Yes- they guaranteed our connecting rooms also.

Now, does anyone know if they are more apt to say no to a Starwood upgrade request if you have connecting rooms? I kinda figured if they have connecting rooms set aside for you, they may not be able to find two more connecting rooms on the fly! We have standard rooms, but I'd love some kind of view, or (dare I dream it!) a balcony.

I know . . . greedy, greedy!
Blondie's response is GREAT! But--the upgrade only depends upon hotel availability (how many are reserved in which rooms/categories, etc). Therefore, the connecting rooms will not have any adverse affect or lesson your chance for an upgrade in any manner. ;)

Do you think I should call them and tell them about my memberships and maybe they will upgrade us to the king room on the first night?
Absolutely! Reservation and front office associates would prefer to have you in the same room anyway for the length of your stay, as it lessons their work (prevents the changes they must make in the system...etc, when more than one reservation is involved with one person/stay).

If you call in advance, they may be more inclined to just upgrade you right then. If not--they will certainly tell you, and then you may check-again when you arrive (and they may possibly do it right then!!). Either way, it's a total waste if you fail to ask. The only thing you risk by asking, is someone saying no, and then you are no worse off that you are presently! :confused3 Nothing ventured, nothing gained. GO FOR IT...and please let us know how it goes! :goodvibes

Like Disneycrazymom...I am PSPG (plat), and the upgrades and perks are nearly automatic (even though they attest otherwise). I receive suite upgrades worldwide, free spa treatments, extra points, and other perks including a selection of amenities upon check-in. I have even received free Valet parking for the duration of my stay at the Dolphin. If you ask, they sometimes "waive" parking if you are only using it for a night/two in the regular lot (my friends recently asked--and this was obliged). Perhaps that also depends on hotel and parking lot capacity, etc. They are super-kind to all of us, and treat us wonderfully.

On the same note, we are platinum Loews, and although we always reserve large suites at the Portofino hotel (and other Loews props), we receive a fraction of the perks (as we do at the Dolphin). They are getting much better, and offered us numerous amenities last stay (including a "managers treat" each day which consisted of things such as English toffee hand dipped in chocolate/nuts, and a tray with cookies, beverages, etc. sent to the suite. The second evening, we received a pizza (margarita and some cold pasta salad), along with cookies and chocolates sent to the suite in the early evening. The surprises were really nice. Even though Club level accompanied this suite (and included alcohol as well--which was very nice too), it was nice to receive such treats.

Blondie...I love the description of the view, including the people riding the ride on Mt. Everest!! Wow..never knew you could see such details with clarity (w/zoom that's fully understandable!). I LOVE the views too...and would be pleased with any location at these resorts! :cloud9:

m_kasch--as for the amex cc, it's all we use for these reservations. The points vary, but can be found on the website. www.spg.com

Enjoy!!! :thumbsup2

Only 10 more days til my first Dolphin stay! I keep looking at pictures of the grotto pool and getting so excited and happy.

I have a quick question...I have not even stayed there yet, but I am trying to get our family WDW trip in Sept reserved. I wanted to rent BCV points for Sept 28 (Fri) to Oct 2 (checking out on a Tuesday.) However, I am anticipating that I will love the Dolphin. I see there are still some deep discounts available for my dates...value season ends Sept 29. If I book for Sept 28, will I get that lower rate (value) for my entire stay?

Also, do you think I should try to book it while there...that maybe a deeper discount will be available if I do it in person, kind of like the bounceback program WDW has had?

Anyone have any luck with the MAW envelopes? Are they still doing this? I hope so!

Thanks for your help!

DH and I will be arriving at the Dolphin either the night before or on thanksgiving. I am thinking of signing up for the SPG Amex card to get points to use. I was wondering if anyone can tell me how the points work regarding free nights or upgrades? I know that it is 10,000 points for a free night, but what about upgrades? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!! :goodvibes

We've had the SPG Amex Card for several years, pretty much have the attitude that if we can't pay with it we don't buy (not sound to sound like snobs) but the points are a big deal for us. We've stayed in Seattle at the Sheraton and Westin many times either on full points or on Cash & Points. If you check around before you sign up, maybe on their website you can earn a pretty good chunk of points something like 5,000 or 10,000 points. On our last trip to the Dolphin we used the points to upgrade our room to view with balcony - which was nice. Looking back maybe we should have just stuck with the free nights. On our December trip we'll have 7 of the 8 nights totally paid for by points - gotta love staying for free. The staff at the S/D have always been helpful when my DW has called, they can explain all the details about upgrades etc. The SPG website is also very helpful.

