NEVER AGAIN! A holiday family vacation report...

Love it! Also love the fact that I'm going to get to see it and you in person!:woohoo:

I know! I can't wait! :goodvibes

I like your new bag. I need to get something like that. I don't bring much stuff and most are either to big or way to small. I usually just bring my money, cards, camera and a few other little things that I can't think of now.

Thanks! I think this one might just be perfect. Everything else I have is either too big, too small, or doesn't have any sort of organizational structure, so I spend too much time trying to find things in it. :rotfl:

Really love it!!!
Thanks!

that is an awesome bag!
how long is the strap?

It's pretty long, and adjustable. It's long enough that I can wear it comfortably in a messenger-bag style, and it can be made long enough that DH can do the same.

We arrive on Friday, March 19th.

Oh, you arrive the day after we leave, then. :(

---------------------------------------------------------

I had hoped to work on my final installment or two this afternoon, but we were at school until after 7:00pm :scared1: helping with the aftermath of state testing, day 1. The next round of state testing is in late April, so at least we have a while before we have to deal with the potential for 12+ hour days again. I'll try to get the next update up tomorrow or Friday. :thumbsup2

Great bag! I'll be glad when my children get older and I don't have to carry around all of their stuff.

Can't wait to here more about your trip. :thumbsup2

I am enjoying your TR and pics! I didn't know HS had a fireworks show. I learn something new every time I come on the Disboards! I absolutely love the Osbourne lights - we saw them for the first time during our last trip in Dec 2008 and I can't wait for our trip this year as there will be lots of firsts for our group. Plus I'm a little nervous that everyone will get along - my oldest son's gf isn't really excited to go and doesn't think she can be away from her animals for 6 days. My son is anxious to share her first trip to WDW and I just hope she goes and has a great time. It is so hard to go with relatives and make sure everyone is happy.

Great bag. I am so jealous that you are going again in 13 days. I hope you have a great time and tell us all about it.

Just thought I would share that my next trip is a big family gathering although it is nothing as complex as a Disney trip. We are planning a trip to Colorado this summer. My brother lives there and my cousin is just a half hour away. My sister/husband/two kids will meet us there. They live in Vegas. They will spend two weeks there with my sisters inlaws and there will be a 3 day overlap with their trip. My brother and partner will be meeting us there from NYC. My mom will also be there. I am considering asking if my other cousin's daughter if she would like join us as well. She is the same age as my oldest and very close with her uncle, my previously mentioned cousin. We are renting two condos. To sum it up the trip will include:

My family of 5
My sister's family of 4
Her inlaws-2
My mother -1
My brother -1 (his girlfriend will be stopping by I am sure)
My brother/partner -2
My cousin-1 (also has a girlfriend that we have come to love but she lives in Denver)
My other cousin's 16 yr old daughter.

My aunt/uncle also mentioned coming too but we will have to see about that.

Wish us luck that we can be tolerable of one another in such close quarters. Feel free to provide me with any tips for an extended family trip. LOL!

I'm sure she'll have a great time! We leave our cats for 5-6 day trips all the time, and they've always been fine. Unless she has horses, I can't imagine a weeklong trip being a huge issue.

Where are you staying?

that's an awesome bag!

Thanks!

Updates???

Coming up first thing in the morning! I always wake up at least an hour before DH, so I plan to write an update then. :thumbsup2

We leave a week from tomorrow!:banana::banana:

My only tip would be this: give everyone some freedom to do their own thing some of the time. If you try to keep that many people together all the time for 6 days, at least one of you won't survive the trip! :rotfl:

Departure day

Despite the late night on NYE, we were up relatively early on January 1. It was departure day, and we had to get packed up, get the luggage checked for the return flight, and get out of the room by 11. Our plan was to meet everyone for breakfast at Artist’s Palette and hang out with MIL/BIL at the resort ‘til 12, when their ME pick-up was scheduled. Then, we thought we’d head to DTD for some last-minute shopping, and then catch our ME pick-up at 3. Of course, it didn’t go that way.

First off, we made a tactical error in our repacking. See, the forecast for Jan. 1 originally called for the weather to be similar to NYE, so as we were repacking our clothes, we put our hoodies in the suitcase with the dirty clothes – they smelled horrible from the fireworks fallout the night before, and we didn’t think we’d need them.

We took some pictures as we walked from the room to the Springs for check-out:

Then, we had a fiasco trying to get the luggage checked… ok, actually, we didn’t, but the two groups ahead of us at the airline check-in desk certainly did. It took me over 30 minutes to get our one checked bag checked! :confused3 I later found out that my parents and MIL also had issues – for some reason, Disney’s records had them booked through to the wrong cities! So they also spent a long time with airline check-in.

