Its Official
The dates have been extended. Of course its always smart to get one NOW.
United States (Security Rating: 2) U.S. State Department Releases Revised Passport Requirement Deadlines: The U.S. State Department released new passport requirement deadlines Sept. 1. The deadlines are part of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative mandated by the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004. The proposed deadlines for U.S. citizens and foreign nationals are now:
Dec. 31, 2006 - Documents would be required for all air and sea travel to or from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean and Bermuda.
Dec. 31, 2007 - Documents would be required for travel across all U.S. land borders.
iJET Analysis:
The new deadlines have been formally submitted for public comment by the department. To comment, access the Federal e-Rulemaking Portal at www.regulations.gov and follow the instructions for submitting comments. The original passport deadline for all travel (air/sea) to or from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Central and South America was Dec. 31, 2005 but it was reconsidered after strong objections from numerous sources and after U.S. President George W. Bush requested a review. A passport is the desired document of choice and iJET recommends travelers use a passport for all international travel regardless of prevailing documentation requirements. A matrix of other documents currently accepted and being considered for the new travel initiative is available from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Web site: http://cbp.gov/linkhandler/cgov/tra...atrix.doc.Other forms of secure documentation may be developed as the deadline approaches. All documents must establish the citizenship and identity of the bearer and include significant security features. Ultimately, all documents used for travel to the U.S. are expected to include biometrics that can be used to authenticate the document and verify identity.
