too. When you have a litigious society you have to CYA.
I don't. It's coffee and you did not order a iced one so its going to be hot. So stupid.

But what if it's iced but is really, really spicy? Is that HOT.... or COLD..... we may never agree.

Having done my share of risk audits...

They weren't common when the Poly was built. So I doubt one was done at all. When you do a risk audit, you multiply likelihood with impact. The impact on this was high, but the likelihood is fairly low. And you get to override the risk audits - if the cost of compliance is high and the risk*cost of failure is low, you are expected to override the audit in most industries.

Now, in retrospect, a risk audit for the bungalows should have included the possibility that people would "feed wildlife off the balconies, increasing the risk of predators in the area, and increasing the risk of aggressive behavior on the part of those predators" - but I'd bet no one thought about people feeding birds - much less gators - off the balconies.

Safety audits are usually tiered and conducted on a routine basis. Disney has a safety officer (Greg Hale) who is ultimately responsible for WDW safety. News reports have indicated CMs were complaining about aggressive alligators prior to the accident.

When you combine Disney employee safety complaints, inadequate warning signs and showing evening kids movies near the waters edge during alligator mating season….the safety director should be fired.

Oh, I know they have one now, I was referring to a risk audit when the "beach theme" was chosen - back around 1968.

Seems to me that the beaches at HH, Vero and Hawaii are all just as dangerous. Sharks have to be dangerous too. Wonder when the ropes are going up?

This is crazy. There are always risks: sun, heat, falling, showers, meteors.... I am sure those are all bigger risks. You can't control everything.

A news report today Galveston's West Beach, TX, a man has lost his leg due to a flesh eating bacteria. There are risks and dangers everywhere.

:earsboy: Bill

Sammie, I hope you keep this thread going so people can keep posting updated pictures with any new changes to the beaches at all the villas. I haven't heard anything about the Wilderness beaches yet.

Not to mention Castaway Cay - where we know sharks have gotten through the shark net - and barracuda do all the time.

The netting is going up today, photos have been shared of it at the Polynesian.

Maybe they don't need to cement it in if it's deep enough. I will admit that I am not a beach fence expert (or an expert on any type of fencing for that matter :) )

The netting looks really heavy, so like you I would think they would have needed some support to the posts.

A friend sent me news blurb of a man getting bit on foot by shark while floating in Ocean at Myrtle Beach this week.

We leave this weekend. :cloud9: I have zero intention of staying out of the water unless the lifeguards post it. Ala Jaws lol they wouldn't let us swim with scary creatures in the water, would they?

Seriously, I have a better chance of getting hit with car trying to cross the main drag there.
