Have been underway since last summer, and include all the changes of the Westin Swan, just a bit different stuff. The Dolphin is getting the Sheraton "sweet sleeper" by Serta. It's nearly identical to the heavenly bed. If you browse a few pages back, I posted some pictures of the Sweet sleeper. I have never felt the rooms at the Dolphin were "run-down"...not even close. Renovations are always nice, especially when we are all traveling during these changes! If you strongly desire a Newly renovated room, please call and speak with a reservation specialist (directly) and inquire. ;)

We are thinking of staying at the Swan this time instead of the Dolphin. Besides the queen beds what are the differences? Is the room at the Swan much smaller?

When I called today they said that only the first few floors have been renovated so far? Do the rooms at the Swan also have balconies and what view do they have?

Hello, SGF....The Swan is a Lovely resort, offering Queen sized beds and an extra vanity sink (in the vanity outside the bathroom). The Dolphin also offers the vanity area, sans the sink.

There are four different types of views offered at the Swan . The resort view overlooks the hotel grounds, and may include a glimpse of the parking lot or the Disney-MGM Studios. This view is comparable to other Disney resorts' standard view. The lake and/or BoardWalk view includes a view of the waterway to the Disney-MGM Studios, gardens, and parts of the BoardWalk Villas . The terrace courtyard view offers a view of the courtyard, Dolphin, gardens, and possibly the swimming area. These rooms have a guaranteed private balcony for enjoying the view. The Swan also has views of the , CSR, BC/YC, and Epcot.

Here's a couple pics of the SWAN~

It's a beautiful place to stay~INSIDE the MAGIC of WDW~! Enjoy~!;)

DF99,
Thanks for all your posts and pictures of Swan/Dolphin. We're booked at the Swan for December 2003 and I'm looking forward to it, mainly because you, Ozziewags, Mouseteacher, Muffy and others have been posting about your wonderful experiences, plus for us, you can't beat that gov't rate! That said, I've just achieved Loews Platinum status...will Starwood match this? If so, what is the process (call, fax)?

JOC,
Happy to hear about your plans to visit the Swan. Starwood did match my Marriot Plat card. I had to fax them a copy of my card. I recently was approved for Loews Plat Status but never recieved a card or paperwork. If you can prove you have Loews Plat status to Starwood, I'm sure they will match it. If you did get a Plat Loews card, how long did it take to recieve it? Thanks!

Muffy

:bounce: Got that bounce in our step now that we are days away from a much needed WDW magical break. Will let you all know what's happening at the Dolphin and how our request to CLub goes (using points).
I am so looking forward to the fudge - you know how i feel about chocolate!!!;) Anyhow, a safe trip to all others traveling also.

Muffy,
Apparently Loews has a cutoff date for processing and sending out the cards... it's the 15th of every month. I missed last month's cutoff by one day, but the Loews customer service rep said my card will be mailed out Feb. 15 and that I'm already in the system as Platinum. I'll believe it once I actually have the card in my hand (and I'll also let you know)! How long has it been since you were approved for Platinum?

JOC,

What great news! Platinum Loews~Wow! Now, you are elegible for the FREE SUITE UPGRADE (usually a $35 fee) at any Loews for the remainder of the year.

For the Platinum SPG card, please call SPG services.1-888-625-4988. Stay on the line through all the prompts for the guest services dept. Inform them of your Loews Status, and ask them to please upgrade you to Plat. SPG. They will provide you with the FAX number needed to show proof of status with Loews.

After this has been achieved...the sky's the limit! You will always receive the very BEST room/suite (Jr. suite) the resort property has available. You also receive Club Level access/privs. and amenities with the resort FEE WAIVED! Also, many other perks are included for Plat. members.

Yahoo...you are on your way to the top of the clouds...the Starwood clouds, that is!! ;)

*P.S. Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad you like the pics...they are so fun to post! (LOL) If I can do anything to assist you in making your stay at the Swan/Dolphin or any other resort "more enjoyable", please do not hesitate to ask. :)

This is how my ressie shows at the starwood site:

Whimsical Themed Room With View Of Crescent Lake.

Room Amenities Traditional Non-Smoking, Lake View, Courtyard View, Hollywood Bath, Armoire/Tv/Stocked Minibar

Does anyone know where this is? Will we have a view of Epcot?

What is a Hollywood bath?

TIA

jgates, what about the dells, or do you go there often.
We are thinking about that for a small vacation weekend, to bad they don't have a starwood hotel. Unless you know of one there?

The Dells is only an hour & 10 minutes (depends on how fast we are driving!). My DD wants to go there for a weekend but the $249 to $400 per night for a waterpark hotel gets to be just a little too much. Considering the prices, we are thinking of a cheap hotel and buying a daily pass to Kalahari.

