New Cannon XT and Disney... Need tips... etc..

Hi All!

I just recently got a Cannon XT and honestly I have not had much time to use it or "play" with it... sad I know...

This is the first digital SLR I have owned (prior digitals point and shoot) many many moons ago (dare I say almost 30) I owned and loved my film SLR.

With that said, we will soon be leaving for WDW to celebrate our twins 4th B'day, can anyone offer any links, tips, reccommendations for how to capture those great Disney pictures I keep seeing. Mainly I am looking for camera tips... settings etc... Somehow I don't think setting it to Auto... is going to get me what I want!

Hi and congrats on your purchase! I have to say that I just got my XT, so I can't give you much advice. But I will say that I had a film rebel for years, and only used it on Auto until recently. I loved most of the pictures that came out. Auto is not always a terrible thing!

Someone may give you good advice on settings that will help you, but I find trial and error, with the advice given, will still take time. Remember that the Auto is there to help you if you find you're not satisfied.

My recommendations will probably seem simple because I too am new to dslrs. I did use my nikon d70 on auto & sport modes but I am not confident enough for manual settings yet.

We were at disney last week and here are few ideas:

I recommend a good and comfortable bag for carrying your camera. DSLR's with extra lenses can be heavy. I found a bag that was a camera bag on the bottom and a backpack on top for extras.

I recommend gallon size ziploc bags in your camera bag just in case of a downpour (it rained every day we were at the park).

Let your camera adjust for the humidity. We walked around for a while and then I took my camera out of the bag, my lens was then fogged for quite a while when I wanted to be taking pictures.

Take an external flash. Fill flash can really improve indoor and shaded areas.

The first things I suggest you learning more about are changing the ISO and controlling the DOF with aperture priority mode.

If you have the time, it would not hurt to pick up Bryan Peterson's Understanding Exposure. It is easy to read and has tons of good information.
