New at this and unsure how this would work

We own at Saratoga with a Dec use year. I was going to book two studios for mid June 2020 at the 11 month mark to make sure I have the spots. We want to see if we can get a 1 bedroom at OKW, BLT, or other 1 bedroom that allows 5 people at the 7 month mark. When I make the change at 7 months would I cancel one reservation and modify the other? Do the cancelled points go back automatically so I can use those points for the modification of the other studio to a one bedroom? I was considering just booking one studio initially but I don’t want to take a chance not getting the second (there are 5 of us so we need the extra room). I don’t want to get in a position where I have to borrow points because the cancelled reservation points don’t automatically go back in the point pool.
I am almost tempted to just keep the two studios at Saratoga and not worry about changing but, after staying in a two bedroom with the washer and dryer, I am leaning towards the 1 bedroom. I have plenty of points for the two studios or one bedroom so no borrowing would have to take place.

Yes, once you cancel a reservation the points are there immediately to be used. Then you would modify the remaining reservation to the 1BR.

I think you're fine to do the switch. June is not a terribly busy DVC time and switching to a 1BR should be pretty easy.

Thank you for your reply. Now it looks like we maybe taking one additional person so that bumps us up to a 2 bedroom or 2 studios.

I have until the 21st to decide if I am splurging or going budget with the points. Decisions decisions...