DF99 - Ever been upgraded at a Hyatt? We will be at our convention in DT Chicago in early April. Best rate (I tried all the Starwood properties-they had their own conventions & no discounts) ended up with the Entertainment Book right where the conference is at the Hyatt. We booked from our online class schedule instead of waiting for the books to be mailed out- otherwise I am sure they would have been too high up in capacity to honor. I am sure the hotel will be pretty full, but I would like to try for an upgrade if possible. I have a Hyatt card (I guess - haven't received anything in the mail but I did register online & she found my name in the system when I called for my ressie). We will have 3 of us there on 2 of the 4 nights and I am not all that familiar with Hyatt room styles, etc.

My Starwood Plat expires 2/04. Can I use Loews to get Starwood Plat AFTER it expires. I was told by a CSR at Loews that Loews Plat never expires! I still think that must be wrong info! She was very nice but did sound new! It would be GREAT news if anyone could confirm that the Loews CSR was correct?! I had to fax her a printed copy of my online acct. off of the SPG site. Is there a Loews site with acct. info?

DF, I love your pics! Interesting that only the Swan is getting "Heavenly Beds" and the Dolphin is getting the Serta bed you discribed. Can't remember the name of the Dolphins new beds but they sound everybit as comfy as the Heavenly Beds. Thanks for all the great info!

Muffy

:D

Hey, everyone, our reservation on spg.com now reads "Resort View" rather than "Limited view"! Things are looking up!

Janet in Michigan

4 inches of snow last night
9 degrees this am

Leaving Friday for sunny FL!:smooth:

Hey everyone!

Mitla96 - Read (as I sit in front of the computer here in Grand Ledge due to a snow day!) that you are in EL. Very close! Just wanted to tell you to have a great time in warm and sunny FL when you leave on Friday!

I have not yet made reservations for our trip at Thanksgiving, but want to stay at the Dolphin. After reading many of the posts, I went to spg and signed up as a preferred guest. They gave me a number at that time that I am assuming is now my customer number. I don't expect to have any points by the time of our trip, but would love one of those "free upgrades" that I've been reading about!! Saw a few pieces of advice about what to say when making ressies for possibility of an upgrade. Since I'm new to all of this, what's better - Jr. Suite or CL? Would either of these be possible when I'm going? Should I ask at reservation time (teacher discount) or email. I really don't know what to do! This is our first trip to DW with our kids and want it to be as special as possible, without spending an arm and a leg! And- I don't think they want either of these body parts of mine!!

I would love to hear what great advice any of you have about this!! Thanks so much!!

Oh, Scoggs, my son would be so jealous, we didn't get a snow day in EL! He was so hoping for one last night!

I went to the Swan/Dolphin site and under "special requests" put in the most timid request imaginable, so I am pleased to see this possible upgrade. I will post on my return and let you all know how it turned out.

Hi Mitla96 and scoggs, I am between Holland and Grand Rapids, and we got over a foot of snow last night! Over 300 schools in this area are closed today.

My husband and son flew out this morning headed to Naples, FL for a few days before going to Daytona Beach this Sat. for the race. I am soo jealous! A full week in sunny Florida for them while I'm left to deal with all this snow.:( Oh well, my turn is coming.
My daughter and I are going to WDW March 8-12 then to US 12-14. We are so excited, which brings me to my question....I've been reading peoples posts about checking their reservations on the spg site, so I thought I would check mine. I am confused about what type of room I've got. Under room features it says:

Deluxe Non-Smoking Rm, Step Out Balcony, Resort View With Balcony, Hollywood Bath, Armoire/Tv/Stocked Minibar, Queen Bedroom of Grand Suite. Must be sold at Hotel Directly

Any one ever had this type of room? I didn't book a suite so I'm not sure what this means. Is this a room with a Heavenly Bed?

Thanks for all your help.

I'm in the RAIN here in So. Cal...flooding, mudslides and tons of water which has nowhere to go!! LOL. The ground out here is not conducive (or porous!) to "drinking water" like Florida! It seems to become a "hardened surface" with the water just coursing over the top. A true recipe for disaster. And, to top it all off...no one out here knows how to drive in the rain...LOL. You Easterner's would all be laughing 'till you doubled over! :p

bamboozled...you have a VERY nice room. This is an upgrade over the "standard w/linited view" usually offered by the resort. This is the "Queen bedroom" of a grand/exec. suite. Which means, you have a suite room (minus the parlor). Perhaps...they'll "open" the parlor for you upon arrival. Ask if they would "include" the parlor if no one else is reserved in this area? I've had this happen at other properties, and it's always...always...always worth ASKING for such an upgrade. Hard to tell if it has a heavenly bed...you'll know when you arrive. You're sitting "pretty" right now~! ;) P.S. I have relatives in Grand Rapids and Muskegon!

