NEW...DOLPHIN/SWAN..."questions and answers"...tips and hints!

We've been back almost a week, but then went on a long weekend trip right after and just got a chance to post today. Been gone from work almost two weeks, so things have piled up. I'd like to do a trip report, but I know I won't have the time. But since everyone was so helpful in my planning our trip I thought I should at leasrt post some quick observations:

We're very glad we picked the Swan. With the teacher rate we were able to get two rooms; with SPG points we upgraded to CL; got connecting rooms with MGM view (1257 and 1258 if I remember right). A great view of the waterway to MGM; could see the Fantasmic area (but we were always out), ToT, Boarwalk, some of Epcot.

CL was great, but in my opinion not worth it if paying with money instead of points. I think they should either make it cheaper or extend the hours. CL was busy, but not overly crowded. (By the way, make sure you ask for water to bring to the parks in the mornig - they don't have it out but they gladly will give you several bottles. They are 8 oz size now.)

Mama T was great, as everyone said. I found out that her name is Teresa, and people called her Mother Teresa, or Mama T for short. I'm sure most people knew that, but I don't recall reading that here.

The parks were very crowded - I guess due to FTP and getting close to the beginning of school. Also there were some large conventions, but that didn't make the hotel seem overly crowded.

We did E-night on 8/5, and they unexpectedly extended closing of MK to 11:00; so the e-ride night went from 11-2AM. We left by 1:30 - missed the Kiss Goodnight (this was our only trip to MK); the waits were kind of long in the beginning but very short to non-existant by midnight.

We found the sensor A/C situation to be a non-issue. We never got warm at night due to no motion in the room.

Mama T was nice enough to open the very large suite in the middle of floor 12 for us to see. Two bedrooms, a piano, full kitchen, a couple of balconies. She said it is going to be renovated (don't see that it needs it ) and goes for $2000 a night. Several celebrities have stayed there, as well as CEOs.

Downside to the Swan - lack of a lounge to sit and talk and have a drink. The lobby lounge is just that - tables in a lobby with a bar to the side. Shula's lounge is great, but you have to walk a bit to get there.

Also - the grotto pool is a bit further of a walk than you might expect. However, it's probably the second best pool (after Sormalong Bay); given how relatively empty it is, it may even be better overall.

Upside - price, location, views, service. It seemed better suited to our family, since our kids are older (16, 18, 22). But in all honesty, I would not put it in the same price category as GF or BC/YC. Still, it is by no means a moderate. It is deluxe and full service (a great variety of dining choices as an example). I would recommend it to anyone - but not at rack rate. Let's say BC is $300 per night - I'd say Swan/Dolphin is worth at least $200 and probably more.

Park wise - we did all four plus Universal / IOA. Never needed FastPass since we went very early most times, or near closing. Saw nearly everything we wanted to - including Fantasmic. Only problem was Test track's inaccurate wait estimation. I may post a topic on another board regarding that. It said 45 minutes, but was probably 90 or more. Had to leave the line since my daughter was feeling faint. (CMs were great - got us a wheelchair - went to first aid, and gave us Front of the Line passes after she felt better). Never even attempted M:S even though it was open.

That's all I havew time for. I've thanked everyone on other posts - but let me do it one more time. This was probably our last WDW vacation, at least as a whole family (though we're said that before) given the ages of our children - and it was definitely a great way to end it.

Glad you had a great vacaton ww52! I have to agree with your posts. Especially the last line.....about this being your last vacation, given the ages of your kids! We have been saying that for about six years! Ours are 24 and 22, single and spoiled rotten by vacations! They are even going to try to come along on our trip to Hawaii next summer, if it fits into their schedules! Vacations have become one of those 'family things' that noone wants to let go of! Memories that will last a life time!
I didn't know that about Mama T...name thing. I did hear another tidbit from one of our bus drivers....the black part in the center of the S/D was originally going to be the place the monorail went through....then they changed their minds about extending it that far.

DF.....finally....can't wait to hear your book! How much longer do you have?

hockeymom.....any more news today? PD coming your way. Getting close.

Anyone want some tums? No news yet, and I have to leave the house for some errands before football practice drop off and I am afraid to leave the phone!

WW52>>It sounds like you had a fantastic time! I also didn't know about MommaT's name! Same for the monorail story from Ozziewags. WOW! And people say it isn't Disney! LOL
DF>> Glad to see your name again! Can't wait to hear about all of your adventures!

