New Canon T2i now need lens help

I have a canon T2i with kit lens but I really need a good zoom lens but would love a lens that would/could be my primary go to lens. You know a lens that could maybe take the place of my kit lens and have some zoom to it. If this is even possible, I am complete newbie to DSLR and admit I don't know much at all about lens or photography. I am learning as I go. I would like to keep it under $300 at moment and I know that won't get me much but it's all I can afford.

Let's start with a little technical clarification that could help you in your search. If I'm saying something you already know, sorry. I just want to make sure we're talking about the same thing. A zoom lens is just a lens that can change focal lengths (like the 18mm-55mm or the 55mm-250mm). As opposed to a prime lens which is just one focal length (like a 50mm). Standard focal lengths would be considered around 18mm-80mm, depending on who you talk to. Telephoto focal lengths are usually 70mm or more. Then there are the all in one lenses ...a zoom lens that covers the wide end of standard to the longer end of the telephoto, like the 18mm-200mm. Those get shuffled from standard to telephoto and sometimes listed as thier own category, depending on who you talk to.

So, from your post it sounds like maybe you want an all in one zoom? A lens with a wide range in focal lengths so you don't change lenses much?

Yes pretty much this. I would like to not have to change lenses no more than necessary. Sometimes I don't have time to change lens to be able to catch that certain pic (especially when were a taking pics of kids).

Hi, you could try the Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS ($ 320.00) or the Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 II DC OS ($399.00). The Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS is a little over your budget ($564.00)

They are good all around lens. If you really want to stick to only one lens these are the best options.

I think you want a "all in one lens" like a 18-200mm or a 18-270mm, but those maybe out of the price range. A good lens to add to your kit lens maybe a Canon EFS 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS II. They are selling at about $160. Also you may find out a one, long range zoom lens, may weight as much as the 2 lens combo.

I agree with the 55-250IS telephoto lens recommendation, it's sharp, covers a wide range and inexpensive
