First year going as a DVC member, finally bit the bullet last year! Question about dining/tickets; are there discounts that apply to us? We have already booked our stay at Poly for our May trip, I was waiting to see if there would be any dining and/or ticket packages that came out that would apply to us. Are there typically? TIA!

Congratulations! I hope you enjoy DVC as much as we have for the past 16+ years!

There is also DVC pricing for AP's log onto the DVC site to see pricing.

You can purchase Dining Plan but there is no "free" dining since "free dining" is tied to hotel room packages. There are Dining discounts at certain restaurants and shopping discounts.I would recommend going to the following link. https://disneyvacationclub.disney.go.com/discounts-perks-offers/

There are definitely discounts that apply. With your DVC Membership Card, you can get discounts at certain restaurants.

You can also purchase a Tables In Wonderland Card for about $150 (a $25 discount from the normal price of $175) that will get you a 20% discount on Food and Beverage in certain restaurants.

See this thread for details. http://www.disboards.com/threads/dining-discounts-and-plans-for-dvc-members.3436646/#post-54195561

For a May trip, you can make Advance Dining Reservations 180 days in advance, meaning that you are already within the window. Go ahead and make the reservations. You get the discount at the restaurant. For restaurants that you have to prepay, you get the discount refunded to the credit card that you used for the pre-payment. (e.g. Cinderella's Royal Table)

You might also have some blackout dates with the TIW card or the DVC membership. Sometimes the DVC discounts are only for lunch or specific days.

It looks like your questions have been answered, so I just wanted to jump in and say on your DVC purchase!

What is the discount for tickets this year? I can't see through the link as our contract is still in ROFR. Newbie soon to be DVC!!

I just passed ROFR, I've see that the Ticket deal expires on 3/31, so it's unlikely that you or I will have member numbers in time to benefit from that special. Buy your tickets from undercover tourist, unless u plan to buy the annual pass, for that I'd wait until I have my member number

I think DVC members can get a 10% discount on TS meals in some restaurants. Not sure which ones though.

we just bought DVC (actually re-sale just before they changed the rules...that was close) if we get the 10-20% discount at certain restaurants for being DVC memebers, is there enough incentive to purchase TIW? DW has said that we would have to $700 on food for the TIW recoup our expense.

The DVC discounts are less and fewer. I haven't checked in a while, but it's around 30 restaurants that offer a 10% discount for DVC, while 100 restaurants offer a 20% discount with the TiW card. The break-even will depend on your specific meals, but it's probably around $900.

Also, the DVC discount only covers four people, while the TiW covers ten people. Keep in mind that the TiW card will be valid for 13 to 14 months.

Obviously, the more people with you, the more meals you eat, and the more times you visit, the easier it is to justify the TiW expense.

You'll have to spend $750 with TIW to recover the cost of the card. It's not that difficult if you travel with more than 4 people. Also remember that TIW is good for alcohol as well which adds up quickly.

Most people aren't going to want to think about it too much and would rather know they are getting the biggest discount (TIW), but In reality, you need to spend more than $750 to make it worth it because you can already get a 10% discount at many of the restaurants for DVC and AP (if you have them). Those are "free" 10% discounts (it is a perk for buying something you would have bought/used anyway) and should be counted when you decide to bypass them to use TIW (meaning you really are only getting 10% more for the %150 you paid...

regardless, her is a nice PDF I found that breaks all the discounts down. They also menioin that some places take AAA. Never though of that.

Yeah that is pretty much what I was figuring. we used TIW once when it was just the two of us and we got our money's worth but we spent more money than we normally do on food that trip just to get to the break even point. When we go with friends I think TIW is definitely worth it though. It's a shame the DVC discount only applies to so few places, if it was valid at the gurgling suitcase we could save a ton of money! But seriously, no DVC discount at the first DVC?

Alisonslp thanks for the allears pdf, that is quite a nice tool there. However, I think the rule of thumb will be to always ask what discounts they offer. I was kind of surprised I use allears all the time and I never saw that chart.

That was for a particular ticket deal. DVC members can buy the gold and platinum annual passes at a discount. The biggest difference is the gold pass comes with black out dates around spring break and Christmas. Once you have your member number, go online to the DVCMember site and look up perks.

It depends on how much you are going to spend. I did the math and just for the three of us it wasn't worth it. We are only eating in like 5 restaurants that accepts TiW, so even if we spent $250 per meal pre tax, which is what they base the discount on (a total of $1250 for all five meals), we'd be getting a $250 discount. Subtract the cost of the plan ($150) and that gives us a total savings of $100. I can get $125 total savings at those same places just using my 10% DVC discount. Of course if you are eating in more places, staying longer and/or have more than 3 people in your party, TiW could work for you.

Similar to the annual pass, if you fit two trips in per year TiW is more likely to work for you. (in the past TiW has also been good for 13-14 months rather than a year, but it's not clear that will continue) For us, a party of 6 who tries to eat two TS meals per day and goes twice within a 12 month period, it's a no-brainer.

As noted, it depends. When comparing the DP to TIW to OOP including other discounts; I'd say just look at the menus and see what a meal would cost you at the places you frequent. To make up the difference for TIW you need volume at applicable options. For the DP to be worth it one needs applicable choices, often it's the same or more than OOP. Just to do it as a budgeting tool is a poor choice due to the risk involved, I normally suggest it give you 20% savings and/or 20% additional value. There are calculators out there that will help with these decisions.

My rule of thumb is to always, always, always carry my DVC card with me and ask the person collecting money (waiter / waitress / cashier) at any place I spend cash if they give a discount to DVC. More often than not it seems they may have one even if it's not published. If not, they will be honest with you, but will never be mad at you asking.

if they have one, it's usually 10%.

Note I am also a Disney Visa Holder. Places that don't accept one sometimes accept the other. Between the both, I usually get 10% off. Just carry anything that applies to a discount, and always ask. The worst thing is they have to tell you no.
