OK - while you are paging thru your Ent Bks looking for that page - did you guys read this from your wdwinfo email? It's beautiful and yes, I shamelessly admit - totally off topic.

The Meaning of Doing "Nothing"
By Chaplain (MAJ) Carlos C. Huerta
1st Battalion, 320th Field Artillery
101st Airborne Division
Mosul (Nineveh), Iraq

We just sit here doing nothing. We waste our time all day sitting around doing nothing. We get up at 0’Dark:30 in the morning after going to bed at O’Dark:29 and run around in the dark doing PT and are tired all the time. We don’t eat what we want and we never get enough good food. The weather is hot, unbearable, and we sweat all the time. On top of this, we don’t fit in. Some of the people here hate us, they want us to go, and they tell us we don’t belong.

The worst is we are lonely, lonely, and lonely. There is nobody to talk to that understands how we really feel, nobody to listen, nobody that we love. Everyone we care about is so far away. It seems as if they are on another planet, another world away. We almost never get to talk to them, the phone connection costs and quality is inconsistent, almost no e-mail, and snail mail takes weeks. So many of us, I included, left young or unborn children at home who will be walking and/or talking by the time we get back and won’t even know whom their father or mother is. We go to bed at night in the dark, thinking we cannot make it another day. We wake up in the morning knowing we can’t go on, but somehow we do. Why? Because we are American soldiers, and because of words like Duty-Honor-Country.

We don’t like being here but we know that the ‘nothing’ we do here is important. Who wants to leave their family, children, loved ones and watch them live a separate life without them? Who wants to have a baby, then watch it grow up from thousands of miles away? None of us want it, but we do it nevertheless.

If you ask why, it would be to do ‘nothing’. ‘Nothing’ like getting up before sunrise, that is, those of us that is not standing guard all night making sure our buddies sleep safely. ‘Nothing’ like checking our weapons, checking our ammo, and saddling up with our battle rattle (Kevlar, body armor, web gear) to move out to do different missions.

Some of us do ‘nothing’ by standing guard on gas lines that go on for 500 plus cars, keeping order. Some of us run TCPs (Traffic Control Points) where we randomly check cars for weapons, explosives, or bad guys. Some of us stand in front of banks guarding payrolls for teachers, retirees, government workers. Some of us organize propane runs to neighborhoods ensuring that all homes in the city have enough cooking fuel for their families. Some of us supervise school construction projects, water construction projects, guard electrical utilities, grain factories, and fuel depots.

Some of us do ‘nothing’ by going to neighborhood health clinics, ensuring that the clinics are up and running and that there are enough medical supplies for the sick. Some of us start the day at O’Dark:30 and run firing ranges, teach in classrooms, run field drills, help establish and run Iraqi military in-processing stations to train and stand up a national army so we can go home to our loved ones. Some of us do ‘nothing’ by finding mass graves filled with the bodies of other people’s love ones, innocent men, women, and children, shot execution style in the back of the head, while some of us engage those that filled those graves in intensive fire-fights.

We do all this in the hot sun, dressed in full combat gear in temperatures that exceed 110 F, while getting shot at. Why? Because if we don’t nobody will. If we don’t then this Country will descend in chaos. If we don’t then children, like the ones we left behind, will go hungry. If we don’t then many innocent men, women and children will die to disease, hunger, or violence. We do it because it needs to be done, because if we don’t fix this thing the right way then it will be our children we will have to send over here to fix it. We do it because Duty-Honor-Country, because we are American soldiers.

Yes, we prefer NOT doing ‘nothing’ here, but as the old WW1 song goes, "..we won’t be back, till it’s over, over there..." So to our families, we say, we love you, we miss you terribly, but we, you and us as a team, are affecting the world for good. You hang in there and help us to hang in there, because we can’t do this without you being there for us. We will come home. We want to come home, but we have to come home the right way.

We may wonder if it is worth it. If we hold value to the smile on a grateful child’s face because now he or she has running water at school where before they didn’t, then it is worth it. If we hold value to the tears coming down a mother’s face because some newly acquired medicine just saved the life of her child, then it is worth it.

If we hold value to fundamentally changing a dictatorial society to a democratic one and giving people their lives back, then it is worth it. If we hold value to our wives, children, and loved ones living in peace at home, free from the fear of terror attack, then it is worth it. The pay isn’t much, the hours are long, the food sucks, but the satisfaction is high because we sense in the depth of our souls that here, in Iraq, in this ancient land where the Bible began, that the ‘nothing’ we are doing is truly God’s own work.

