Okay so I have never been really sick before. Sure I've had a cold and sometimes a fever, but thats it. Since this past Thursday, my entire throat has been swollen. My glands are huge and hurt like no other. I haven't been able to open my mouth in the past 5 days! That means no talking, eating, etc.. I also cannot sleep because it's too enlarged and swollen for me to lay down. I went to the doctor Saturday and got a shot and an antibiotic. He tells me to come back Monday and I should be better. Well I go today (different doctor, same office) and I still cannot open my mouth wide enough for them to even get a throat culture. They took a blood test and said they THINK (thank God) it's not Mono. However, I am then told that I get one more shot and if it isn't better when I come back tomorrow I am going to the hosiptal.

Okay, so I'm sure I'm just being a baby, but more that anything I do NOT want to go to the hospital. I told them I would take 20 shots over the hospital. My other thing is that I seriously cannot open my mouth, the pain is just too excruicitaing! I know if I go to the hospital they are just gonna yank it open and probably make me feel like dying! I' ve never been to the hospital before and am kind of worried they want me to go. Has anyone ever had anything like this happen to them? Did it end up just being Strep throat?? I am aware I am a very paranoid person ...

:D

Just wanted to add, not only does the pain and sickness itself upset me, I'm missing a week of classes (one test) and Spring Break is next week. If I'm not better by Sunday, I'm stuck here in Kentucky instead of on the beach in sunny Florida...:(

You poor thing! I hate to tell you this, but you probably need IV antibiotic therapy. The hospital is not the worst place in the world. Wouldn't you rather go to the hospital and get better versus staying sick for a while? If you cannot eat or drink, you will become dehydrated. Good luck and I hope you get better soon.

with WeirdEyes. The hospital can be a scary place, especially for someone unfamiliar with them. However, I do think that may be where you need to be. Do you have any family close by who can help you? If not, then don't be afraid to ask questions and tell the staff that you're apprehensive. Don't be afraid. The staff should be able to put your fears to rest and make you feel more comfortable. If you get someone who is short or brusque, politely ask for someone else. Just remember that they are there to help you, and you'll be on your way to recovery soon.

One more thing...I know it hurts ALOT (I used to be very suseptable to Strep), but it will be better to go through the few minutes of pain for a culture than to not...the sooner they know exactly what's wrong, the sooner you'll be well.

Good luck!:goodvibes

Just think of the hospital as a place to lie in bed all day with people there to wait on you hand and foot:D See? Not so scarry now. I hope you feel better.

First of all, its ok... I know what its like to be sick. I had Mono when I was teenager ( ) it was bad... but I recovered.

The hospital isnt neccesarily a bad place. I had a MAJOR phobia of hospitals after my dad died but since then Ive had 3 kids and havehad to go in twice for other things. The thing to remember is that they are there to help you get better~! If your doc recommends it then go! :) They will help to get better!

Im sorry you feel so bad! I hope you get better really soon!!

I have had symptoms similar to what you describe but I had mono. It was the worst week of my life. I was only 11 and I could not swallow without gripping on to something and having searing pain the entire time. I know the hospital is sacry but they need to know what's wrong in order to treat it and after several days of no fluids or eating you will need IV rehydration. You will feel better, so don't worry about the hospital. They are there to make you better, don't be scared!!

Wishing you the best and sending pixie dust!!

Sorry to hear you are feeling so bad. I hope you find relief very soon!!!

The hospital only seem's like a scary place! They may know just the thing to make you feel more comfortable and who knows, you might get lots of cards and presents!!

I know it may be scary, but I agree -- you need to get where you can get some fluids into you.

I hope you feel better soon.

 If he admits you, just do it. The IV antibiotics will get rid of it quicker and you'll suffer a shorter period of time. Hoping you're back to yourself soon!

I had what seems to be a similar situation when I was 18. It started out as just being sick so i went to the dr. and they told me it was a sinus infection. I went home and started taking the meds they told me to take, and a few days later I was throwing them up. I went back and they told me I had the stomach flu, gave me different meds, again came home and started them up. and then not only was I throwing them up too, I started getting the huge swollen glands on my throat, and I also couldn't open my mouth (except of course when it was forced open by throwing up). It was horrible, and I was kindof upset with the drs. so I just layed on the couch for a few days. Then finally I started having barely any pulse so my mom had to almost carry me into the dr. She looked in my throat and it was covered in blisters. I had strep (which they had earlier tested for, and it came back negative) =(. The good news was she prescribed me with this pink liquid stuff. It cleared up the strep and made my stomach stop hurting. And I was back to being ok again (after 2 weeks of being sick.) I hope you feel better soon, maybe you could ask for the liquid pink stuff ;)

tricia.

Just think of it this way.... there is the chance that if you go into the hospital you may possibly be better in time to go to FL. If you don't you may not. But also remember, even if you are well enough to go, you may need to take it easy, especially for the first few days. Hope you feel better soon. I'll send up a quick prayer for your recovery....................P:p

It is true. If they get the antibiotics into you via IV. Well, you'll probably only be there a day or 2. And you may actually feel well enough to go relax next week on beach. It is amazing how quick you can start to recover with the right therapy. Unfortunately, the culture will probably be painful for 20 seconds. But once done, they can treat you correctly. Ending all the pain quicker.

My daughter who is 23 just got over this, with such a horrible sore throat she was in tears over it. She went in to the doctor and they gave her antibiotics. She did not have mon or strep but a bad case on tonsilitus. She was so sick that her face broke out in huge fever blisters that spread from one side of her mouth to the other, and went up to her nose area. She ended up taking some meds for this also. It took at least two weeks for her to feel better and her face it slowly clearing up..my advice if they want to put you in the hospital please let them, if you have anything like my daughter did a hospital stay will shorten your illness. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon.

Do hope you feel better soon, MAndy. And yes, fluids. If you need the hospital, go. They dobn't check in people who don't need it. My best.

 Hugs to you. I have also been there. I had this happen to me once also and it was awful. You know it's not a good thing when 3 different dr.s look down your throat and say "eww" . My glands were almost touching across my throat they were so swollen. I did end up in the ER because my throat was literally closing up and it was blistered but I can't for the life of me remember what it was they called it (I was really out of it for few days). I do remember the pain pills made me sick to my stomach so I just suffered through the pain.

I also had mono about a month after the throat thing and that was painful as well. I really think admitting you may be the best thing if you can't even open your mouth. Do you at least have close friend or boyfriend at school that could go with you and speak up for you? It will be so much easier to handle if you have a familiar face with you.

I hope you are feeling better soon.

Oh goodness, you poor thing. I am so sorry that you're in so much pain. I had to go to the hospital once for severe stomach cramping, and it was amazing how comforted I felt once I was there and they were helping me. It really isn't as scary as it seems. The doctors and nurses will look after you and have your best interest in mind. {{{HUGS}}}

Believe me what ever that going around is dangerous. I had to. I could not talk either. I had headache that felt like migraine. On top that I could not call work tell them that I was sick because I was unable to speak.

Let them put you in hospital. It will know what's really wrong with you so the DR know how to treat you.

I hope feel better soon.

I know what going through because I have been going to the doctor for a month now. I have doctor apppointment my self my ears sill have not clear up.

I hope you feel better soon! I had mono a few years ago and it took my doctors a month and 4 blood tests to confirm it. Hopefully they will find out what is wrong!