Thanks again everyone for your P and PD! I will not give up praying until late tonight!

Debbie

thanks for all the info! I appreciate the candid pros and cons as yu described. Sounds like you had a nice trip. If I had to guess, before you know it, you'll return as a family - maybe with future in-laws and grandkids. I tell my teens that when they have families, I will borrow their kids to go to WDW if they are too busy :D I want to be the cool grandma.

Debbie - stay busy..........hopefully you'll hear soon!

YES YES YES YES!!!!!!!!!!

Called my principal, and basically heard first hand the same story I told everyone yesterday. Administration building has to place the call backs before he can fill his empty spaces. SOOOO I get my errands done, not taking the cell phone out of my hand which I had given him the number for. I get home and run up to the answering machine. NADA! I am now just about at wits end when I drag out the huge Flint phone book *our local phone book isn't even half an inch wide, and that includes businesses!* and find the number for human resources and ask for the appropriate person, leaving a message since she is busy. SHE CALLED BACK! Yes, I am on the call back list, she was slowly getting through everything and expected to be working late into the night. I repeated the important information that "Yes, I was called back and she would be sending the official letter later in the week, but I was expected to be at work at 8am tomorrow morning. WOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Called my principal to let him know, (and to find out what grade I had since everyone was moved around). It sounds like I have fifth grade. He wanted me in sixth grade since we are getting sixth grade back in our building again, but the two fifth grade teachers were in the background yelling my name for me to team teach with them. SOOOOOOO new grade *scary*, but great coworkers *YEAH*! Guess I'll be hanging out at the teacher store after school this week buying fifth grade books! :)

DH doesn't know yet. Tried to get a call in but his phone isn't picking up properly. He'll be, I think, more relieved than I am!

Thank you thank you thank you for all the support, prayers and well wishes!

HAPPY DANCING FOR YOU, DEBBIE!!!

I just checked in b/c school business is picking up at the office and I was busy today so I couldn't DIS at the office earlier. There are no words to let you know how happy I am for you.

I taught for one year a departmentalized 5th and 6th grade after teaching 2nd for most of my career. Now that was change!! However, I enjoyed the experience and it helped for my shift to school principal.

Now go and celebrate your wonderful news!!

Debbie!!! YAY!!! WOO HOO! that is AWESOME news, I am so happy for you :)

congratulations! your students are verrrrry lucky!

with SPG points we upgraded to CL

ww52, how many points were you charged for the upgrade?
thanks!

Madge

We were charged 1000 points per night per room. Got that calling SPG five days before our first night's stay.

The TV size is very large for a hotel room, but we didn't get any of the resort channels (the ones that show highlights of the parks and other areas). Seemed strange - because I'm sure it was there the first day or two we were quickly flipping through channels; yet about the third day when I was looking for it, one channel had a scrolling channel guide with a small window in the upper left with WDW info; the guide listed several channels of WDW info, but we didn't get any of them. We never called to see what the matter was; no big deal, but I do like having one of those channels on when we're in the room for background. Maybe just a temporary situation.

The check-in was very smooth; no problems on the bill, so we just left it on our credit card and therefore could leave without a formal checkout.

Despite the Swan being relatively tall (compared to the other buildings we've stayed in at GF and BC) we never had to wait long for an elevator.

Valet parking was worth the $10 a day, considering the heat and daily PM storms. Plus, I wasn't aware that you're not charged for every day - just the days you take the car out. I was prepared to pay $60, but only paid $30.

On another thread someone mentioned the poor lighting in the bathroom. I noticed it too when shaving; but on the plus side there is a vanity outside the bathroom also - I think the lighting there is better, but I never tried shaving there.

Minor point, but we noticed the wine prices at the lobby lounge and Shula's (and other places too I'm sure) were very high, even for a deluxe hotel. Cheapest glass was about $9.00; they had domestic beer at about $4.00, so $9 for the cheapest glass of wine seemed too high by at least $3. At CL I think it was $4 for wine and $2.75 for beer - but they close early.

Intersting story about the consideration of having the monorail go through S/D. I wonder if anyone has any concept art for that? I wonder how they planned to go from Epcot - through the World Showcase? Also - I wonder if they planned to go to MGM (probably) and if they had YC/BC and BW in the plans at that point?

