My mom is getting a new computer, ( I get the old one for a graduation present) and she wants a Dell desktop, but not really sure of the specifics, and I just wanted to get some help from someone who might know, seeing as the sooner they get the computer, the sooner I get the computer.:teeth: TIA

Just got our Dell to replace a 4 yo Hp. We customized and ordered it online. We love it and would recommend it to anyone.
Price: $968. very reasonable.

I know that we want a Dell, but there are different specifics and that is what I am unsure about.

I LOVE my dells -- I have a desktop and a notebook, and they're both great computers. My notebook is actually a refurb, and its been wonderful.

What kind of stuff does your mom want to do with the computer? That'll make the biggest difference as to what you should get.

well, my mom does lots of writing for her articles for a paper, she uses Quicken a lot, and checks her e-mail. My sister uses AIM and listens to music and I think wants to be able to burn CD's.

We bought a desktop about 4 years ago, and I just bought my son a laptop as a combination 18th birthday/high school graduation gift. We were going to order online but decided to call the Dell toll free number to ask a question, and they took another $100 off the price! Definitely order by phone!

Really like my Dell. Use it daily for small business. I can still count the number of lock ups on one hand since I received it last August. Have had 2 Compaqs and 2 HP's. The fan in the my Dell desktop is extremely quiet. When I had techs in to work on my other computers I would ask them what brand they would recommend. Dell was the preferred and recommended machine by far for various reasons. So far their advice has paid off as I am very pleased. Good Luck!

My Dell laptop arrived today!! Just finished hooking up the router for wireless so maybe I can actually use a computer in this home with a teenage son. What a difference from the old HP PC extremely fast! They were a pleasure to deal with when ordering.

"My Dell laptop arrived today!! "

Just an update. This is a wonderful laptop. Fast, clear, burns cds in a flash. Now the only problem is I want to replace the old desktop pc with a new Dell!!

It seems like a pretty basic setup will work for you guys, then. Dell is running a great special on their Dimension 2350 right now, it starts at $699, and if you buy it online you can get a free hard drive upgrade (to 60GB, which sounds like it would be more than enough for you guys), a free 2nd bay CD burner (so you could have a burner and a regular CD-ROM -- much easier to copy CD's you already have that way) and a free 256MB memory upgrade. I was able to customize a really nice model for $1,034 (with a $150 rebate, so really it would be $884!)

Just so you know -- the free hard drive upgrade, free memory upgrade and free 2nd bay CD burner offers expire on May 13th, but Dell's always got some sort of offer like that going on.