. If I book for Sept 28, will I get that lower rate (value) for my entire stay?
Congrats on your first stay (upcoming) at the Dolphin, and your 10th wedding anni too!!

YES--you will receive the discount the entire length of your stay (be sure to confirm this at the front desk upon check-in, but I've never been denied such a discount before--and have used this at several other properties under Starwood).

I'm not sure of the MAW envelopes, but know others may be able to help you there. I certainly read of a LOT of folks receiving some awesome prizes from dinners and spa treatments to comped eves!! Check with the front desk before you arrive and ask about this program/promo. You will surely love the Dolphin, and will not wish to change or move to any other property once you are settled into your room. Enjoy!! Hope this helps a little. :cloud9: :wizard:

STEVE---I love your attitude, and pretty much embrace the same philosophy. If we can't use the AMEX card--we don't shop there (another reason we never visit Sam's club, but LIVE-AT Costco!!). :thumbsup2 Some of the BEST deals using points, points and cash, and other specials (usually with the buy two eves, get one free---or buy three eves, get two free) can be found only on the websites!! Everyone interested in traveling via Starwood, should check the website from time to time, and look at all the specials.

Sometimes, the points are reduced (for free or upgrades), and other times BONUS points are being offered during certain time periods for stays. We have accumulated hundreds of thousands of points, and when I convert them to the many partners available through their symbiotic network---for every 20K converted, I receive an EXTRA bonus of 5K as a perk!! This program just can't be beat. It's the best, without a doubt. I recently filled out a small survey and met with a specialist in London (about travels, etc) while staying in a top property. They "gifted" me with 20,000 points for my time, as well as a complimentary massage and room-service dinner!! How much nicer can it get? I say, bring on the surveys...I'll fill one out every week for some SPG points! Also, you may purchase points on the SPG site if you are short some for a desired reservation/plan, up to a generous number per account annually.

No wonder it tops the Freddie Mac awards year after year. As a platinum member, I LOVE Starwood and all the phenomenal perks which accompany this company. Hope you all enjoy your stays as much as we do...and enjoy the incredible WIN-WIN (WDW and POINTS!!!) situation for staying at these two fine resorts located in the heart of Walt Disney World. :wizard: :goodvibes

Thank you Dreamflight! I think we will do the MAW envelopes...I mean, hey, it is for a good cause! I will report back after the trip.

9 more sleeps!:cheer2:

Okay...you all convinced me to sign up for the card!! Now I can start getting points to get upgraded at the Dolphin!! :cool1:

Thank you for all the info!!

Have you checked the S/D discount thread? It will list all dates with discounts still available. If you have AAA, etc there are many you might qualify for. Renting DVC points for Fri/Sat nights are twice the cost of Sun-Thurs; also Food & Wine Festival makes Epcot DVC's hard to book at this point. Just a few things to consider.

Thanks for the reply!:cool1: If I can get BCV for $10 a point (which is what I have been paying at BWV the past two years) it will be $680 for the 4 night stay, including the weekends. That's why it will depend on the Dolphin discounts whether I go with BCV or not. I have been over on the rent/trade boards daily...there is stuff available for F&W Fest/Epcot DVC resorts, just not for my dates.

Yes, I have been to the S/D discount thread...that's where I saw that the 28th is value season, and the 29th starts the more expensive season (can't remember what it is called right now.) I am AAA and a FL res, that's how I got the Dolphin for $159 for this upcoming trip. If I can get a rate anywhere near that, I may book the Dolphin, but then there are taxes and parking fees....so BCV point renting still comes out cheaper, plus will have a kitchenette, free valet parking and SAB. My goal is to stay at every WDW resort at least once in my lifetime, so that's another reason to go with BCV if I can!