PS Mom P - love the Xmas photo

MUFFY~ARE you SURE ABOUT the Suite? They only have about "5" Portofino Suites, and usually never "upgrade" to these. There are "lots" of other suites, as I've stayed in them...but the premier "portofinos" are rare and pricey! I'll give them a call to check, as I always have to PAY oodles to stay in mine! I'm platinum Loews too, and they have always offered a "one class" upgrade (as SPG does) to either a deluxe room with a view or a suite (used to be a $35 charge for the suite). Yet, these suites are very small, still two rooms...but one is a tiny room with a sofa/table and T.V.
The Portofino suite has a Butler pantry, and is massive and spread-out. I'll be estactic if I can get it for $189.00 per eve. It normally rents for $685.00 and up!! Post any further details on this for me! :hyper:

DF, Yes, I'm sure, LOL! We have been upgraded to a Portofino Parlor Suite. The Suite you are discribing sounds like the Villa Suite. The Portofino Parlor Suite is 850 sq. feet. It does not have a butlers pantry. It is 2 rooms and looks and sounds devine. I do have a written confirmation of this suite. The folks on the universal board provided me with a link to see all of PBH suites. If you go to www.loewshotels.com and click on "loews first" you will see that they have changed as of June 2003. Platinum Loews now get a FREE upgrade to a suite gauranteed at the time of reservation. I made my reservation through Loews 1 800 LOEWS12 months ago. I DID NOT have any luck calling Universal directly 1 800 BEASTAR. It's a GREAT benifit upgrade to Platinum Loews members! Can't wait for the fun to start! what a great time of year!

Loews must have had great success with the FREE upgrades they offered last year (For PLAT members). YES...I'm in the Portofino VILLA suite overlooking the bay! In fact, these are the only suites with Balconies which overlook the bay (top floor of the wing). My suite is visible in the photo~(Tallest roofline with the three covered arches, and the two balconies to the right under one long roof which comprises the bedroom, dining room and formal living room, respectively):

I've stayed in the Portofino Parlor suite, and hope you enjoy it. I've also sojourned in the Hospitality suite, which had a piano in the formal (but lacked the view of my Villa Suite). We enjoyed a kids suite too, (with DD when younger), one overlooking the bay, and one overlooking the "forest" (as she called it!). All the rooms at this property are heavenly, the beds are incredible and the service is TOP RATE. It's the crown Jewel of the Loews properties!

Well...the plat. Loews upgrade is wonderful news, especially FREE. ::yes:: It's comparable to the SPG prog, which will upgrade PLAT. members to a deluxe room/Jr. Suite (when/if avail), but not any higher (@comp). So my Exec. suite is not included in the upgrade~! (LOL)

Just like everything I ever want/need is NEVER on sale!! :headache:

WOW..."J"~That was a revelation! Thank you, for the humble "grounding" (I needed that!). We have MUCH to be thankful for at this (and every) time of year. Perspective...is a blessing. :goodvibes

^_^ Hello...to all my "sisters" in the room.

TTFN....DF99 :wave2:

Awesome Photo! Pardon Me While I Cry!!!!

BTW - my younger sister had her first DD yesterday - Sophie

A massive 9.06 and 21 inches. (My sister is 5'2")

Kinda tough ride, but we are all happy and healthy!!!

DF, your suite looks fab. PBH now has club level. It is something new, just opened last month. I will let you know in a couple of weeks if we get a bay view! I have requested it along with west wing. The excitment is building

Robmax, CONGRATULATIONS! How great for your family to have a new member just in time for Christmas!

:cool1: Congratulations, Uncle RobMax!

Muffy~ your countdown clock looks mighty good :teeth: ! 15 nights at the Dolphin--- a dream come true! And, your PBH stay sounds wonderful, too.

Well, another snow day for me -- the community my school is located in was really snowed in - about 3 feet! We should be back tomorrow - I hope! I don't like adding days on in June. :(

*waving to all*
I second that great countdown clock, Muffy!

Congrats Rob!

Mouseteacher>> NO snow here in the land of snow... just rain! You guys were dumped on! Enjoy the break while you can!

Jgates>> I saw that post.... I am glad you reposted.

Ozzie> Happy belated birthday!

Disbug>> I am laughing over the ix nay line! You're doing a great job! THANK YOU!

I am still trying to get through piles of email. Sorority wave to all!

Evening folks - anyone find that coupon in the Entertainment Book yet?

