Give me the highs and lows of Netflix (or any other similar service out there.)

Is it worth the money to you? What plan do you have? Customer Service? How fast to you get your DVD's? If you take one DVD at a time, with shipping turnaround, how many can you borrow per month? What happens if video get lost in the mail? What is the new Netflix Device the site says you have to have in order to have the movies delivered to your TV? Is this something you have to buy from the company? If you use this, does it work well?

Thinking of trying the free trial. New Release movie prices have just sky rocketed!

We just get one DVD at a time. Turnaround for us is about as fast as humanly possible. If I stick it in my mailbox on Monday, I have a new movie by Wednesday. Every single time. I've had one get lost in the mail, reported it and they just marked it received, no further questions.

We watch a lot "instantly." A certain number of DVDs are available to watch right away from your computer. Not all, just some. But the selection is slowly becomming fairly decent. I watch a lot of tv shows that way.

I'm not going to try to get too technical, but my son also watches Netflix instantly through xbox live. We also have a computer hooked up to a tv and we can watch Netflix "instant" stuff that way too. I can't imagine you'd need another device.

You just can't beat Netflix. Well, well worth it.

A few weeks ago I would have had nothing negative to say about Netflix whatsoever. I still think it's great, overall, but I find lately that I am having to wait a longer time for new releases. It used to be that if I had a popular new release at the top of my queue and timed it just right so that I had a movie received back the same morning, I would always get that new release the same day. Now, there are 3 or 4 newer movies that say "very long wait"

Aside from that, I love having the movies mailed to me. I love not having to worry about late fees. There is a great selection. And I have always had 1-day turnaround.

You know what? I DO have a complaint about Netflix. It's possible I'm doing something wrong, so maybe someone here can correct me. I find that it is hard to know what new releases are coming out when. Even when I go into "browse" and "new releases" I'm pretty sure the results show things that aren't necessarily brand new, kwim? I think I'm missing a lot of new movies. Does anyone else find this to be true?

I love it. We have the 3 at a time. I use it mostly to watch series that I have missed. I have watched 3 seasons of Dexter, on season 4 of 24 and season 2 of Nip/Tuck. It is very fast on the turnaround. If I mail it on Monday I generally have another by Wednesday. Have had a lost one a few times and they just took my word for it. No big deal. The only complaint I have and it is tiny is sometimes on a series where most disks will have 3-4 episodes, near the end of the season the last one will only have one episode. I feel like I almost wasted a disk but then had to see the last episode. I wish they would just put it on with the previous episodes.

We just got a PS3 so we switched to Netflix because of the streaming capabilities. So far, so good :thumbsup2

We decided to do the 1 out at a time and we upgrade to the Blu Ray access. If we didn't have streaming we would probably do 2 at a time. In the summer I rent a lot of tv series so we might bump up to 2 out at that time if enough isn't streaming. I also am signed up for Red Box so we get some new releases there when we want new release right away. I get free codes from them once or twice a month, otherwise it is just $1. Can't beat that!

I go to the Amazon website to find out what is going to be released in the next couple of weeks. Their listing is very up to date. Then I add them to my queue. I try very hard to mail back a movie on Saturday so that I get a new release for Tuesday otherwise it does come up with "very long wait". It worked out this week! I'm getting The Final Destination in the mail today :goodvibes

I just upgraded to two at a time discs and made a seperate list for the kids- the seperate list is a great feature because I can be sure that they always have a movie and we always have one. Between the streaming, dvds and the new digital antenna channels broadcasting free HD we dropped our satellite service. I couldn't be happier with Netflix and am now spending around $15 per month instead of $60 and am never left flipping through the channels with nothing to watch.

This is one legitimate gripe, IMO. Here are 2 sites (not run by Netflix) that are a Godsend.

Everything that's available on instant watch:
http://instantwatcher.com/

streaming soon
http://www.streamingsoon.com/

Bookmark this one, because I don't know how the heck to find the link from the Netflix site.

All videos releasing for the current week:

This is a huge problem with us lately too. It gets old quick.:headache:

I look up new releases on a different website as well. I have no idea why netflix doesn't list new releases:confused3

Is it worth the money to you?
To me, yes.

What plan do you have?

3 at a time (best deal overall, IMO)

Customer Service?
Never contacted them, but no gripes either.

