I've been teetering on buying DVC for a few weeks, trying to ferret out all of my questions. I've also seen posts referring to someone buying in at 100 points, or someone being able to split their 160 points between 2 resorts. I am one that is interested in 2 resorts on different coasts - BLT and VGC, but I didn't really want 160 at one of them. So I called my guide today with these very specific questions.
1) Can I buy in at 100 points instead of the 160? Guide response - only AKL and SSR offer an "incentive" to buy in at 100 points instead of the 160. Any other resorts require a 160 base contract.
2) I want to buy points at BLT and VGC, but would like to split my 160 between the two. Can I? Guide reponse - no, you can't do that. You need one base contract for the 160 and then you can add on another resort for less than the 160. I will call my Quality Assurance Manager to verify that though... It looks like you were correct. You can split the minimum 160 points between two resorts as long as one of the resorts is at least 100 points. So you can't split BLT 80 and VGC 80. One of them would have to be 100 and the other 60 in order to split the points.
3) Can I pick whatever use year I want? Guide reponse - the default UY for BLT is Feb and VGC is June. But yes, you can select your UY for what fits your travel best (likely Sept in my case). If I would select a UY prior to June (VGC default), I would not get my VGC points until 2010. If I select June or after, I get points in 2009.
So if anyone is getting a different response from their guide, I recommend asking them to contact their QA manager to verify. My guide admittedly had one of these questions wrong.
The ultimate answer will likely come tomorrow when I finalize my point split on my new buy-in and put my money down. I'm leaning towards 100 BLT and 75 VGC, but I need to do some more analysis tonight to make sure I have my split right.