Nothing exciting here - ice and about 3 inches of snow. Driving home on the ice covered road and the buck tried to jump in front of me. AGH!!!!! But I got it stopped and he spooked backwards towards the woods again. I HATE WINTER.

9 lbs Uncle RM? WOW~!!!!!!! (and ouch!)

I don't have a current Entertainment book (I know, gasp!) or I would let ya know... it is rather frustrating sometimes when you have gotten good deals in the past and can't find them again for the same properties! But, not to worry.... I always find something better pops up! Just be on the lookout!

It looks like I will be trading in my 7 nights at AKL for 7 nights at the Dolphin. We got a great rate ($99 4 nights, $139 2 nights, $183 1 night) saving us $185 *and* we will earn a free weekend night at the Sheraton Kauai in April (a $199 value).

Anyway ... my DH is Plat and we were already upgraded to the Club Level according to www.spg.com. I read that the Dolphin is renovating rooms to have Heavenly Beds and that the Club Level is not yet done. Bummer :(. I would really like to have a renovated suite. If we get a suite or a renovated room on a floor other than the Club Level will we still have access to the lounge for breakfast/snacks?

Thanks!

Well, I swam over to the Budget Board and the response I got there was it is no longer in its own page in the center by the regular Universal discounts. (I know it was once!!) It is now just listed in the back under 'gtd best rate for your date' or something like that. It seems strange then that the one nite would have a cheaper AAA rate!!!

Man, doesn't someone work at Loew's? I'll adopt you for a few weeks to get a family discount!!!!

I called Swan to day and was told that the room that I booked using 44,000 pts (5 nights) for 12/28-1/2 is NOT on the club level, but they gave me club privilege (I paid extra pts for it though, 1,000 pts extra per night). I was told that I have a studio with a king plus a pull out sofa.

Is this a better room than a regular king? I also have a reservation for a room for 2 queen paying $129 per night. Is using th pts worth it in this case?

Also, if we are not on the club floor, what are the best room requests we should be making? We have 3 rooms reserved and I would like to have 2 that are connecting. Right now, all three should have a balcony with a lake view.

Thanks for any advice you can provide.:D

robinb ~ We have heard conflicting reports on if you can stay on another floor and still have club access. It has been done in the past without a problem, but recently we have heard they are cracking down and only allowing access to the club lounge while staying on club floors. I am also platinum SPG and was upgraded to a jr. suite on our last stay. Wherever your room is you will have a great time. The club lounge is great and the location of the Dolphin cannot be beat. :)

lat ~ The best rooms to view the fireworks at Epcot are the rooms up high on the far east wing. The only other suggestion is you might ask for a corner king, you get 2 balconies this way. I personally think the rate of 129 is not worth using the points needed to get the room for free. I have used cash and points before and to me it was worth it for 60$ a night. The cash and points promotion has been extended unitl January so you might want to check and see if your nights are available.

 Good Morning to the room

KLEENEX ALERT:
The Swan and Dolphin have pulled out of the cash and point promotion as of Jan 1. Sad, sad news. All I can say is MAYBE they will participate again at another time? According to www.flyertalk.com several Starwood properties have pulled out of the cash and point promo. I have used the promotion before and it was a great use of points, to say the least!

I still think the S/D is a great deluxe for the $$$. It is in the center of the magic and has atmosphere galore. We can still use our points for free nights, upgrades, etc.

Long live the Swan and Dolphin!

Muffy

I'll be honest.... SPG is getting a bit stingy!

They upped the Plat level to 50+ stays a year, are limiting govt/teacher rate date, and cutting out the points/$'s deal now....

More and more it is sounding like the PolyGC is the place to stay if they make the price right.

They had CL the initial year they opened, and even BUTLERS for the Villas, and Hosp. Suites! But, they quickly "nixed" this perk after year one. They always talked of offering this again in the Concierge lounge (downstairs just off the lobby, with the big screen T.V., pool tables & plush seating, concierge desk, full bar, and rental car desk. This is where it was initially offered. It was an ASTOUNDING CL...with incredible offerings! I "pray" it is the same!! I can hardly wait to read your post upon your return. ENJOY!!

