I plan to buy AP for our trip in May. We will be staying on site so I should be able to make FP at 60 days for the resort stay, rather than at 30 days for the AP.

But I think I read that I need to have a ticket in my MDE in order to make FP, not just have a room reservation. So how do I get my AP into my MDE, without activating it until I arrive in May? I'd need it in my account by March to make the 60 FP, but I don't want to use up 2 months of my AP before we even arrive.

You buy a voucher rather than the actual pass. You link the voucher to your MDE and you can make fastpasses. When you arrive at WDW, you go to a guest relations or ticket window and exchange the voucher for the actual pass and your year starts then. When you buy over the phone or online, you are either mailed the voucher or given a will call #.

If you do will call you can just put that conf number in your MDE to get AP linked to book FP. If you buy voucher from local Disney store there is a number on card or receipt that you put into MDE. I personally had to call on mine bought from local Disney store, friend did hers right from WDW website and I put in Will call number. Once at WDW we still had to activate our passes there for starting 365 countdown

yep, easy as pie. Buy your AP over the phone, internet or at a Disney store, get a number to enter into your MDX account. Make your fastpasses at 60 days. When you arrive at WDW you activate your annual pass, and it starts the day you activate it. You do have to visit a Guest Relations or ticket booth to activate it. I don't think they will do the activation at a resort. Make sure they give you an AP RFID card when you activate, you'll need it if you want to redeem discounts or use the free parking. After you activate you can go into MDX and order your AP magic band.
