New Car Advice Please

That's funny! My 13 year old has his eye on a Mustang. I guess it may be worth looking in to when he gets older. he is watching every dime I spend on this car for his sister to make sure I keep this even when he gets that age.

ANY male driver + Mustang= EXPENSIVE insurance dh is in his 40's with a good driving record but the drop in our insurance payments when we sold our mustang and bought a new different model car was insane (I had a mustang as a single female and the premiums were SO much less than what his were). and lord, the cost of replacement tires

I'm so happy that you love yours. We drove it and fell in love too. It's a very cute car.

I'm not paying for satellite radio, it just has that feature if you wanted it. She is more excited to be able to plug her iphone up to it and play her own music.

I need to check on insurance this morning. I'm nervous about that!

another thing to consider if this is a car you plan on lasting through college for your dd, and you're hoping the warranty will carry her for awhile-if you have an idea of the area where your dd will attend check the proximity of authorized repair places. I know with our car warranty it has roadside assistance that will tow to one of their authorized places, but some warranties don't-and if that's the case you need to consider the availability/proximity of those repair places or risk hefty tow bills (and rental car fees to get from their to college housing and back while the car is being repaired).

I'll ask, but I'm getting this child out of a dream of a Range Rover or a BMW into a Hyundai. I doubt very seriously she would cave anymore and drive a le Sabre or a Taurus.

My kids knew if DW and I were paying for the car......DW and I were picking the car. They had no vote.

Once they got their generic 4 door cars (Tauruses)......and saw friends whose parents did not buy them a car.......and had to work 3 jobs to pay upkeep and insurance on the fancy .........they never complained. And they always end up driving their friends since their friends never have reliable cars.

Now my son was DISAPPOINTED I didn't get him the Crown Victoria, because we discovered the Police Interceptor versions.....which are among the fastest cars you can buy,........have the same low insurance rates as the civilian versions.
Range Rover and Fiat have to be the least reliable cars on the planet, and as any BMW owner will tell you, there is a REASON BMW's come from the factory with a tool kit built into the trunk lid!

This is a fact! My husband had a good driving record and insurance for his Mustang is killing me. I say had bc he just got a speeding ticket, he's lucky he's alive!

that's hilarious! No, I told her that she can buy her own dream car once she graduates from college. Until then, she will drive what we feel comfortable with.

This is still more than I wanted to do but looking online and everywhere I was having a very hard time finding something that would fit her, without 100k miles on it. I will forever hate buying cars after this experience.

I have to show that picture to my daughter!! She has a few friends who's parents bought them Range Rovers and one has a land rover and they are already falling apart, but of course they are older though.

We are in the final stages of going with the 2013, even though they hit me with a few taxes, he did split the cost since I was quoted the $14,5. I ended up paying $15k. It's still below book value so I feel good about it. It was so late in the day that they are going to deliver it to me tomorrow. I live and hour or more from the dealership. All of this was done by phone, but we did drive one just like it this past weekend, and I will check it out completely in the morning. My daughter is so disappointed that she can't get it tonight but she will get over it. She can't even get her license for another week.

One thing that I can add for $250.00 through the bank is GAP insurance. I am seriously considering it. I have never had it before that I know of but with a teenage driver it might not be a bad idea since it's such a newer car.

Have him get a classic Mustang! My brother bought a 66 when he was in HS and he still has it today 20 years later. Now I have one too.

That's funny because my husband had a 69 Mustang grande, or something like that, for years. He drove it in high school. He gave it to his brother a few years ago and I don't know where the car is today. It had been in the family since it was brand new.

I actually had a mustang once myself. That car would fly! That was 21 years ago and when I had my first child I decided I wanted a momma car.

It is my experience that any Honda or Toyota with 100,000 miles is 10 times the car in quality and reliability than any brand new Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Hyundai, or Kia. I have always bought 100.000 mile Toyotas for myself. Never have I had to repair a vehicle. I fell for the want of something brand new back in 2007 and bought a Mazda Tribute (Ford Escape) and it was the 2nd worst car I've ever bought. I bought it because I couldn't afford a new Toyota or Honda. In fact, I've only ever owned 2 cars bought brand new, a Ford and a Chevy product and they were the worst 2 cars I've owned my entire life (3rd worst would be the acquired through marriage Chevy.)

I agree that the Hondas and Toyotas are good cars. My oldest daughter has a civic on it with right at 100k miles, but it's showing signs of age now. My husband drives an Accord and he loves it. I have had two of them myself and I have never has an issue with any of them. I drive a Chevrolet SUV and never again will I buy a Chevy. It's paid for so I will continue to drive it for a couple more years.

My point was that this car needs to last my daughter at least 6 more years so I didn't want to purchase a car with high miles on it now, no matter what brand it was.

Oddly enough, I read recently that one of the most common cars with 180,000+ miles sold at the car auctions is the Chevy Cavalier. Certainly not what one thinks of when you think longevity. But, despite their minor issues, major malfunctions are fairly rare.

My Chevy cavalier started having major problems as soon as I paid the darn thing off. It was a great car up until that point. The alternator went out and then shortly after that the engine itself began to have problems. It was a 1998 and it was not driven hard at all.