How fast to you get your DVD's?

This is a bit longer for me than for most. I don't live close enough for them to receive the DVD and mail it back for me to get it the next day. In my area, it's normally a 4 day process. Mail it, they receive it 2 days later. They immediately mail my DVDs out and I receive them 2 days after that.

If you take one DVD at a time, with shipping turnaround, how many can you borrow per month?

You can do this math easily by finding out how close you are to the shipping center in your area. Most will have a 2 day process.

What happens if video get lost in the mail?

Never had this happen, but one time we did have a problem with a DVD and just logged onto the website, stated the DVD was faulty and the next day the new one was mailed. Since we were requesting to have it replaced, they immediately mailed it to us. If we stated the DVD was faulty, but we didn't want it replaced, they wouldn't have sent the next DVD in our queue till they received the faulty disk back (makes perfect sense to me).

What is the new Netflix Device the site says you have to have in order to have the movies delivered to your TV?

I'm sure they are speaking of the Roku. It's not a device made by Netflix, but the device can stream Netflix to your TV. There are other devices that work too. A Blueray player (I believe), an Xbox 360, a PS3, and if you can hook your TV up as a 2nd monitor to your computer, it would work too.

Is this something you have to buy from the company?
No. Netflix itself does not sell these products and if they do, they're selling a product made by someone else.

If you use this, does it work well?

I don't use the Roku, but have heard nothing but great things about it. We use ours on the computer and via Xbox and Live and have no gripes. Every TV in our house (aside from the one in my bedroom) can play instant watch movies now. It is VERY annoying to use the Xbox 360 controller as a remote control though. I get infuriated with it about every time I stream a movie. One little bump and who knows what might happen. You might bump it and pause the movie, stop the movie, etc... etc.. etc.... Anymore, once I get it set, I put the controller way out of my reach so I don't accidentally bump it with anything.

On Netflix, the fast forward/rewind is nothing as nice as we're use to with DVDs and even the older VHS. If you can live with that however, Netflix is fabulous. I guess it's allowed a flaw or 2.

Love it!! Totally worth it. We are looking into getting a blu ray player and when we do, we will watch the instant stuff even more. Right now my DD's mostly do it with their laptops. We have a very quick turnaround time. Have only have 2 problems in the past 4yrs, one was a faulty disc and one was never recieved and we just reported both and they took care of it no questions asked and very fast. I just love having the movies on hand for whenever we can watch them and being able to keep them until whenever incase we can't all watch them together, noone misses out.

I absolutely love it. In addition to having everything I could ever want my second favorite quality is that I can, and do, often upgrade from my 3 a month to an 8 a month plan when I know a vacation or snowstorm is coming. If I change mid month I only have to pay a pro-rated amount for the rest of the month and then remember to go back to my original plan the following month. I just did this for Thanksgiving and Christmas and will, no doubt, do it again during the next snowstorm whenever that happens.

No complaints at all. On the rare occasion I have gotten a bad disk all I had to do was report it on-line and a new one was on it's way before I even got the flawed disk in the mail back to them, no penalty. Also, if a disk is late getting back to them I select that on the website and they send me the next one on my list without question.

Thanks everyone! I think I'll try the free offer.

Another question, though: Have you used the ROKU box for unlimited movies? It's under $100, and we don't have an xbox, blu-ray, or the other devices that work with this. It seems that this may be the way to go. Yes, a one time investment, but then just $14 for movies whenever we want.

I have been a Netflix member since March 2003, so almost 7 years now.

I absolutely love their service. I am on the 3 movies out at a time plan, $17.99 per month. If I get a movie off pay-per-view from DirecTV it's at least $4.99, and some even higher than that. Netflix is so totally worth it to me.

If I sent a movie back on Monday, they get it on Tuesday and ship my next one on my list out that day, I get it Wednesday.

I have had a couple go missing, they said they shipped it, never got here. I just report it missing. Have never had a problem in doing that. Had a broken one once, let them know it was broken, they sent a new one out that day.

One time the wrong movie was in the sleeve, we watched it and enjoyed it so it wasn't really a problem and that's the only time that has ever happened.

