I was just looking at my Netflix queue and it is kind of blah. I feel like there have been some great movies that I have probably missed...what are your suggestions? Seen any good ones lately?

We just saw Hollywoodland (liked it); The Namesake (it was pretty good); The Good Shepherd (liked it); Little Children (okay, kind of weird)

What's in your queue?!

When I can't think of any new movies to rent, I try and think of older movies or tv shows that I haven't seen in a while and rent those.

I think Netflix is perfect for tv shows. Buying the box sets gets expensive, and how often do you really watch them? This way you can sit down for a few weeks, catch up on your old favorite shows, but you're not spending anything extra and aren't stuck with a box set taking up space for 10 years until you decide you want to watch them again. Once you're done with the series, there are usually more movies I want to see again and I go back to that.

We just got "Once" from Netflix and really liked it. Also, look in the documentary section - we love their selection. We just watched God Grew Tired of Us and it was excellent.

We like the series TV shows too - try Entourage, Dexter and Curb Your Enthusiasm if you haven't already seen them.

"Into The Wild" comes out tomorrow. Not on my que as I'm buying it. Best movie I saw last year.

I have Michael Clayton and Gone Baby Gone from Netflix (plus something weird and anime for DH). I recommend both of them.

If that's your daughter under the sombrerro, I might recommend "Anne of Green Gables" a Canadian PBS mini series. Best movie i've seen in months of net flixing. (2 discs i think).

Only thing i've ever seen that matches it in quality was the Lonesome Dove miniseries (different audience though). My 9 y/o son fidgeted the first 10 min....but then he (& we all) couldn't wait to sit down & watch more of it. (i think it was 3+ hours).

I second that Anne of Green Gables series absolutely fantastic.

I recently saw Hairspray and loved it. If you like documentaries I just saw the Anne Frank that one the Oscar a couple of years ago. Absolutely riveting.

We do like documentaries...I will check the Anne Frank one out. My DD is only 5, will the Anne of Green Gables series keep her interested? She just watched The Princess Bride (great movie, if you've never seen it) and loved it. I will check it out.

Gone Baby Gone is on my list, as is Michael Clayton. I also have the British The Office ones on my list 'cause we love the American one.

I will check out Once, I had never heard of it until it won the Oscar for best song. Also Into the Wild.

Thanks, keep 'em coming!

Did you see Children of Men? I just watched Waitress and enjoyed it. Also liked Breach. Pan's Labyrinth was creepy but really good and it's on the on-line. I watched the Sea Inside with Javier Bardem on-line too.

My dd is six and she enjoyed Anne of Green Gables when the ran it on the local PBS station a few weeks ago.

Wow..........how weird is that? I absolutely hated, hated that movie! I was literally angry at the end because I was so disappointed. But I know it got several Oscar nominations so I guess this is really an example of different strokes for different folks. popcorn::

You know it was a true stroy, right? Really wasn't much more they could have done with the ending.

I thought it was beautifully filmed. The music and score were both perfect. I'm a 32 year old man and I cried when I saw it.

Dh and I like to rent Bollywood movies from Netflix. If you aren't used to them, Bride and Prejudice is a good "crossover" film - sort of American Bollywood.

We also get a lot of shows from PBS' Mystery series. I really like Brother Cadfael for historical mysteries and Inspector Lynley for modern.

I like to get musicals as well, and watch everything from the old Fred Astair/Ginger Rogers movies to the more recent releases like Hairspray, Chicago, etc. Dh isn't so fond of the musicals. He likes the song and dance routines in Bollywood movies, but doesn't like them in other movies. :confused3 Go figure!

Some of our other recent movies from Netflix:
Persuasion
The Queen
Jeeves and Wooster
Monsoon Wedding
The Importance of Being Earnest
A Room With a View
The Mission

"Stardust"

"Martian Child"

"3:10 to Yuma"

Boomhauer,
Don't want to totally hijack this thread so I'll just say that I agree with you about the music, cinematagraphy, etc. I think the 'mom' in me just kept hoping for a different ending. Funny how certain things affect us.

A couple of good documentaries we got from Netflix were My Brother's Keeper, and Capturing the Friedman's . Very emotional, family stories that make you think truth is stranger and more fascinating than fiction.
I love getting documentary recommendations because you don't hear about them much in the general media. Thanks!

If she enjoyed Princess Bride, then she should be ok with Anne. Probably better if she is "in school" & is aware of how kids interact in school. fwiw. (think "little house on the prairie" but far better done.)

Just remembered another one. "My Neighbor Tottoro" (i think). Amazing Disneyesque Japanese animation film (with english voices). Great story & a great film.

There are others in this "asian" children genre that are great as well (but some might be better for an 8-10 y/o. The age recommendations & reviews that i've seen on netflix appear to be spot on.

My kid (who admittedly is Korean, so he really LIKES the "pokeman" look of these films) has loved the 5-6 that we've received so far & we'll continue to rent them as they are great family films (really disneyesque) & often have good vrs. evil stories...which are good for kids to see growing up. (i know when i was growing up I didn't want to turn into a donkey or end up inside a whale...;))

I recommend one of my favorite movies of all time, "The American President" starring Michael Douglas and Annette Benning. It was written by Aaron Sorkin, who did the West Wing television show (which I believe was the result of the movie 'the american president') and "A Few Good Men."

We just watched 3:10 to Yuma, which was pretty good, and "War" if you feel like a mindless action flick.

I have to agree with "once." We watched it this weekend and it is just a great movie. We did have to watch with subtitles on though because their accents were thick and with our Southern Drawl it took a bit to figure out what they were saying. So subtitles was the way to go for us.