Janet...please, keep us apprised of your progress on the upgrade status...wow, already a RESORT VIEW!! Good Job! :) How's Chaddie? Is he feeling much better? Do you have him all set in a kennel for boarding? Just wondering, and thinking of the little fella. ;)

Muffy....Loews Platinum is like every other frequent guest program level and must be "achieved" each year...although, there is a "way" around this. If you have SPG Plat., you call Loews and they "upgrade" your status. Then, when SPG expires, you do the same, and they "upgrade" you based upon your Loews Plat. status. This could go back and forth indefinitely! LOL. ;)

csmommy...the Hollywood Bath refers to the "exterior vanity with sink" (which is for the "stars" of your party!). :) With this description you "could" have a view of Epcot. If you desire such a view, make sure to especially "stress" this upon check-in, and arrive as early as possible to the resort. Also, do not be insistent upon "checking-in" to the room immediately if your desired view is not available. Inform the front desk associate you are willing to "wait" for the best room possible. This way, housekeeping can clean late check-outs, and you can either "store" your luggage in the bell-room, or leave it in your car, etc. Go and get a bite to eat, walk to the Boardwalk, or even hit a park. They will work to get you the BEST room available if they are not "pressured" to do so right then. This is especially helpful if there are "no" such rooms open upon arrival. I also use this tactic at the "Rose and Crown" (among others) restaurant. I make reservations, but when I arrive, I tell the associates at the podium I'm in "no rush/hurry", and will gladly wait for the best available seating. I casually walk around the pavillion, and relax. I usually never wait more than 10 minutes, and get seated on the bottom/top level balcony! It works EVERY time, and has never failed me! It's a "psychological" tactic, where if the "pressure" is removed, folks are more likely to assist you. Especially when you are "happy, smiling and cheerful" (carefree!). After all, WDW should induce this behavior (mood). ;)

jgates...you should be able to obtain an upgrade at the Hyatt, even with full occupancy. Call again, and ask if they have Club level service available. If you follow the tips listed above, you should have no problem. Think "positive" and be happy. Of course, it never hurts to bring a small token of appreciation to the front desk associates when you check-in. This works for every resort I've ever visited, not just the Swan/Dolphin. The front desk associates are the folks whom have the power to make/break the magic. It's not so much a bribe, as it is being thoughtful and considerate of persons working in a position of service. I also enjoy the opportunity to teach my DD the grace of "giving" freely, just for the sake of being kind. I began doing this years ago, and it is ALWAYS well-received by the entire staff. :) I brought some Pepperidge farm "Pirouette" cookies in the sealed tins (both chocolate hazelnut and french vanilla~$5 each) when I traveled to the Cottage Inn. These cookies are "delectible" and travel well. I placed them inside a little box, and tied curled ribbon over the side. I wrote a little card of thanks, and included it in the box. I was upgraded to the Deluxe Ocean view from a Standard Garden view without even asking. She accepted the cookies graciously, and then looked for the "best room available" (aloud). A little kindness...goes a long, long way. She also sent a thank-you card to our room with some fresh fruit (strawberries, etc.). Giving, is contagious. ;)

We have set a date for our WDW trip... finally a timer ticking away... I love to see it ticking away the days and hours. You will know when we are coming, with seven of us, 3 in strollers, who could miss us! lol! Just going into our church and down the halls to sunday school, we have our own short train, and take up a full pew!

When will the Dolphin start taking ressies for February 2004 or are they already, I checked the website and could not make them that far out... Love reading all your post and pics. Take care, Robin:D

Hi Lisa, yes we are getting the tail end of your storm up here today. So. Cal. flooding was on the news last night. Usually it's the other way around and you get "our" storms, but it sounds like its been dry down there this year. I have the day off for 'Lincoln's Birthday', love this government work, and the discounts we are able to obtain at the Swan & Dolphin. Deluxe resorts were always out of reach, to stay INSIDE Walt Disney World.

We are off to Old Town Sacramento this weekend for their early celebration of Mardi Gras presented by the Traditional Jazz Society. 3 days of bands, jazz and beads in a "historic" setting. It's really funny to go back East and see history, and then realize that nothing in California is earlier than about mid 1800's or so....And, unfortunately, no SPG properties nearby.

Have a great weekend everyone. I love to read all of your posts and trip reports about S&D and WDW. :bounce:

Dreamflight, Thanks for the reassrance that the Dolphin rooms aren't "rundown" as some reviews stated. You're the Dolphin expert and we're taking your advice. We haven't stayed in the Dolphin but were on the property last year and my daughters absoutely loved the lobby, restaurants, pool etc. So we're sticking with the Dophin!
Now,for my next question. We DEFINITELY want a resort view with balcony. I spoke with a very helpful Dolphin reservationist and she said that if I booked a standard room and use my points for an upgrade (1500 per night)as an Instant Reward at check-in that I would be guarateed a resort view with balcony room. She stated all of this on my reservaion and she said I'll have no problem getting the room. She said that if I wanted to get a free upgrade the it's not a guarantee. So, has anyone else done this to guanrantee a balcony room? And how did you make out?
Sorry this is so long. Thanks.
