Netflix to be new exclusive home of Disney

Ok so can someone settle this for me. I've heard it'll only be select disney movies and movies from 2016 going forward. And I've also heard it'll be every disney movie ever made.

Can anyone clarify that for me?

Netflix is replacing Starz as the Disney home on "pay cable." Netflix cut this deal in 2012 right after they were unable to renew their partnership with Starz.

Instead of going to Starz (or HBO or Showtime) on pay cable, Disney, Star Wars, Marvel new releases will go to Netflix instead. The movie will come out in the theaters, then go to home video/PPV, and then go to Netflix when it used to go to pay cable. This starts with films like Zootopia, Captain American: Civil War; Alice Through the Looking Glass, etc. in September. Films will eventually still make it to broadcast TV and "basic cable" channels.

This is about new releases, older Disney films and series will still come and go on Netflix as they already do. This does NOT mean that all Disney movies will be available at all times on Netflix. It does not open the "Disney Vault."

If this is the case, I'm disappointed. We got back from a cruise a couple weeks ago and we all LOVED having all the Disney movies on demand. So, when we read about this deal with Netflix we thought it was our dream come true!

I'm sure there will be increased Disney content, but this deal is really about taking Starz, Showtime and HBO head one...to have the new films just as early. So, while X-Men: Apocalypse, Batman v Superman; The Angry Birds Movie; Secret Life of Pets, Deadpool, etc. are on the pay channels on cable, Netflix can counter with just as recent Capt America: Civil War, The Jungle Book; etc.

Thank you!

I firmly believe that Disneys next Aquisition will be Netflix. Won't be for a while but it's an area Disney are desperate to get into properly. If they owned it, added all their content including ESPN as well as royalties from all the other studios will be a worth while purchase in the long term

Netflix will not be an easy acquisition for anyone. Not until something changes substantially. They are valued at $42 billion.

Now it's questionable if their business model can really sustain that sort of valuation (growth has already peaked in the US, but they have a lot of other countries to expand in), but for now that's the sort of figure it would cost to pick them up. Even with a stock swap I'm not sure Disney has that much sitting around.

Agree - DH and I discussed this very thing last night. They need Netflix, but can't afford to lay out the $$ it would take to acquire it.

I personally don't want Disney to take over Netflix...it's not a given but I could def. see them raising the pricing a lot more than $1 or $2 at one time or taking price increases much more often than Netflix has been (though I could see Netflix doing more since they are doing more and more in-house Originals). Making an agreement to stream and have DVDs of a certain production company and/or their subsidaries is one thing but purchasing it outright it something quite different.

Also Amazon's cloud actually houses Netflix's streaming..that would be something to throw a wrench in any company that would consider buying Netflix especially as Netflix spent 7 years migrating from their old data centers to Amazon's Web Services. I have no idea if there was some sort of agreement made between Amazon (which owns over 40 subsidaries itself) and Netflix as far as housing their streaming services but still adds another company to deal with as far as purchasing it.

Ugh - I'm so bummed about this! We renewed our cable subscription fairly recently so we are locked in for quite some time and we enjoy having these movies go to StArz! We have Amazon Prime and with XFinity On Demand and Prime, we don't spend on Netflix. I don't think this will convert us to joining Netflix or abandoning cable, but disappointing none the less!
