It's time to replace our dishwasher but we've never bought one before (our current one came with the house) and we have no idea what to look for and what to avoid. Any recommendations? Any ideas on price? TIA!

We had to replace ours a couple of years ago since our GE bit the dust after 3 years!! We did a lot of research and a lot of looking before we decided, and we ended up paying more than we had intended and bought a Bosch. I have never regretted it! It is the best dishwasher I have ever had! It is so quiet I can talk on the phone right next to it when it is running (and it is at the very end of our cabinets). Also I am able to clean everything on the quickwash cycle (30 min) and everything gets clean, which savel a lot of electricity and water.

When we did all our research, we found out that you really do get what you pay for when it comes to dishwashers.

subbing, just went yesterday to Sears. My problem is we need a bisque color and there doesn't seem to be a big selection. Tonight we are going to Lowes.

Bosch! When we bought this house it had a stainless steel Bosch dishwasher. Best dishwasher EVER! So quiet and EVERYTHING comes out so clean. I have never tried the quick cycle, I guess I'll give it a try. I would never buy any other dishwasher.

Whatever you do, don't by an Electrolux. We got ours when we were building and it has broken three times since we moved in - November, 2010. Each time, the parts to fix it had to be sent by FedEx which added several days to the repair process.

As the repairman said when he came, "Electrolux makes great vacuum cleaners, but their other appliances are pretty cruddy".

Absolutely agree about the Bosch. Bought one about a year ago at Lowe's on sale, about $500, stainless steel, love it! so quiet, sometimes I think I've turned it on and I haven't, can't tell the difference.

Don't go with LG - they may make good TV's and phones, but their dishwashers are awful.

We just replaced it with a base model Kenmore. While it is a little noisy, it does a GREAT job of cleaning. I just read an article on CNN(maybe?) that said the newer dishwashers today all clean well, so when you are paying more you are buying other features (like quieter operation) but not superior cleaning.

Good luck!

With all due respect, I don't agree. I think all diswashers clean "decently" when they are new, but some are definitely better than others. We started with a Kenmore and although it was very noisy, it cleaned well...for a few years, then after that I had to basically wash everything first before I ran it. When we re-did the kitchen we bought a GE, because dh worked for a subsidiary and got a great deal on all the appliances...Well, a great deal is only a great deal if the appliances work well. The diswashed did NOT!! It did not clean right from the very beginning, and when we researched it (too late), we found numerous complaints.

The Bosch has a different type of cleaning system. It is based on a European model, and it definitely cleans better. I don't even have to rinse things before I put them in. I LOVE it and would't buy anything else.

Don't buy a JennAir, while ours lasted a long, long time, it sounded like a freight train in our kitchen. Forget about talking on the phone! Geesh. Several relatives and friends have had problems with their new LG appliances and it didn't matter if it was the stove, fridge or DW. I'd err on the side of caution. I know Lowe's had a floor model Bosch that was only about $75 bucks more than a KitchenAid, which is also good. Good luck!

I'm with the majority here. Our Bosch is about 14 years old and still runs like a dream. NEVER have had a service call for repair until last month. It was making an awful noise. The guy came out, took out the bottom drain cover peeked in and pulled out a piece of a plate that I broke. That was it. Cost me a bundle for the 10 minute service call, and I was really disappointed that I wasn't going to get a new stainless Bosch with the hidden control buttons. My major appliances never seem to break down at the same time! I have a black stove, bisque fridge, just had to buy a new microwave. (that is now a stainless/black bosch) I would highly recommend the BOSCH dw. Oh btw, when we bought it, I bought the floor model, and saved quite a bit of $$.

Do not get a GE Profile! Got mine about 4 years ago,and it has really been awful.
I thought I had done adequate research-my mistake!

Thank you so much for all the input! It's great to hear the Bosch is quiet. We have to have a quiet machine because our kitchen is open to our family room so it has to be quiet to watch TV or be on the phone. We need a white dw as all of our appliances are white, so maybe it will be less in white? We don't mind spending more if we're getting a good product that will last a long time and it sounds like that's a Bosch.
