Our fridge broke yesterday. We decided it was old enough we may as well just replace it. Ordered one with the same dimensions & specs online from one of the big home improvement stores yesterday afternoon. It should be delivered sometime in the next couple of hours. It isn't any more expensive than the one we bought 13 years ago!

I had the impression appliances were still hard to get in a quick time frame (we know several who waited months for fridges or stand alone freezers a few years back)! Maybe it's just the particular model we chose was more available. Anyone else been pleasantly surprised by an appliance purchase lately?

We had to toss a lot of food, but we didn't have it jam packed like it sometimes is. And, it was an excuse to get rid of a few things that were past the best by date and we weren't using, but were still really okay. And stuff we didn't really need or use anymore anyway. We saved some things with a cooler and ice overnight, but I'm not sure how much I'll trust them. I'm excited to start over with a clean slate!

We just replaced our washer and dryer as our old dryer was erroring out constantly and nothing would work to fix it. They were delivered 4 days after ordered....except the new dryer has yet to complete a cycle without showing an error code. The store will only take a return 48 hours after purchase, the earliest we can get a service call is next week and at this point I'm ready to scream.

That is so frustrating!!

We had to replace our fridge about 7 years ago -- Kenmore. We went through 3 before one finally worked properly.

I did replace my electric oven (the cheapest offbrand we could find when our oven died two days before Thanksgiving one year) with a gas oven (Samsung). Love, love, love it.

Earlier this spring we replaced our 30-year old washer/dryer (also Kenmore). We have a Maytag, and Home Depot delivered in less than 4 days. We like the app notifications, but it is a bit persnickety. Once it decided we needed to run a cleaning cycle, it wouldn't let us run a load of clothes. Didn't even get a warning that we had XX numbers of washes left.

You might need to check your power coming in at the outlets. I recently had issues after storms where my lights would greatly dim when I turned on the dryer. I don't have the type of dryer that can give an error code (old beast it is 🤣 ), but I had noticed that clothes weren't getting dry in one cycle anymore. Apparently, I'd been having the issues for a while, but the storm really exacerbated them. The utility company came out and re-ran my lines and it is so much better - everything is working better, even the fridge. Power imbalance like that can damage applainces, so it could be that the newer, smarter, dryer is noticing that and cutting itself off. It's just a thought, but considering two different dryers were doing it, it's something that came to mind.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll pass that on to my husband to look into.

We recently bought a new stove. It was delivered in 2 days. Not much more than we paid for our other one that was $20 years old. But I guarantee it won't last nearly as long. They don't make stuff like they used to. :(

Yep, it used to seem like appliances would last decades. Now 10 years is supposed to be good. It's done on purpose by manufacturers. Planned obsolescence. Terrible for the planet. I hate to be part of the cycle of that by just buying a new fridge, but when repairing it would be halfway to the cost of a new one (plus more time consuming since we'd be going much more time with no fridge), it's hard to justify.

I redid my kitchen 2 years ago. We ordered the appliances in January so that we would have them when we needed them late March or early April. I bought all Samsung appliances - NEVER again. The oven needed the ignitor replaced in February or March, not something I expected on a less than 2 year old appliance. It also didn't qualify for service under a warranty because they went by the date sold, not delivered. I am now waiting on a new ice maker for the Fridge. The part is back ordered and it's been 2 weeks. It MAY be in by the end of the week. The appliance repair people told me from now on to stay away from LG and Samsung as they are both known for these issues.

I have a 2005 off-brand fridge (Admiral) that was here when we bought the house and even though I do not like side-by-sides, I don't trust new appliances more than I dislike side-by-side. I'll replace it when the compressor dies (maybe... unless a new compressor can be installed instead). My BIL gave us their 3 year old, $1200 french door fridge for our garage because the freezer leaked everywhere and ruined the floor underneath, and was developing rust spots on the doors. Shameful garbage for the price. It's an overflow fridge now and we have multiple floor drains in the garage so a leak didn't matter too much, although we did end up repairing it.

We have a Bosch dishwasher (from previous owners) that I know started to be made in 2002 and discontinued in 2007. I've had repairman out for other things and they've said the parts aren't made for it anymore. Although it still runs well, I don't want to turn it on and have a problem, especially a water problem. We plan on buying on new one this Fall. Same brand. When I look online, they all seem to be in stock. Looking to buy another Bosch.

Like you, I used to blame the appliance manufacturers for "planned obsolescence" but now, having watched too many of the house-hunting shows, I wonder if some customers aren't partially to blame. I've seen so many clients walk into kitchens on TV and say "Oh, all these appliances will have to be replaced so we have 'updated' appliances." It used to be that there was a buzzer on the dryer to tell you your clothes were done. Now, the right one will call you on your cell phone, so of course that's the "IN" thing. Technology moves so fast. It used to be-who cares how 'updated' the appliances are. Do they work? My mother bought her first...and last...dryer in 1955. She died in 2022, but the dryer, ugly as it is, still dries clothes. My mother never cared that it didn't call you on the call phone. It seems there's less incentive for manufacturers to make long-lasting appliances. Off my soapbox now. Carry on!

We purchased a new kitchen aid refrigerator during the pandemic. Took 6 months to get it delivered. Could have had other brands delivered much quicker (Samsung), but been there, done that. And never again.

My 14 year old LG washer died last month. Purchased new LG washer and dryer from Lowe’s and they were delivered the next day.

Neighbor went to small appliance store and got same day delivery on a new drop in cooktop. But I suspect it may just depend on what you want and what is in stock.
Boy, I hope my fridge isn't about to go. It's a Kenmore made by LG and it's 13 years old. It replaced a Montgomery Ward fridge made by Fridgidaire. We elected to replace it when it was 27 years old. It still was keeping stuff cold, but it was starting to make funny noises when the compressor kicked on.

Maybe your dryer venting is plugged up?

I’m no appliance expert, but I did stay in a Holiday Inn last night.

We had checked that over and it's not. Thanks though. Fortunately it's not raining for the next few days and I've got relatives in the area that I can bring my laundry over and do, so it's just a waiting game until the service person can come now in 2 weeks (it was rescheduled again).

I am glad to hear you were able to replace that without a lot of hassle!

We have some friends who had to replace a stove (the oven caught on fire), during the height of Covid. It took them a few months to get a new one. My mother in-law replaced a refrigerator (just because she wanted a new one) during Covid. She was able to do so, but it did take a few weeks for it to arrive.

That's what I don't understand. Why does everything need to be "smart" in some way? Why do you need to communicate with your dryer? Mine has like three settings and a timer. That's it. Even my new car, which while it does have some nice, useful computerized fetures, a good 75% of that stuff I will never use or is just unnecessary. It's really crazy.

Totally agree! I just replaced a dryer that has lasted over 40 years. It didn't have all of these electronic gadgets so my brother was able to fix it whenever something went wonky. I specifically wanted a new one without the electronics. It has a dial for the setting and dial to start/stop.

I just need it to dry the clothes...I don't want it to be able to sign up for online dating!

I don't get it, either. We bought our washer and dryer in 2020 and went for about the dumbest ones we could find while still being energy efficient and having a delicate/hand wash mode. The dryer buzzes when it's done. If I'm far away from the dryer I don't need to know when it finishes because I can't do anything about it.