Around the time I finally got the luggage checked, it started to drizzle. I went inside and joined the rest of the family as they ate breakfast. While we were sitting there, we were looking at the plastic hats we’d gotten at the NYE party the night before. We didn’t want to throw them out, but we also didn’t want to carry them on the plane. I decided to try to find some scissors so we could cut the sticker w/ the logo out of the hat. First, I asked the DVC guy if he had scissors, and he didn’t… but he did mention that DVC was running some add-on incentives for existing owners… and convinced me that we should go meet with our guide to find out about them. So, we scheduled that for 2:00, thinking it would force us to get back from DTD in plenty of time for our ME pick-up, and then went to the front desk to ask for scissors. While we were using the scissors, I noticed that it seemed to be raining much harder, and started wondering whether the ponchos were in the checked bag or the carry-on.

Soon, it was 11:45, and time to walk MIL & BIL out to the ME pick-up spot to say goodbye… and it had gotten chilly! DH & I were both in short-sleeve t-shirts, too. My mom decided she didn’t want to go to DTD with the ECV in the rain, and dad had already found a place to sit and watch football (the lobby area outside of the Turf Club). Even though I really wanted to go back to WoD to get the jacket I’d found the last time we were there – this was my plan even before it got cold – we decided to see if the rain would stop first, and asked the DVC guest to see if we could change our appointment to something earlier. We ended up with a 12:30 or 1:00 appointment, and headed over to the DVC info center. Our guide was out on vacation, but another guide came and shared the incentives with us. We were tempted, but the only place that DVC is selling that we’d like to add on is BLT, and the incentives for BLT were not that great since it’s selling well. So, we helped ourselves to some ice cream and then headed back to meet my parents. It was still raining, and by now it had gotten COLD. So cold that we nixed the idea of going to DTD completely, and went to join my parents.

Mom & I then decided to go to Artist’s Palette for lunch. It took FOREVER. Apparently, Jan. 1 was departure day for a lot of people, all of whom decided to just stay at the resort since it was cold and rainy. Mom was in line for over 20 minutes waiting to order, and another 15 waiting to pay for the food. We had wraps and a cup of chili, and the food was good. I saved some of mine for DH in case he was hungry.

We ended up just sitting around the resort and watching football. At some point after we ate, I ended up back in the gift shop area, and bought a pink DVC pullover fleece because I was so cold. Thank goodness for the AP discount, I saved $12 or so.

Around 2:45, we headed up towards the front. We returned the ECV to bell services and picked up our carry-on bags, and headed over to the ME pick-up area. It was more crowded than I’ve ever seen. Apparently, the 2:30 bus hadn’t shown up yet. :scared1: The first ME bus that showed up was just dropping off, and we had some pretty upset people who’d been waiting nearly an hour for their ME bus. Finally, a bus showed up at 3:15… and it had already picked up somewhere else, so it was half full. The driver began loading the people who were scheduled for 2:30, and then, when he had seats left, loaded those of us who were scheduled for the 3:00 pick-up. We weren’t on the bus until 3:30… and then we got stuck in traffic! So the 30-minute drive to the airport ended up taking nearly an hour. I wanted to check both Disney stores in the airport to see if they had the jacket I’d wanted at DTD, but the security lines were really long, and my parents, who don’t travel often, were nervous about it. So, we went through security, and once through, went to Burger King for dinner.

Our flight boarded on time, and we thought we were finished with the drama for the trip, but …

Up next: the last bit of drama we experienced, and the lessons we learned

:goodvibes Really...how can you leave us hanging like this?

Great report, btw, I really enjoyed it.:thumbsup2

Look at you! Almost finished AND a week before your trip!
I'm impressed!

Sorry the weather turned off so chilly that you didn't make it to DTD. Do you think you will be still looking for that jacket when you go back?

Have you been checking resales for an add-on?

Well, I have to do something to make sure people keep reading! :rotfl:

I'll probably look for the jacket, but I don't know if I'll buy it. By the time we get home, we should be nearly done with jacket weather here in Texas. But, anything's possible!

I do check resales sporadically, but we really can't afford to add on right now. Plus, we already have 300 points, which has proven to be plenty for us at this stage.

We had that issue too when we left in Dec. We had such wonderful bus service the entire trip but we waited forever for ME.

I am terribly curious to find out what your last bit of drama is.

For some reason many people end up doing much different then their plans on the last day. I'm a little surprises that so many people were checking out on the 1st. I would think that every one would have the idea to check out on the 2nd and it would be that way.

ME service back to the airport was by far the worst bus experience we had all week... especially because it was cold and rainy, and we were waiting outside.

I'll finish up tomorrow morning with the last drama and my final thoughts.

too much a cliffhangr, come on, finish!!!!!! :lmao:

Patience, my dear grasshopper, patience. :lmao:

ME was crowded, so there seemed to be a lot of people checking out. It could have also been people who arrived on the 1st and didn't want to head out in the cold rain. I'm assuming the crowd in the main building was all arriving and departing guests, since everyone else had use of their room if they stayed in the resort that day.

Just read your whole TR tonight. :thumbsup2 I have thought about a fun extended family trip to WDW, then I read TRs like yours and change my mind. Too many people to deal with and someone always ends up losing out.
