New laws as of today. Children up to age 6 have to be in a booster seat. The old law stated only children up to age 3 had to be in a safety seat. Also anyone under the age of 16 years old has to be in a seatbelt in the backseat. The old law stated anyone under 10 years old.

i thought the new law was 7 years old had to be in a car seat?? my ds was out and i just put it back in today.. he was not to happy about it pirate:

That's a good law. NC just went to 8 years old or 80 lbs the first of the year. It sent lots of parents running to buy booster seats as they had removed their children way too early. The under 16 seatbelt rule has been in place in NC but we do not have the no child under 16 in the front seat. Its a interesting though however as they really are safer in the back at any age.

:firefight 'go ahead and flame away. I'm annoyed. Yes, yes, I know it's oh so much safer.

DS4 is 49 lbs and 46 inches. Now he has to go back into the booster. DD8 is 88lbs and 56 inches. I didn't see on your website that she has to go back into the back seat.

How we all managed to survive to adulthood is beyond me. :sad2:

Nothing like big business to create laws and make sure that I have to support them.

And yes, just so you know, I will be following the law. We do try to stay out of jail. We teach our children to do the right thing. However, some laws are stupid.

Yep, Tennessee changed this year to booster through age 8 unless over five feet tall. It sure sent a lot of parents back to the store. Lucky for me, my 8 year old DD still was sitting in her booster, but a lot of her friends had been out since they were 5. My kids actually prefer to sit in the boosters than without. I'm just glad I have a van. With three car seats in the back seat, it would be a squeeze!

What if you drive a truck, there's no backseat... So, then it would be either illegal to have children in your truck, or fine for them to be in the front seat of a truck, but not in the front seat of a similar sized SUV.

I too wonder how we all survived back then. Of course, cars were made much better then, there were slower speed limits, and fewer cars on the road.

My old Caravan had such small seats in the back that a booster seat made the kids sit up too high! It really wasn't safe to have them in booster seats in the third row. The seatbelts came across their chests perfectly without the booster seat. The booster seat would have made it less safe for them.

Thanks for the heads up about the change in the law for NY. When we ever drive down to WDW again, we'll make sure we have the kids in the back seats in NY!

I live in Tennessee as well. Our girls haven't been moved from the boosters (ages 8 and 4). They actually enjoy them because it's "their seat" and because it helps both of them see out of the window better.

Is there a law about the age at which children may sit in the front passenger seat in NY? I haven't found anything about that. I have recently begun letting my almost 14 year old ride up front. He is taller than I am now and weighs over 100 pounds.

Thanks!

It's not illegal to have a child in the front seat. It's strongly recommended that a child under 12 not ride in the front seat if there is an airbag there. As long as the child is properly restrained they can ride anywhere in the vehicle.

Children 3 and under have to be in a child safety seat
Children 4,5,and 6 have to be in a booster or child safety seat
People in the back seat under 16 have to be in a seatbelt
Everyone in the front seat has to have a seatbelt on. When the front passenger is over 16 they get the summons, not the driver

I'm confused! You mean, in the past, in NY, if you were under age 16, but in the backseat, you didn't have to wear a seatbelt?

This part of the first post is what got me:

"Also anyone under the age of 16 years old has to be in a seatbelt in the backseat."

These laws are being made because children under 80 pounds and riding in a car with no booster have more internal injuries or even death when in a wreck. These laws are not stupid. They will save lives and heartache. Glad your going to use a booster.

For the past several years everyone in the car has to have a seatbelt regardless of age. In fact I was stopped at a random stop and the guy didn't think my kids were buckled and gave me a warning--my son pipes up that he had his on. The officer smiled and just said good for you--wear it always. We do not leave the drive without all of ours on--adults and kids alike.

Personally, I don't understand why they don't require seatbelt use for everyone in the car.

Please be aware that more injuries occur to kids under 80 lbs at amusement parks than on our highways.

well, the fact is, many kids did not live to adulthood, thus the laws to make it safer and therefore assure that more of them survive. this is not about big business, this is about child safety.

my children are 5 and still in 5pt harness restraints. We got seats that have a high weight and height limit.

Newtowdw1, I'm glad your 4 year old will be back in a booster seat. Why wouldn't you keep him/her in it as long as possible, law or no law? Our 7 year old is still in hers, and most kids around here are. There are some laws that I do think are dumb, but none of them have to do with child safety. Do you ever give other kids a ride anywhere? I guess your post shows why they need to create these laws: because kids can't refuse to go places with their parents, and some parents need to be forced to do the safe thing for their own children.

I felt similar, even though my kids are/were in boosters until 8 and 80 (MA law). However after a few years of carpooling and watching what goes on I have softened a bit. Most parents, like us, will do what is right, unfortunately for those that don't sometimes we need laws.

Just yesterday I followed a car with a 5-6yo child literally hanging out the passenger window, arms waving, a toddler jumping from seat to seat and two parents in the front. Nobody in that van had a seatbelt and the kids were not even sitting. If a law is what it takes to make those parents buckle those kids I guess I can agree.

Anyway, MA has had 8 and 80 for a long time so I am used to it!!