I was just wondering if anyone thought booking in person would get me a better deal. I know the answer is probably "no" but maybe I could charm them? LOL.:rotfl:

I volunteer at DD's school once a week, and the kids were driving me NUTS today!:scared: I just kept thinking how DH and I will be lounging by the Grotto Pool 9 days. I have been looking at the BZ menu daily. V&A's called today to confirm our ADR, ask if we have any food allergies and make sure the spellings of our names are correct for our personalized menus.:goodvibes

I would book something at S/D just to be sure. You might luck out on finding a rental closer to your travel dates (30 days out-when someone has to rent a trip they can no longer take or risks losing the points). You can cancel S/D reservations up to 3 days out without penalty. It sounds like you know you will be at WDW that weekend regardless of where you end up staying.
V&A sounds great! I did not know they made up personalized menus. One of the many WDW experiences I have yet to enjoy.....:cutie:

Well, Jeankeri...I took your advice. :thumbsup2 Just for the heck of it, I called The Dolphin and asked about rates. I got $159 a night, FL res rate!:yay: :yay: :yay: I am pretty darn happy with that. It will be $715 for the four nights (that's with tax and charges) and then $36 for parking. I will still keep my eys peeled for BCV rental like you said.

I will give a full report of V&A's (although probably not as thorough as many of the dining reviews on this board...my DH already warned me if I even THINK about taking pictures of food he is going die of embarrassment.):guilty:

My boys are too young to appreciate V&A, so I would love to hear what you thought of it. As for the photos, believe me, you could do nothing more embarrassing than my friend did when we were in college. She was so psyched that we went on this double date when we were in Miami (couldn't believe they asked- have to admit they were pretty smokin') that she pulled out her camera right in the middle of the restaurant. She said there was no way she would go through the rest of her life without photo proof of her date that night. So, I say focus in on that entree without a second thought! Theres no knowing what your other diner's past history with 'dinner photos 'is! ;)

We are planning to stay at the Dolphin or Swan in November 2007. I've been reading this post, and my head is spinning. Which do you recommend staying in? We are SPG Gold owners, and don't like staying in standard rooms. We'll also be using our points for a free week. Also, which is the best area for a view? I'll be traveling with my DW41 and DS6. Any suggestions would be great. At this point, I'm so confused. Thanks! :goodvibes

Since we'll be heading for the Dolphin fairly soon, please tell me "What are MAW envelopes?"
We have also been upgraded a few times and truly enjoyed it. Our favorite room is on the 11th floor, right in the middle. It enables us to watch Illuminations and not have to brave the crowds!!:thumbsup2
A really nice plus - for the time we'll be there- the DIS rate is $149. Caroline

"Make A Wish" Foundation is sponsoring a fundraiser with the Swan & Dolphin - for a certain amount of a donation you will receive an envelope that may contain a prize of an upgrade, free spa treatment, things like that... There was a link, but of course I can't locate it now! ;)

lovingthemouse-Yes...apparently if you donate $20 to MAW...I *think* they present you with 3 envelopes that each have a different prize in them. The prizes vary, and some of them are very simple, but again...some are awesome, and it is all for a good cause anyway.:goodvibes

What dates are you going and tell me more about the "DIS" rate? I would love to know for future reference! Thanks! I wish my trips would coincide with the $125 rate they have been offering, but alas, none of my dates match up!:sad2:

jeankeri-LOL about your friend! Good for her! I am awful about taking pictures, but then regret later that I have no memories of whatever event. I do know that if we get coffee at V&A's, i *WILL* get a pic of us with that crazy coffee contraption...have you ever seen it? Kind of looks like a bong? Not that I have ever seen one of those....:hippie:

Hi Dan!!!:)

WLL - we will be there over an extended Memorial Day weekend, between the teacher discount and DIS rate, which was offered a few weeks back, we got a rate of $149. I am pretty persistent about calling the Dolphin 800 number and asking for discount rates (Friday afternoon is a great time since cancelled rooms go back into the computers).

Thank yo for the information on ther MAW envelopes. Are there envelopes at the front desk or do we need to get them before leaving home? Thanks for any responses. Caroline

WE went to the Dolphin for a conference for DH's work and we got to go to a wonderful party in the suite

EMPEROR'S PRESIDENTIAL SUITE

It was totally great our friends got to stay there and it was wonderful.....
