They've had to recall their refrigerated cookie dough because some people got sick eating it raw. Well, duh! There's even a warning on the label noting not to eat it raw. And some people got sick & some were even hospitalized.

Nestle Recalls Toll House Cookie Dough Products
Posted: 7:06 am PDT June 19, 2009

SOLON, Ohio -- Nestle USA says its baking unit has voluntarily recalled Toll House refrigerated cookie dough products after a number or illnesses were reported by those who ate the dough raw.

The company said the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control are investigating reported E. coli illnesses that might be related to the ingestion of raw cookie dough.

The company says consumers should not eat raw cookie dough and that such a warning is featured on its packaging.

The recall includes refrigerated cookie bar dough, cookie dough tub, cookie dough tubes, limited edition cookie dough items, seasonal cookie dough and Ultimates cookie bar dough. It does not affect any other Toll House products.

I have ate lots and lots of cookie dough in my time and never got sick. I guess I'm really lucky

What about Pillusbury? How is it that Tollhouse can make you sick and they do not have a problem with all the others such as 800lb Gorilla? I would think it is the raw egg that causes the sickenss...then again if you eat a whole tub of cookie dough you will get sick not matter what. I too have eaten tons of raw dough in many forms including licking beaters and have never gotten sick.

:rotfl:

Ohmygod. I got a craving for cookie dough the last few weeks of my pregnancy and DH refused to make me any (w/o the eggs) and bought me Tollhouse in the tub instead.

I ate some... and got soooooooo sick the next day. It's the only thing we could figure out, that dang cookie dough!

I don't care what it says on the label, packaged food should not be contaminated with E. coli. They have recalled food for WAY less.

I got a call from Costco about this today -- I bought a tub of Nestle cookie dough about a month ago. We were going to make cookies with it this weekend. not anymore. LOL ...

Wait was it contaminated with e coli? I did not know the reason other than it was said that it could make you sick. I would think salmonella not e coli becaue that would come with fecal material....I just do not know how fecal materal could get in cookie dough. I understand meat but not cookie dough.

And that would be the problem with manufactured stuff like that...the wonder of where on earth the e coli came from.

That said, in a factory chicken farming type of operation, it's easy to get poop on eggs...stacks and stacks of open cages, the chickens on top pooping down on the chickens below...etc etc.

I'll eat all the raw cookie dough I want, made at home with eggs I crack myself...but I don't touch the manufactured stuff!

Yup. I would guess that improperly processed eggs are the culprit.

The article the O.P. used in her post specifically references e. coli.

Any lot numbers?? We had two packages of the ones that are little squares that have to be broken off...of course only 8 squares are left and we do bake them! No sickness here.

good thing I was lazy today and decided to sit my butt at the computer...I have a new tub of cookie dough in the fridge from Costco that I was going to make once I finished playing at the computer!!!
Is there certain lot numbers involved??

Nestle recalls Toll House cookie dough

AP, NEW YORK -- Food maker Nestle USA on Friday voluntarily recalled its Toll House refrigerated cookie dough products after a number of illnesses were reported by those who ate the dough raw.

The company said the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control are investigating reported E. coli illnesses that might be related to the ingestion of raw cookie dough.

In a statement, the FDA said there have been 66 reports of illness across 28 states since March. About 25 people have been hospitalized, but no one has died.

The FDA advised consumers to throw away any prepackaged, refrigerated Nestle Toll House cookie dough products in their homes. Retailers, restauranteurs and employees at other food-service operations should also not sell or serve any of the products.

Nestle spokeswoman Roz O'Hearn said "this has been a very quickly moving situation," adding the company took action less than 24 hours after hearing of the problem.

O'Hearn said the company will "cooperate fully" with the FDA's investigation.

The recall includes refrigerated cookie bar dough, cookie dough tub, cookie dough tubes, limited edition cookie dough items, seasonal cookie dough and Ultimates cookie bar dough. It does not affect any other Toll House products.

E. coli is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration and, in the most severe cases, kidney failure.

Yep, Costco called. Ironically I had just eaten a few spoons of the dough for lunch. I'm not too worried. If I disappear though, remember the cookie dough!

I have a tub of it I've been working on for a week- they can pry it out of my cold dead hands....