P.S. When you check~in, just for the "heck" of it....ASK if there's ANY CHANCE you could be upgraded to the VILLA SUITES on the TOP FLOOR (if one is vacant, etc.). Remember...IT NEVER HURTS TO ASK!! Here's some PD for you..*********************:sunny:

Rob Max~Here's a Kleenex!
...UNCLE!!! Congratulations on the NEW ADDITION to the family! Love the name, too. ::yes::

#1hockeymom~We too...have ONLY rain! I would opt for SNOW anyday, where at least I could make snow angels and toss snowballs!

jgates~I've had the book since it was released, what coupon code do you need? I'll PM you and send it asap...just let me know. They are still running the "4th night free" promo. Are you interested in that one?

robinb~did you write SHERATON KAUAI?!? Oh, it's one of my FAVS, next to the Maui Westin! :goodvibes PLAT. SPG can easily opt for a room on any floor and receive CL privs. Just call and inquire, or wait until you arrive. This option, as MOM POPPINS wrote, is being removed from all other reservations. It makes it a little easier for the Concierge to control the people "in & out" of the lounge. Glad you switched ressies (great $aving$ too). Enjoy your stay!

lat~It all depends on WHAT you need. The studio you described is the PARLOR of a Suite. Most likely, either a Jr. or a 2 & 1/2 Bay. These are quite comfy, and will accomodate four very comfortably. You are using too many PTS. for this promo! UGH....44,000 points will get you 54,000 SKYMILES on DELTA AIRLINES! (Conversion rate & special=5,000 FREE with every 20,000 converted). It takes 40,000 Skymiles for a FREE RT "FIRST CLASS" airline ticket, valued between $2-3,000 (depending on destination), and the 50,000 will get you TWO FREE COACH TICKETS! 5 eves @ the promo rate will cost roughly $850.00. I would opt to PAY CASH for the room, and save the Points.

The points and cash option is much better. Since you can use it until Jan, it's a great feature to check-out. The "CORNER KING WITH TURRET" is a fabulous room (As MOM POPPINS suggested), and offers the best views, etc. Definitely ask for the FAR EAST WING, UPPER FLOOR (Unobstructed view~as some have palms blocking part of the view). The views of Epcot (including illuminations), and all the Epcot resorts is breathtaking! Corner Kings are not connecting rooms, but all have Balconies. The rooms adjacent to these connect with one another. ;)

MOM POPPINS~Robin, just checking to see if the Nurse ever tested? Also, be sure to take Pics of the "Prince & Princesses" during Breakfast in the Castle! How long has it been since you were last at WDW? Did you cancel your last trip due to the impending arrival of B. Kirk? You MUST be getting excited, as the countdown clock is peeling away! (Have you made your list and begun to set aside things for the stay?). It's the FIRST visit for the little prince. He'll be mesmerized by all the sights, surely!

Hi gang....just checking in again..We have had terrible flooding here to day...my basement is really wet and I refuse to go down the steps...( I know I can't hold out all day....but it's sooo much work....)The play roo rug is soaked...as is the floor in the dark room and my laundry area.....

Good thing I have a few more days to pack...

Muffy ...the exec suites are 20,000 points....3 of us got flu shots but the family has come down with colds, sore throats and sinus infections ....but all before the trip...so keep the fingers crossed it all passes in the next few days....

Yes, CL at PBH is reported to be the best around. The Portofino Suite we have booked looks fantastic! I will be posting pictures from PBH of this suite! Bringing my laptop too! It goes for over 500.00 per night! I really have to give credit to Loews to upgrade Plats at the time of reservation to a suite! In view of all the cutbacks this is a very nice perk! I will defiantly be staying at Loews in the future as well as my ol' favorites at WDW! Getting closer!

:wave2:

Just popping in to wish every one a safe and healthy holiday season!! I thought I was making a spur of the moment trip to the S/D over the MLK weekend, but it's sold out...waaaaah! good airfare, annual passes, and no S/D. boo hiss! I know AP rates are out, so I might try that, but I was sure looking forward to that Heavenly Bed.....

Madge

Clarification needed for lat - staying at the Swan I believe lat posted. I don't think the Swan has the King turret rooms.

I had the King Jr. Suite with sofa bed and balcony at the Swan. We were in the east wing 6th floor - the room was at the very end so we had three windows facing 2 sides besides the balcony doors. Our views were lovely - not of a park but of the Dolphin and the lake and much more. I loved this room particularly at night on the balcony with the Dolphin all lit up.

If you look at the Swan picture above, the wing on the left is the east wing. Our room faced the inner part / over the walkway that connects the S to the D. It was the last balcony on the outer end of the wing.

:wave2: Hi, madge - good to hear from you. Sorry about the unavailability of the S/D.