I don't watch the instant ones on my computer, the picture is not good quality that way. And I haven't been interested in getting the box thing you hook up to your TV to watch them that way either. I may be in the future, but just not now.

I love the fact that I don't have to drive to the rental store (20 minutes away) to get a movie, and especially love it that I don't have to make a special trip back into town to return it, and no late fees either. Keep the movies as long as you want.

Like I said, I love their service. I have over 100 movies/TV shows on my list, and I'm always adding more. I prefer watching movies at home, on our TV with surround sound, instead of going to the theater.

Oh, one more thing. The way I add new releases to my list on Netflix is to go to my local movie theater's websites and see what's playing. If I'm interested I just add them to my Netflix list under the "saved" section. Then when the movies are about to be released they automatically go to the bottom of my regular list and I just move them up to the top.

I have had Netflix for years, and I'm very pleased with them. Two thumbs way up from me!

Is it worth the money to you? Yes, absolutely.

What plan do you have? Right now we have the 2 at a time unlimited plan.

Customer Service? They have always been helpful. A couple of times I have received an unwatchable DVD (scratches or chips). When I've reported that, they have sent out a replacement ASAP with no questions asked and no hassle.

How fast to you get your DVD's? I get them very quickly. If I mail them a movie on Monday, I get a new one on Wednesday 99.9% of the time. I do live not far from our regional shipment center (about 50 miles away from it).

If you take one DVD at a time, with shipping turnaround, how many can you borrow per month? As long as you get an unlimited per month plan, you can get as many as you can watch. Just keep sending them back, and they'll keep sending you new ones.

What happens if video get lost in the mail? You report it to them, and they send you a replacement of the DVD. As long as this doesn't happen all the time (and I can't imagine any scenario that it would), you won't be hassled.

What is the new Netflix Device the site says you have to have in order to have the movies delivered to your TV? Is this something you have to buy from the company? If you use this, does it work well? I don't know about this, as I have a TiVo, and you can watch Netflix movies on it.

Thinking of trying the free trial. I say give it a try--it's free after all, so what do you have to lose?

That helps my subscription a lot!

Most of what I use Netflix for are the Instant Watch movies (19,000+) now, I don't see how you can go wrong, especially when the lowest fee is just over $9 per month, get one DVD at a time but access to ALL of the instant watch movies

Another good website is http://www.hackingnetflix.com/ -- it's basically a blog of Netflix news & info. Every week, they list all the new release DVDs and all the new release streaming movies. They also talk about a lot of rumors and updates to Netflix, so I like to keep an eye on that site just to see what's new.

Anyway, back to the OP. My DFi and I do the 3 dvd plan. We have our account split into two separate queues - one for me, one for DFi. He gets 2 dvd's at a time and I get one. It's nice because he doesn't like most of the movies I want to see, and I like about half of his movie choices. So with 3 dvd's, we usually wind up with 1 for me, 1 for him and 1 for both of us to watch. It works out pretty nicely.

Our turnaround time is awesome. We have a facility here in Cedar Rapids, so I'm sure that helps. If we mail something back Monday afternoon, we'll get new movies Wednesday morning.

I've had dvd's get lost before (I think 3 in the 6-ish years we've had Netflix) and they just mark it as received and sent out a new one. Easy peasy!

As far as the Roku box goes.. I've heard amazing things about it. We stream videos through our xbox 360, but I'm thinking about getting a Roku box to put in our bedroom. DFi likes to watch movies as he falls asleep, so it'd be nice to have access to Netflix movies in there.

Lately (within the past month) I've had an issue with getting new release movies, too, as a few other PP's have said. This seems like it's a recent problem, though - I can't remember ever having to wait more than a day or two to get a movie. But right now I've got a few movies (District 9, Paranormal Activity, Inglourious Basterds, The Hangover, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince...) that all have "very long wait", and I've had them on my queue since before they were even released on DVD.

We subscribed a couple months ago when our TV broke and we moved the TV from our room downstairs and connected the Xbox. For a live membership that DH already uses for games plus the $9 per month Netflix my kids will never run out of things to watch. We can "watch instantly" on the computer, put some movies into "Instant Queue" and watch them from the Xbox plus have 1 DVD at a time. I don't know what we did before - oh wait - I do know. We used to spend TONS of money on DVDs that we would watch once or twice and then never watch again!