Last point - I also learned that Thabo pronounces his name "Tah'Bo". And no one has exaggerated Thabo and Mama T's friendliness and helpfullness in the least.

So much to catch up and it's only been a an afternoon!

DF ~ so glad you caught my signal! Thanks for checking in and can't wait to read your adventures. Disbug's have come to an end - we need more!!!

ww52 - I'm glad you had a good experience at the Swan. I agree with most of your observations. It is a great place for our family, too b/c DSs are 18 and 20. I particularly like the fact that the pools are never crowded. That is so important to me - I enjoy space and not having to worry about getting a lounge. I have had this problem at the Disney resorts I have stayed at - most problematic at the mods. I've stayed at an All Star once (did not use the pool) and I would not choose to stay again.

I did use the lobby lounge one morning for breakfast while DH slept in a bit (we didn't do CL this trip) and I did find it quiet and relaxing to sit and have my coffee and croissant. Newspapers were available, too. Other mornings we brought our breakfast back to our room from the Lobby Lounge.

Re: Disney Info channel - we didn't get it either - it was listed on the channel selections card but it came in fuzzy and hazy almost scrambled. I was going to call to find out why but didn't bother. We did get the Disney channel like at home.

Mom Poppins ~ love those updates on your family. It seems like just yesterday our youngest was off to Kindergarten--- now he is a senior in HS. Time rushes on without me realizing it until I stop and think about how the years of growing up fly by! Which, BTW, ages me :( !

Well we spent our last 4 days at the GF - no high speed Internet so I did not even bother to try to get online. Too much to do and I wanted to relax and enjoy some resort time at the pool.
We had a great trip - I loved the Swan and I would recommend it and I would stay there again too - I would also like to try the Dolphin. I would need to to write a book to cover all my thoughts (which would probably only be interesting to me anyways!)

But here are some basics that I will mention...
This was my 7th trip to WDW but the first time staying at an Epcot area resort.
The Epcot area resorts are great for visiting Epcot and MGM. We love Epcot - I think it is our favorite park, so if someone loves to spend time at Epcot (or MGM) it is a no-brainer to stay in the Epcot resort area.

Our room on the 12th floor CL with a balcony and king bed was #1213.

Because we stayed at both the Swan and the GF during our trip it was hard not to compare them but they are such different experiences it is not really fair to compare them. This was my 3rd time staying at the GF - I love it very much. I have also stayed at the Contemporary, the Polynesian and CBR (and DTD hotels) that being said here are some thoughts about how the Swan stacks up to other Deluxe Disney properties in my opinion...
We had club level at the Swan and concierge at GF and I think that the breakfast at the Swan was much better than what was offered at the GF. More elaborate, better variety overall I liked it much better as far as a nice continental breakfast. They had true "fresh squeezed" OJ at the Swan, not at the GF. The danishes, croissants, muffins, etc. were better at the Swan. Little touches at the Swan were better too (peanut butter for the bagels, entire containers of yogurt, bowls for the cereal) Thabo & Mama T - need I say more - they are wonderful! :)
I did like the fact that the GF had offerings throughout the day and you could get refreshing lemonade, ice tea, cold water, coffee, etc the whole day long. The daytime snacks were nice and the tea time stuff was good too. The evening selections at GF we similar to Swan but a bit more gourmet. The Swan CL is only open at breakfast and evening reception time so you loose out on that flexibility in enjoying snacks and drinks anytime during the day.

I really think that the Swan had as good or in some cases better food and beverage service as GF. Our room service desserts and meals were better at the Swan.

That being said I still loved the GF and the resort feeling there is more to my liking than the layout of the Swan. I do love the GF - it is still my overall favorite resort for many reasons which only matter to me.

The CM's at the Swan were wonderful and the service was excellent. Value for money the Swan (with the Recipe Club rate offer) that I booked was a better value. The good rates and total value that the Swan offers (along with my SPG points too) high speed Inet, bigger TV, HEAVENLY-HEAVENLY Bed, excellent service, awesome location, great food, etc. Make it every bit the equal to other deluxe Disney properties - I would have no hesitation to stay there again!!

Any questions?

We had a great trip - I will try to get my pics uploaded soon.

Debbie - Congrats!! :Pinkbounc
