New Cars

What exactly is the difference between a sunroof and a moonroof? They seem like the same thing to me.
I was always told that a sunroof opens and a moonroof doesn’t, but I don’t know if that’s correct. I know it was called a moonroof in my paperwork and it doesn’t open. It has a shade that keeps the light out, and I push a button and the shade rolls up and my roof is now a window.

Hehe. I regularly get close to 500 miles on a tank in my ICE Camry. Granted, that's 13-14 gallons, but still. lol
15.8 gallons for the ICE Camry. 13.2 for the hybrid version to save weight. So 700 to 800 miles to a tank depending on whether I am getting 50 or 58 mpg but I never run my tank below a quarter.

I'm not running it to empty though. BTW, 13 * 50 = 650 miles. If you're not running below a quarter, means you're using just under 10 gallons, so you're getting <600, even at 58 mpg.

What are "parking warnings"? The things that beep if you're getting too close to an object when parking?
Yes. I need them now more than ever since I'm in a much bigger vehicle. Parking isn't my strength. lol

I guess "Parking Sensors" is the better term.

Sunroof/moonroof - This is what I have in my car. It can be opened like a sunroof or opened like a moon roof. It looks like this:

To me, sunroof/moonroof/'panoramic' roof are all marketing terms for the same thing. On the majority of vehicles, likely there is only one type of glass roof offered. How big that glass area can be is largely determined by the shape of the roof. There needs to be enough flat surface for the roof to retract into when fully opened and that is what determines its maximum size.

The definitions have evolved overtime and what they originally meant 30+ yrs ago is no longer true. There are no universal definitions for this type of feature and each car company makes/markets whatever they think will sell the best.

But they're not the same thing. As is evident in the link I posted above.

Short version, a sunroof lets no light in when closed. A moonroof lets light in when closed.

Well then I guess someone needs to tell the manufacturer of my vehicle. I have what they call a 'sunroof' and even when the glass is fully closed there is a retractable 'shade' that can either be open or closed. You have a choice of if you do/don't want to let in the sunlight.

Have you ever had a dealer order you a car to your specifications vs just buying what they have on the lot? Most of the cars on the lot have a lot of options I don't need or want to pay for. I built the car the way I want but all the cars on the lots are $3,000 or more because of unnecessary options.
Yes. But here is the kicker - you don’t have a lot of room to negotiate when you order it the way you want it. You can negotiate some things, but you might get a better deal by negotiating on a car they have on the lot with extras you don’t want. Sitting in the lot = costing them money.

Moonroof, Sunroof or whatever else they are called all look like leaks waiting to happen.

I am not sure I like the idea of a window on top of my car (moonroof), especially if it is makes the car feel bigger, when I am wanting a smaller car/SUV anyway. So I will definitely be looking for one without one.

I have thought of that too. Especially if it is a 2024 when they are starting to stock the 2025's.

I have a 360 degree camera that makes parking so easy. It is a feature I never thought I would need but now that I have it would never want to be without.

My gas gauge must be off then.

And if you have a limited budget for whatever car you want to buy, a lot of extra frills will simply drive up the price.

Pretty much every car I've ever owned has had a sunroof/moonroof and I've never had a leak.

I have a Honda Pilot now and it has the panoramic one and it is really nice on a dreary day to have all that glass on the top. We had the panoramic glass tinted pretty dark so that we could have the shade open even on sunny days and the sun wouldn't glare through it.

None of my sunroof equipped vehicles have ever leaked. Although common sense goes a long way as well. Never leave the roof open when parked outside since leaves/debris can accumulate in the channels causing the drain holes to clog.

Too funny since many of those newer supposed 'safety' features I find more of a distraction while driving. The ones that beep/chime/buzz or constantly flash some warning message are a nuisance. They tend to get set off for reasons not obvious to me and cause you to take your eyes off the road to figure out what the car thinks you are doing wrong.............LOL. Fortunately, on the car I now own, you are able to go into the setup menu and turn most of those annoying things OFF...........fine by me.
On a prior car, the steering would suddenly get very stiff if it thought you were drifting out of your lane. Actually, I was changing lanes in order to prepare for a left turn. I can imagine someone getting startled by how the steering suddenly behaves and might overcompensate by pulling very hard to the other direction and perhaps run their car off the road.

If that sort of software logic is also used to feed any of those 'self-driving' features some cars now offer, I would NEVER use it and think it will be years before systems are advanced enough to be safely incorporated into the vehicle operation.

As others said, if you have your turn signal on, this shouldn't happen.

I am expecting a learning curve for sure. And of course, I am sure not even using half the features.

I'm currently still in the "learning curve" process over here. I was driving a 2012 Outback until a month and a half ago. It didn't have any of the "fancy" features that are pretty standard now. No backup cam or any of the safety stuff.

Now I'm in a 2024 Mazda CX-50 and still getting used to the lights/warnings/etc. But overall, I've really been liking it! It's probably too big for you but the CX-30 is a bit smaller and the CX-5 even smaller than that. I think they have a nice look to them and so far I'm really enjoying the way it drives.

My mom was like you an kind of annoyed that so many 'extras' are there that she didn't really want, like the sunroof. But in the end, she decided it wasn't a massive deal as long as the price wasn't terrible. She ended up getting a CX-30 and likes it so far.
